SUMMARY
=======
Elizabeth City (or Elizabeth Cittie as it was then called) was one of four incorporations established in the Virginia Colony in 1619 by the proprietor, the Virginia Company of London, acting in accordance with instructions issued by Sir George Yeardley, Governor.The plantations and developments were divided into four political divisions, called incorporations, burroughs, or cities. These were James City, Charles City, Henrico City, and Kiccowtan or Kecoughtan (later Elizabeth City). Each of the four citties (sic) extended across the James River, the main conduit of transportation of the era.
In 1634, under the authority of Charles I of England, Virginia was divided into eight counties, or shires. One of them was Elizabeth City Shire, later Elizabeth City County. Elizabeth City County existed until 1952, when it was incorporated as the independent city of Hampton, Virginia.
[Wikipedia] Virginia, Liberia
Virginia is a western suburb of Monrovia, located near the Atlantic Ocean on the northern side of the Saint Paul River in Liberia. It was the birthplace of Angie Brooks, the first African female president of the United Nations General Assembly.
A settlement originally called New Virginia, the American Colonization Society used it as a location for African-American immigrants from the United States. It gets its name from the U.S. state of Virginia, where most of the town's settlers originated before emigration to Liberia.
Virginia was also the location of the Organisation of African Unity conference hosted by President William R. Tolbert, Jr. - who was the group's chair at the time - at Hotel Africa in 1979, just months before he was overthrown by Samuel Doe.
During the Second Liberian Civil War, rebels used Virginia to launch an onslaught on Monrovia in 2003.
A South African consortium plans to invest US$100 million to renovate the historic hotel in time for Liberia's hosting duties of an international women's colloquium in 2009. It contains the Seaview Golf Club.

Take a historical journey through the Capital Region of the USA
Watch travel presenter Ashley House as he goes on a historical and cultural tour of Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia…
All eyes will be on the USA for the presidential elections in November as the country potentially makes history by electing its first female President. But it’s no secret that the country is steeped in a rich and exciting history, since the first colony was founded in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.
Follow Ashley House as he pinpoints some of the most historical sites in the USA shining the spotlight on Virginia, along with its neighbours, Washington DC and Maryland.
From Annapolis Maryland, nicknamed “a museum without walls”, to Washington DC, home of the President and the White House, a journey around the region is a real life history lesson. Take a visit to the same hotel that welcomed guests like Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, or take in the history of the Lincoln Memorial and Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.
No historical tour of America would be complete without a visit to the home of one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Jefferson. Situated in Virginia and built when Jefferson was just 26, this plantation also happens to be his resting place- a site well worth seeing.
For all this and more on why you should put the Capital Region on your bucket list, watch our video
