Whale watching is a must do when you go to Australia!
We hit the season just right and got a great deal on Whale One (this is the famous one that Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter owned).
It was incredible and the whales took my breath away. Kyle truly found his happy place on the water that day.
Humpback whale watching in Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Australia
I took a tour to watch humpback whales with my brother while visiting him in Sunshine Coast, Australia. He lives very close to Mooloolaba which is where the starting point of the tour. It is a 3-hour tour that ferried us from point to point in search of whales.
Although we caught one whale doing the head lunge (jumping out of the water), I did not capture it since I was not ready with my camera phone. We did spot quite a number of them blowing water and swimming in pairs or in a pod. So cool.

Whale Calf Encounter - Mooloolaba Queensland Australia
Short version: A sick whale makes it's way to the Sunshine Coast. We were on the Mooloolaba Spit to take photos of the sunset when it started to make it's way from the shore out to sea but then came over to the spit where the rocks were and where I was standing. It is rubbing itself on the rocks to 'itch' the parasites that are covering her body. There is quite a few pauses where not much happens so if you want to skip this might help:
0:47 is when he starts swimming out toward the sea, you can just see him in the centre of the screen.
2:00 he seems to stop where he is and rest. You will see water in the air every now and then.
9:11 I walk up the pier a little and then scan around the surroundings with the camera ( major wind noises sorry!) and then back to where the whale is out in front of me. Keep watching from here because it is then he slowly starts to come closer. We are standing at the top of the rocks literally metres away. Apologies for the sniffling noises later as I get a bit emotional.
Long version: This video is a series of short videos I made on my iPhone and have pieced together before my phone went completely flat. It is unedited complete with wind noises so be prepared. I wasn't expecting this experience so it's not a professional video in any way and yes I know I filmed most of it the 'wrong' way up.
At one point you will see I turned the camera around to show as much of his body as possible.
We got to the spit at around 4:30 pm as we intended sitting and waiting for the sunset and to take photos. We had heard that there was a sick calf whale that had made its way to the Sunshine Coast but were unaware it was in that area when we arrived. When we parked our car we noticed a group of people looking out to sea and that there was a couple of boats and kayaks around the small whale. It was quite close to shore and didn't seem to be moving at all which was concerning. I took a video ( which I have not put on here) of him from the shore line but as there was not much movement you couldn't really see him.
We decided to walk out to the end of the spit and sit and take photos and wait for the sunset which was due at about 5:08 pm. We were there for a while, there was only a few people coming and going. I was taking photos etc, I then stopped and a man came up and said 'he's coming this way, I just ran around here'. I looked out and started filming as he was starting to make his way out to sea.
If you look in the centre of the video you will see him as he starts to make her way to my direction. I walked a little up from the end of the spit as she started to come toward where I am standing to the rocks. Further on in the video he starts to thrash on the rocks as she is trying to scratch off the parasites covering her body ( the brown on her body is the parasites). He also has what appears to be some small shark bites on his body. In one part of the video when you hear voices it is because I have a lady next to me making notes and she is discussing the whale.
I filmed for a while but then my phone was down to 1% so turned it off. Turned it back on again for a short section to show the amount of people that had turned up ( not that many considering). Everyone was respectful and pretty quiet. We stayed until it got dark, he was still in the same spot when we left. In the end of the video just a quick show of the surrounding area.
UPDATE: Unfortunately it was revealed that he perished overnight. It is not known what the cause of death was. They removed some of his skin and blubber for testing before they towed him out to sea. It has been said it will take months to determine what might have caused him to be sick.
