Land of the Pines: Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve
The Sandhills of North Carolina are known primarily for PGA golf, military bases, potteries, and farms. But there is also a great nature preserve just outside of Southern Pines in Moore County, North Carolina. This is the Wymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve. This preserve protects and manages a Long Leaf Pine forest typical of the Sandhills region. In this video, I explored the main preserve property as well as the Boyd Tract, a separate property nearby that is also part of the Preserve. Some of the trees in the preserve are 450+ years old, including one tree that is believed to be the oldest known Long Leaf Pine. The terrain in the area is gently rolling hills and long flat valleys, making for very easy and enjoyable strolls along the various hiking and equestrian trails found criss-crossing the preserve. Thanks for watching!!!

Oldest longleaf pines in the world - Boyd Tract - Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, NC
A short hike on December 22, 2018 in the Boyd Tract of Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, NC. This small park unit is located in the middle of historic Southern Pines surrounded by homes and horse farms. The smallest of the three tracts in the state preserve protects the oldest living longleaf pine trees in the world. The only hiking trail is the Round Timber Trail, but this park is crisscrossed by many horse trails. The Boyd Tract is small so even if you get lost you won't go far until you hit a road.
Beginning at the stately Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities I accidentally zoomed right by the 2nd oldest longleaf pine and began searching for the oldest off-trail. Even though the general locations are denoted on the free map, neither tree is marked and it turns out super old longleaf pines don't look much different from very old longleaf pines. Eventually I ran into a hiker who knew the location and showed me the oldest longleaf pine. It was beat up, years of fires and storms have taken the top and many branches. But you can tell it was old, ~470 years old in fact. The bark looked scarred and the highest limbs were thicker than any limbs on neighboring trees. The 2nd oldest longleaf pine I could easily spot when I looped around and knew what I was looking for. It was a far more impressive tree. Huge trunk, diameter around 3.5 feet, and had a much more impressive canopy of limbs.
Hike was 2.6 miles with 260 feet elevation gain in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Weymouth Woods NC FPV flyaround
I recently was sent to Southern Pines, NC by my employer and while there came across Weymouth Woods State Park. This is part of the NC State Park System. What a beautiful place. I walked back into the wood this past Monday evening and was completely alone for over an hour. What a great place! Lots of nature and the pines are unbelievable. Can't say that for my flying! It looks like there are wide open spaces between those trees but they get really close when you get up on them. Now I wish I had flown above the trees but they absorb the prop noise so well it was easy to loose track of where you are and they all look the same.

Pinus strobus is found in the nearctic temperate broadleaf and mixed forests biome of eastern North America. It prefers well-drained or sandy soils and humid climates, but can also grow in boggy areas and rocky highlands. In mixed forests, this dominant tree towers over many others, including some of the large broadleaf hardwoods. It provides food and shelter for numerous forest birds, such as the red crossbill, and small mammals such as squirrels.
Eastern white pine forests originally covered much of north-central and north-eastern North America. Only one percent of the old-growth forests remain after the extensive logging operations of the 18th century to early 20th century.
Old growth forests, or virgin stands, are protected in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Other protected areas with known virgin forests, as confirmed by the Eastern Native Tree Society, include Algonquin Provincial Park, Quetico Provincial Park, and Algoma Highlands in Ontario, Canada; Estivant Pines, Huron Mountains, Porcupine Mountains State Park, and Sylvania Wilderness Area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States; Hartwick Pines State Park in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan; Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin; Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota; White Pines State Park, Illinois; Cook Forest State Park, Hearts Content Scenic Area, and Anders Run Natural Area in Pennsylvania; and the Linville Gorge Wilderness in North Carolina, United States.

Sugar Loaf Mountain ~ Sand Hills State Forest ~ South Carolina
Hiking Sugar Loaf Mountain at Sand Hills State Forest in Chesterfield, SC.
The Sand Hills State Forest is an over 46,000 acre arid, sandy, pine barren located in Chesterfield and Darlington Counties, in northern South Carolina. These sandy hills are all that remain of an ancient inland sea. This unique ecosystem contains several rare plant and animal species, including Pixie Moss, the Red Cockaded Woodpecker, and the Pine Barrens Tree Frog. The forest offers a number of outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, camping, and equestrian use. Some activities require relevant permits and fees.
One of the most popular spots in the Sand Hills State Forest is the Sugar Loaf Recreation Area. This area has long been a gathering point for inhabitants of the area. Known locally simply as the mountain, Sugar Loaf Mountain is really just a hill, but it is unique in the area, towering over the prevailing terrain with very steep sides. The trail up the hill is short but steep and made almost entirely of stairs. It's a good workout walking to the top. At 456 feet above sea level, the summit of Sugar Loaf offers some decent views of the surrounding area. Another popular spot in the area is Horseshoe Mountain, another hill comprised of deep sand located just across the saddle from Sugar Loaf. Horseshoe Mountain has a distinct curved shape, thus the name. Although not as high as Sugar Loaf, Horseshoe also has steep slopes.
Come along and stop by scenic Mountain Pond, then climb both Sugar Loaf and Horseshoe Mountains. Thanks for watching!
