Travelling from St. Petersburg to Sitka Cruising Alaska on an Alaskan Cruise
As the marine highway winds its way north , it stops
At many small towns along the way. For towns like wrangell,
The ferry is the main link with the outside world.
Locals use it for visits to other towns along the
Route and of course tourists and adventure seekers
Use the ferry to get to jumping off points such as this.
After the wrangell narrows, the bright
And beautiful town of petersburg beams a velkomen --
which means welcome in norwegian. And the people
of this town mean it!
The clear cold water and stately fjords on this extreme
Tip of mitdof island reminded peter buschmann so much
Of his native norway that he settled here.
Other scandanavians joined him and built petersburg --
An alaskan town with a distinctly european flavor.
as in other towns of the inside passage, the people of
Petersburg make their living from the forest and the sea.
the traditional norwegian art of rosemaling
Decorates buildings as it does in norway. Even the painted
Shutters here recall that other much loved place
On waters far away.
On days like this when the clouds part and the
Snow-bright mountains appear, petersburg is a
Place that's hard to leave.
But the marine highway goes on and another beautiful
city with a different history awaits.
Sitka rests at
the foot of spruce covered mountains and overlooks
The blue waters of the sound where a chain of small
wooded islands repeats the endlessly lovely theme
of forests meeting sea.
this desirable setting has made sitka one of history's
Prizes.
Sitka began as a tlingit indian village until the russian
alexander baranoff, the commander of a fur hunting
Party, built a fort here in 1799. The tlingit indians
Rebelled and in a surprise attack destroyed the fort.
baranoff retreated to return with warships and
Decisively defeated the tlinget. This plaque marks the
Site of the battle. Baranof then built a castle on this
Hill but only the cannon remains today.
Sitka soon became a flourishing town. It was here
that the russian flag was lowered in 1867 when the united
States bought all of alaska from russia for the then
Outrageous price of $7.2 million dollars. Sitka became
The capital of the new territory until the early 1900's
when it was moved to Juneau.
Timber, fishing, and government keep sitka thriving -
And tourism is growing. St. Michaels, with it's onion
Dome is one of the finest examples of rural russian architecture.
When this 150 year old church burned down in 1966,
The townspeople saved the doors and priceless icons
And rebuilt the church exactly.
This stately building is the first of five homes the
state of alaska has built for its older citizens. The old
pioneers home honors the original settlers of alaska and the
Statue of the old pioneer was modelled after skagway bill Fonda.
The sheldon jackson museum houses an
excellent collection of antique and modern indian artifacts
And totem poles. In its own way this native art is a forceful
and graphic history of the events that shaped the region.
Nearby, sheldon jackson college operates a salmon
Hatchery which visitors can observe from viewing platforms.
beyond the hatchery, the yacht harbor lies nestled
in a beautiful natural harbor....... One of the reasons
why sitka became the first capital of Alaska.
Humpback whales feeding in Frederick Sound, Alaska
It was a beautiful and flat calm day on one of our Alaska cruises. We stopped the David B and turned our engine off to listen to humpbacks as they surfaced from feeding. Since it was so calm we also dropped a hydrophone to listen to them underwater. Whales were spread out all over. Eventually these two surfaced near us.
Ketchikan, Alaska._ The Salmon Capitol of the World.
Ketchikan is known as Alaska's first city due to its location at the southern tip of the Inside Passage -- it is the first city you reach as you cruise north, and for many visitors, their first introduction to the beauty and majesty of Alaska
The downtown area is the main commercial district and contains two large harbors, several cruise ship docks, and many of Ketchikan's main attractions, including historic Creek Street, a boardwalk road built over Ketchikan Creek on pilings.
Founded as a salmon cannery site in 1885, Ketchikan's livelihood was initially fishing and for years the city was known as the Canned Salmon Capital of the World. Logging became an important industry as well, and when cruise ships started plying the waters of the Inside Passage, Ketchikan naturally became a popular port of call.
Offshore Christmas in the Atlantic
Made it in from some offshore sailing(?) and just woke up from a 14hr recovery/sleep... Winds were supposed to be 10-15 from the north with seas 1-3ft. They were not. Swells were walls of water surrounding us... High winds created 3ft white caps on TOP of the swells... It was like riding inside a boat sized roller coaster, thrust and dropped/rolled/spun into whatever direction the seas wanted us at that moment... small objects becoming projectiles/ammo... ... And that was before the black/thickly clouded night settled over top of us... (video to come once I get wifi)
Highlights include:
~A pod of 50+ dolphins surrounding/playing/jumping/taunting Finn/hanging out alongside Annabel as we surfed moving walls of ocean.
~Watching Christmas Vacation in the cockpit (the laptop and speaker were stuck beautifully to a frog pad) whilst previously described dolphin scenario was happening around us. My theory is that it's such a perfect Christmas movie that the entire pod wanted to watch it with us.
~We cleared an entire state in one single day. South Carolina...nope, never laid eyes on it.
~'Twas confirmed that Ms. Annabel (and the captain) are seriously badass/hardcore MFs that can handle rough seas with Grace and Certainty.
~Phosphorescents: After the black night threw her matte cloak over top of us, dolphins showed up again and painted glowing patterns of phosphorescents that swirled and splashed around/next to/onto Annabel. The only visible light was the line of glow from Annabel, and whatever fun fancy the pod of dolphins created for us to look at.
~Finnegan did not get sea sick. Amazingly, no one did!
~Cinnamon raisin bread/Grandma Gold on Christmas morning..followed by Christmas cookie rapture..AND actual presents to open up!!!!
There was an unmatched feeling of warm fullness and love that came from having such generosity from you, our friends and family... not once did we feel alone out there in those huge seas...instead, we glowed with love, connected by thought (and cookies), enough so that dozens of dolphins (and even a whale...did I mention that yet?) came to swim along side of us and feel the warmth of you all....
Whale Time
Gray whale visited Rhodena Beach on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, about two miles east of Coupeville, Washington, on 11 June 2010. It was very high tide and the sun was shining brightly. The whale was about 35 feet long, weighing about 30 tons. It worked up and down the beach for about two hours, putting on quite a show for the local residents. It lied on its side, digging up ghost shrimp with one flipper and holding the other flipper in the air. The next day, we saw large triangle-shaped pits in the sand dug by the whale. The whale takes in large amounts of water in its mouth and forces it out through its baleen. It then licks the shrimp off the baleen. There are only about 100-200 Pacific gray whales left, although there are several thousand Atlantic gray whales. There were also whales sighted the same day at Crescent Bay and Admiral's Cove on Whidbey Island. The whales visit the island every 3-5 years and are migrating north to Alaska. They are the longest migrating mammals, going from Baja California to the arctic.
A peaceful lagoon in Alaska
Stayed at a State Public Cabin 2 nights and enjoyed this quiet Ocean lagoon and all its wildlife; seals, otters, porpoises, and many shore birds. May it always be protected.
Cruising Alaska Aboard the Motor Vessel David B
This video describes a 7-day cruise in Alaska aboard Northwest Navigation Company's Motor Vessel David B. On this cruise we visited Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. On the way back from Dawes Glacier we ran across a pod of orca whales. We watched humpback whales in Frederick Sound and went for a forest walk on Admiralty Island. An Alaskan Haka - Sailing Alaska
Lynne presented likely the first traditional Maori Haka on the bow of the BOB. According to Wikipedia, haka were originally performed by warriors before a battle, proclaiming their strength and prowess in order to intimidate the opposition, but haka are also performed for various reasons: for welcoming distinguished guests, or to acknowledge great achievements, occasions or funerals, and kapa haka performance groups are very common in schools. We like to think Lynne was welcoming we distinguished guests, but we are always ready for battle, too.

The Charter Boat Ursa Major at Green Island, British Columbia - a Drone's Eye View
Captain Josh took this drone video while the Ursa Major was anchored at Green Island, British Columbia, on our southbound Inside Passage Trawler Training Trip from Petersburg, Alaska to Seattle, WA last month. The visbility during the afternoon was incredible, and we had quite the sunset from anchor that evening. Green Island is located inside Fitzhugh Sound, and is a great spot to stage for the crossing of Queen Charlotte Sound, and points south inside the protection of Vancouver Island.
Visit myursamajor.com for more information on Ursa Major Charters, and our Alaskan Adventure Trips and Inside Passage Trawler Training Trips. Our Alaska Adventure trips are multi-activity trips and include something for everyone. Trip activities include wildlife viewing, photography, kayaking, and hiking, and our trip itineraries are customized based on guest preference, and vary trip by trip. Our trips between Sitka and Peterburg take us along the eastern side of Baranof Island, also known as The Waterfall Coast due to the extensive amount of continuous falling water found there year-round. The glacially-carved fjords found along that coast are among of the most spectacular wildlife viewing and paddling spots in all of southeast Alaska.
Many thanks to Kern Hendricks, one of our guests of aboard the Ursa Major on this trip, who edited and added the beautiful music to Captain Josh’s drone video taken at Green Island.

Thomas Bay and Baird Glacier.wmv
57.0000° N, 132.7833° W
Thomas Bay is known for glaciers, gold, and quartz deposits, moose, brown bears, black bears, wolves and birds. Nicknamed both The Bay of Death, due to a massive landslide in 1750, and the Devils Country since 1900, when people claimed to have seen devil creatures in the area. It is also home to the Baird Glacier Trail which grants you access to stand atop the mile-wide Baird Glacier.
