SARExHFX 2018
Check out this footage from last Novembers #SAR exercise (#SARExHFX) in Halifax Harbour. Municipal, provincial, and federal volunteer and career SAR agencies responded to this simulated incident to locate 20 people lost on a capsized tour boat.
Full scale multi-agency exercises such as #SARExHFX are critical to #SARPartner's. Learning from the scenario allows incident preplans to be reviewed and improved. It also fosters inter-agency cooperation and capability awareness of all responding agencies.
Scenario exercise operations were initiated and coordinated through a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Controller. JRCC Halifax leads and directs all aeronautical and marine based SAR operations in their 4.7 million square kilometers coverage area.
The Province of Nova Scotia Public Safety and Field Communication team participated in the exercise. Their participation allowed responders to communicate directly through a communication link established in their vehicle.
The Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander (SWA) was the first vessel on scene. The SWA had the responsibility for the on-scene coordination of marine SAR assets and the overall marine based search. The SWA also deployed its fast rescue craft (FRC.) The Coast Guard Cutter Sambro responded from its homeport of Sambro, NS.
Members of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary played a substantial role in the exercise. The St. Margaret's bay based Angel 6 and the Indian Point Fire Service Rescue 1 both participated. They conducted marine based searches under the direction of the SWA and played a significant role in the transport of #GSAR teams to their taskings.
The incident command post was established at the Centre for Ocean Ventures & Entrepreneurship - COVE, which is a former Coast Guard base in Dartmouth, NS.
Halifax Regional Police were tasked by JRCC to coordinate the ground searches of McNab's and Lawlor's Islands. The Halifax Police boat Garrett Cotter transported Halifax Search and Rescue (#HSAR) members to the islands. The Cotter also brought rescued subjects back to the staging area.
HSAR members were responsible for searching McNabs and Lawlor Island for missing subjects. As subjects were located, teams were required to provide first aid care and initiate the process to transport subjects off of the island. Two significant weather fronts that passed through Halifax on the day of the scenario provided additional challenges to the ground and marine taskings in the field.
This video is a reflection of the coordination & partnerships required for an effective crisis response. #SARPartners. #SARexHFX

Canadian Coast Guard ~ Gull Rock Lighthouse
Coast Guard helicopter leaving Gull Rock Lighthouse at Lockeport Nova Scotia. Spring 2011. This was filmed at 4 km. away so the zoom made things a little shakey. The cargo was droped off at West Head and back to Gull Rock Light for the crew.
Campervan 9 Day Lighthouse Roadtrip along the Washington Oregon California Coasts
A private club of 20 PleasureWay Class B Campervans toured the lighthouses along Washington, Oregon, and Northern California coasts. See where they stayed each night and the highlights of each lighthouse, a little-known heritage.
The group of 20 Class B motorhomes stayed at the following RV Parks and State Campgrounds:
Fidalgo Bay RV Resort, Anacortes, WA
Gig Harbor RV Resort, Gig Harbor, Wa
American Sunset RV Resort, Westport, WA
Fort Stevens State Park Campground, Hammond, OR
Premier RV Resort, Lincoln City, OR
William M. Tugman State Park, Lakeside, OR
Humbug Mountain State Park, Port Orford, OR
Emerald Forest RV Resort, Trinidad, CA
I stayed my last night at the Shelter Cove RV Resort in Shelter Cove, CA. I do not recommend taking a trailer or large motorhome down the Shelter Cove Road. It is too steep and curvy.
Baccaro Point Beach and Lighthouse
Baccaro Point Beach and Lighthouse in Shelburne County, in southwestern Nova Scotia, is where a radar station and lighthouse are located, This peninsula is the most southerly point of mainland Nova Scotia and is subject to strong currents and rough wave action. There are picnic tables and it is almost always completely deserted. Every bit as good as Peggy's Cove with spectacular waves crashing on enormous rocks, with amazing photo ops available every second. Sit and listen to the waves and sea gulls and get as close as you dare to the power of nature and the ocean, all this while you have a picnic and try and keep up with the too good to be true, amazing photos and videos. Not to be missed if coming to Southwest Nova Scotia.
Peggys Cove waves hitting the large rocks on the beach
Our vacation to Nova Scotia in April 2007 brought us to Peggys Cove. We watched the waves crash against the rocks for a couple minutes. It was very windy and cold that day so we stayed only a short time. You can also see the light house and the restaurant.
