Many people choose Westport as their home for its easy commute, excellent schools and plentiful leisure and cultural activities. Sophisticated and picturesque it has a fabulous downtown area with great shops, art galleries and restaurants. Its sandy beaches, scenic shorelines and inland woods impress at every turn. Waterfront properties grace the coastline while magnificent estates, country houses and contemporaries can be found throughout the area. With is breathtaking landscape, abundant amenities and convenient commutes to metropolitan centers, Westport attracts families, executives and people from the creative arts. Westport's Compo Beach was the site of the British invasion of Danbury known as Trion's Raid on April 25, 1777. Not far from Compo Beach stands the Minuteman Statue. The statue was built facing away from the beach because it commemorates the way the minutemen hid and waited until they could attack the large British army from behind. Compo Beach is the gem of Westport and the largest town beach with a boardwalk, pavilion, picnic area, playground, Skate Park and a host of sports fields. Other Westport beaches include Old Mill, Burying Hill, offshore Cockenoe Island and the 300 acre Sherwood Island State Park. Longshore Club Park is an 18 hole golf course with well-manicured fairways. The course is operated by the Town of Westport and open to Westport residents and their guests. There are three swimming pools at Longshore, a marina, yacht basin, a skating rink and tennis courts. Longshore is also the home of The Longshore Sailing School, one of the oldest and most renowned sailing programs in the country. In addition, Westport has two private clubs, Birchwood Country Club and The Hunt Club. Commuter services include shuttles to and from Saugatuck and Greens Farms rails stations for Westport residents as well as easy access to Interstate 95 and The Merritt Parkway. -- About this video --
Wahoo! We made to day 100 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year! Only 265 days to go! What better way to celebrate than mountain biking in Reefton?
How did we get to mountain biking in Reefton? Well the journey here was thanks to a bunch of friendly locals who are super keen to show us what their small town on the West Coast of the South Island is famous for. We go on a walking tour of Reefton with our hostel host from the Old Breadshop Backpackers, who introduces to a bunch of locals around town.
One thing leads to another and we are having drinks at the Broadway Tearooms having a conversation with a guy who wants to show us one of the mountain biking trails in Reefton. We are in!
Reefton boasts one of the best places for mountain biking in New Zealand with a huge range of trails close to the town. After picking up some bikes from the Reefton Sports Centre, we hit the Lookout Track.
We make our way up this hill at the back of Reefton to a lookout and then do some downhill mountain biking on the Zigzag Track in Reefton.
We downhill mountain bike all the way back to Reefton while crossing the Reefton swing bridge. Once we get back to our hostel, we are invited to go to a quiz night at the local pub.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Reefton? And have you had any friendly New Zealand locals experiences? Let us know in the comments.

Mountain Biking in Picton - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 82: Today we mountain biking in Picton by doing the Link Pathway. Join us on today’s New Zealand travel vlog as we do some mountain biking in Marlborough!

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today’s activity out of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand is mountain biking in Picton. The Picton mountain biking trail we are doing today is the Link Pathway between Picton and Havelock.
The Link Pathway in Picton is a great alternative to the Queen Charlotte Track. We hire some bikes from Wilderness Guides on Picton waterfront then bike straight to the start of the Link Pathway Track up the Queen Drive.
There are loads of options for mountain biking in Picton but the Link Pathway is a full one day track or half day if you return halfway along the Link Pathway track. The gradient is relatively steady on the Link Pathway in Picton so it’s even good for beginners like us.
The Link Pathway in Marlborough has some awesome views of the Marlborough Sounds, making another reason as a good alternative to the Queen Charlotte Track. By trailing through native forest and having epic views of the Queen Charlotte Sound along the way, the Link Pathway is one of the best places for mountain biking in Marlborough.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Picton? Is the Link Pathway in Marlborough something you would add to your New Zealand bucket list?

Monteith’s Brewery Tour, Greymouth - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 111: Today we are hitting one of the hop-tastic New Zealand brewery tours, the Monteith’s Brewery Tour in Greymouth. See what it’s like for yourself in today’s New Zealand vlog.
Yesterday - Day 110 ➜
Tomorrow – Day 112 ➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are in Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island! First activity on our list is to visit the Monteith’s Brewery for a taste of a New Zealand Brewery Tour!
The Monteith’s Brewery is right in the centre of Greymouth so we can easily walk there from our hostel. Once there we put on some hi-vis jackets and tour begins in this New Zealand working brewery.
We first learn about the history of the Monteith’s Brewery and the ingredients that go in a classic beer. It’s a hands-on brewery tour with ingredients to smell and even taste. Then it’s time to go into the working brewery itself.
Here we learn about the beer-making process as we stand in the middle of giant fermentation tanks with the aid of flow charts and a video. After the beer-making process, it’s the bottling and putting beer into kegs.
At the end of the brewery tour, we get to pour our own beer for a tasting. At the bar we can also choose to purchase tasters and food, which we do exactly that!
So what do you think of the Monteith’s Brewery Tour in Greymouth? Is it something to add to your New Zealand bucket list? Let us know in the comments!
