Punakaiki, West Coast
A travel and tourism guide to Punakaiki aimed at people taking roadtrip holidays around New Zealand. The focus is mainly on providing information for visitors who are self-driving visitors touring around in both cars and camper vans. We look at the camping grounds, accommodation, cafes, scenery and walks in the area. In particular we talk about the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, the Punakaiki Tavern, the Punakaiki Beach Camp Ground and the walk up the Porarari River to the swing bridge.
If you’re interesting in getting more detail about walks around Punakaiki you could have a look at these links:

Our goal at roadtripnewzealand is to provide the best content on the web for people who are looking for New Zealand’s choicest little places. We don’t focus on places you hear about all the time like Queenstown, Auckland, Rotorua and Milford Sound, we’re more interested in the special little places that make us glad we live in New Zealand. It’s our personal view of our country, what we like and what we love and we hope to give visitors the inside running on the best places to see and the best things to do.

New Zealand Glaciers
Traveling New Zealand: Welcome to Glacier Country! Situated on New Zealand's west coast, this region features two glaciers, Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. Both have hiking trails which allow you to get up close to the glaciers.
If you want to climb the glacier itself, you can only do so on a guided tour, ice climbing equipment is provided by the tour company. Another way to experience amazing views is by helicopter, they'll fly you over the glacier and do snow landings as well. Helicopter tours are expensive but well worth it on a clear day.
Fox Glacier was the most interesting, you're able to get closer to the ice, the glacier views through the rainforest are gorgeous and hiking through the rainforest is an awesome experience on it's own. Franz Josef Glacier has some fantastic waterfalls along the hike, though it's a longer trek along the rocks.
We traveled north along the coast from Glacier Country to Hokitika. About 30 km inland from Hokitika is Hokitika Gorge. An easy 10-15 minute walk through the rainforest will bring you to a suspension bridge and a stunning river of creamy turquoise-blue water. Visiting this gorge is definitely worth the drive!
After Hokitika, we traveled to Greymouth. North of Greymouth are the Pancake Rocks & Blow Holes walk path, overlooking the Tasman Sea. If you're passing through the area, take a driving break and enjoy a leisure walk, don't forget your camera. There's also a cafe and visitor center nearby.

Christine
Kayaking with AMAZING views - Paparoa National Park, New Zealand
Am I really in New Zealand right now? I found myself asking that question throughout the whole day that I explored Paparoa National Park in New Zealand's South Island, but especially during my kayak adventure. It felt like I teleported to an African jungle, or a Hawaiian island, or a different planet altogether. It was pretty close to an out-of-body experience.
I stumbled upon this gem while I was hitchhiking down the west coast and the guy who picked me up drove right past it. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how beautiful it was, lightly covered in haze during golden hour. So I HAD to delay my plans and spend the next day exploring this beautiful place.
It is right next to the ocean and the town of Punakaiki. Not only does it have incredible limestone gorges, it has the Pancake Rocks with a natural blowhole, caves, animal watching, and short or multi-day treks. After I hiked around, I waited until golden hour to take a kayak up the gorge. The views were incredible. I definitely recommend Paparoa National Park to those traveling in New Zealand.
If you'd like to kayak in Paparoa yourself, check out Punakaiki Canoes (not sponsored):

Pike River 1990's with Tony Kokshoorn, Coast Action Network.
Coast Action Network was a big part of the West Coast community. During the 90's they had a regular slot on Greymouth's Scenicland TV. Tony Kokshoorn talks about Pike River in the very early stages of development. This is part of the archived footage from Scenicland TV. Tony went on to become Mayor of Greymouth and still represents the district. Pike River ended in disaster killing 29 miners who still remain underground today.
