Sanchi is famous for outstanding specimen of Buddhist art and architecture, belonging to the period between the third century BC and the twelfth century AD. The most important of all the Sanchi monuments is the Sanchi Stupa. Stupas are large hemispherical domes, containing a central chamber, in which the relics of the Buddha were placed. The Sanchi Stupa is one of the best preserved early stupas in central India. The Sanchi Stupa is surrounded by a railing with four carved gateways facing all the four directions.
During the Shunga period the Sanchi Stupa was enlarged and faced with stones and decorated with railings, staircase and a harmika on the top. Around the main Stupa, there is a path for circumambulation. This path is enclosed by a railing with gates at each of the four directions. The railings and gates of the Sanchi Stupa are richly sculptured with different motifs and designs. Another interesting characteristic about the Sanchi Stupa is that Lord Buddha has been symbolically represented by footprints, wheels, thrones etc rather than by his own image. The gateways of Sanchi stupas contain ornamented depiction of incidents from the life of the Buddha and his previous incarnations as Bodhisattvas described in the Jataka tales. The Buddha has been shown symbolically in the form of tree or through other inanimate figures.
The Stupa at Sanchi is one the most wonderful structures of ancient India. It has been included by the UNESCO as one of the heritage sites of the world. The Sanchi Stupa is a fine example of the development of the Buddhist architecture and sculpture beginning from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D. The site of Sanchi was discovered in the year 1818 by General Taylor and an archaeological museum was established in 1919y Sir John Marshall.
Bhopal is the nearest airport, while Vidisha is the nearest rail head. Bhopal to Sanchi is 46 km by road. Sanchi is situated around 46 km from Bhopal and is easily accessible by the available means of transport.

Indian Wedding Parade /Sanchi
Baraat (Hindi: बरात) (Urdu: برات) is a groom's wedding procession in North India, West India and Pakistan. In North Indian communities, it is customary for the bridegroom to travel to the wedding venue (often the bride's house) on a mare, accompanied by his family members.
The baraat can become a large procession, with its own band, dancers, and budget. The groom and his horse are covered in finery and do not usually take part in the dancing and singing; that is left to the baraatis or people accompanying the procession. The groom usually carries a sword. The term baraati is also more generically used to describe any invitee from the groom's side. Traditionally, baraatis are attended to as guests of the bride's family.
The baraat, headed by a display of fireworks and accompanied by the rhythm of the dhol, reaches the meeting point, where the elders of both the families meet. In North Indian Hindu weddings, the groom is greeted with garlands and aarti. In traditional North Indian weddings, baraats are welcomed at the wedding venue with the sound of shehnais, which are considered auspicious at weddings by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs alike.
Splendours of Mughal Architecture
Mughals were last amongst the most influential empires not only in the Indian Subcontinent, but also in the entire world before the industrial revolution and the subsequent British colonisation. Mughals, like all other Muslim dynasties had their origin in Central-West Asia, yet they were the only one to chose the Indian soil not only to rule but to also to establish their homes.
Mughals were master builders. They brought in formal Islamic domes, arches and calligraphy from their homeland, which they combined with existing architectural traditions of Hindu-Rajput, Gujarat, Malwa and Bengal. These fusions produced some of the breathtaking monuments of splendid art and architecture that India had ever seen.
The Humayun Tomb in Delhi is one of the earliest examples of grand Mughal architecture. Set in the middle of a sprawling charbhag garden, the tomb is a world heritage site and dominates the skyline of Delhi for miles around.
The next group of monuments are seen at Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. The tomb of Akbar at Sikandra, a suburb in Agra reflects Akbar's idea of tolerance and acceptance. It is built like a Rajput Palace. The Agra Fort has a number of buildings spanning 150 years of Mughal rule under Akbar, Jehangir and Shahjahan.
However, the ultimate creation of the Mughals is Taj Mahal, the signature monument of India. Built by Shahjahan for his beloved departed wife Mumtaj Mahal, Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world. Its timeless beauty is unparalleled in the history of Islamic art.

Sanchi Panels – An Art Studio driven by Common People
In the middle of 3rd century BC, India had gone through a traumatic event, the Kalinga War, but its consequence had far positive reaching. The Kalinga War transformed Ashoka from being a cruel king to a man of compassion, and an ardent follower of Buddhism. Till then Buddhism had spread its wings to the whole of Gangetic Basin, but without much imperial patronage.
Ashoka’s adoption of Buddhism opened up new possibilities. Buddhism got spread far beyond Gangetic Basin to Afghanistan in the west and Sri Lanka in the southeast. In succeeding centuries under the Sunga and Satavahana rulers, Buddhism became a religion of mass and it was a common sight seeing people travelling to pilgrimage sites associated with the life of the Buddha and contributing immensely for the construction of monasteries and stupas. New ideas were filtering through interactions between merchants and pilgrims from Indian subcontinent and the silk routes.
At the beginning sprawling Buddhist monasteries and stupas evolved at prominent sites, such as Sarnath and Bodhgaya, but in course of time several new centres evolved on trade routes and near important urban centres. One of these was Sanchi, a pristine hill near the ancient city of Vidisha. Sanchi had evolved as a centre of pilgrimage mostly due to Ashoka’s patronage and also due to its strategic location.
The monasteries of sanchi have lavishly carved stone railings surrounding stupas. These railings were provided by merchants, artisans, farmers and their family members who came to the site on pilgrimage. The railings were collectively patronized, with each relief provided by a different pilgrim. Writing was important to the merchants since they had to maintain inventories. Most of these people had got attracted to Buddhism mainly due to the religion’s liberal attitude to trade and moneylending and emphasis on equality. These people had relatively low status in the caste hierarchy.
Not only railings, but also gateways with depictions of narratives had been erected by the pilgrims. Events from the life of the Buddha were profusely illustrated in narrative reliefs that are generally confined to single rectangular panels in the gates or toranas and covering an entire crossbar.
Artistically speaking, the reliefs are fully modelled revealing rich shadows and lighting. They boast also the everyday life in Ancient India, from farming to trading and picnicking to celebrating festivals. Women constituted a third of donors to Sanchi’s railings and gateways.
A significant feature of these panels is that the Buddha is not shown in human form in any of the reliefs. Instead, he is symbolically shown through objects such as thrones, trees, wheels and footprints. It is debated among scholars why the Buddha is not represented in human form in early Buddhist art of the Subcontinent. Perhaps it was believed that Buddha as human was thought to lessen his achievement of enlightenment when he transcended mortal concerns after 549 incarnations. His unseen presence may have been deemed more potent than the guise of an ephemeral human being.

SUMMARY
=======
Sanchi Stupa, also written Sanci, is a Buddhist complex, famous for its Great Stupa, on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Raisen District of the State of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located in 46 kilometres (29 mi) north-east of Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structures in India, and an important monument of Indian Architecture. It was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. The original construction work of this stupa was overseen by Ashoka, whose wife Devi was the daughter of a merchant of nearby Vidisha. Sanchi was also her birthplace as well as the venue of her and Ashoka's wedding. In the 1st century BCE, four elaborately carved toranas (ornamental gateways) and a balustrade encircling the entire structure were added. The Sanchi Stupa built during Mauryan period was made of bricks. The composite flourished until the 11th century.
Sanchi is the center of a region with a number of stupas, all within a few miles of Sanchi, including Satdhara (9 km to the W of Sanchi, 40 stupas, the Relics of Sariputra and Mahamoggallana, now enshrined in the new Vihara, were unearthed there), Bhojpur (also called Morel Khurd, a fortified hilltop with 60 stupas) and Andher (respectively 11 km and 17 km SE of Sanchi), as well as Sonari (10 km SW of Sanchi). Further south, about 100 km away, is Saru Maru. Bharhut is 300 km to the northeast.

Women security personnel at the open Indo-Bhutan border
In this special report, we investigate the duties and the responsibilities of the women personnel of the SSB at Indo-Bhutan border. At Darrang, located at the border between India and Bhutan people do not have any inhibitions of walking across the border to meet friends, buy vegetables and other items.
