Filming was carried out using the MV Holly Jo along the Cork coast, extending into Co. Waterford. It was a long way from our home port in West Cork, but these are the lengths we have to be prepared to go to in order to capture the best film footage.
This programme showcased the conservation research of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group iwdg.ie which includes both Photo- Identification studies and acoustic monitoring of the humpback and fin whales along the Irish South coast.

Humpback Whale Breaching, Dec 1st 2013, Sherkin Island, West Cork, Ireland.
On Sunday 1st December 2013 I was out with on a whale watching trip with Sherkin Sea Ventures, which was skippered by Charlie Green.
At 3.15pm we arrived at an area where we spotted one Humpback Whale and some Fin Whales, about 2 miles south of Sherkin Island, West Cork in Ireland, which isn't far from the village of Baltimore.
To the great surprise and delight of those on board our boat the whale performed two breaches. The first breach occurred at 3.28pm and the second occurred one minute later at 3.29pm. I was lucky to be able to capture the second breach on camera.
Behind the breaching whale is Sherkin Island.
I made this video from the sequence of photos I took of this rare event in Irish waters.
The breach itself only lasted 2 to 3 seconds but I've slowed the video down and repeated the breach for a better visual effect.
The Humpback Whale has been recorded as visiting Irish waters in the past, according to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group's Database, and has been catalogued as HBIRL 6.

Irish Whale and Dolphin Group Fin Whale Research trip in July of 2011 of the Cork Coast, Ireland.
Colin Barnes's Holly Jo was allowed to get much closer to the whales than normal as this was a research trip.
Conor (GMIT/IWDG) is seen shooting special darts with a cross-bow at surfacing 60+ ton Fin whales to get skin samples for analysis. Colin, the skipper, had to carefully bring the boat close enough. The operation was supervised by a park ranger from the NPWS.ie.

Watching Humpback whales bubble net feeding in West Cork - Baltimore Sea Safari
Video from a Baltimore Sea Safari whale watching boat trip off Baltimore in West Cork, Ireland - watching Humpback whales bubble net feeding on sprats. Humpback whales have developed an unusual technique for feeding on shoals of fish, they drop deep in the water and swim around in a circle blowing bubbles. the circle of bubbles rise slowly to the surface, trapping fish in the center of the bubbles (like a curtain of bubbles), then they rise through the center of the ring with their huge mouths open scooping up all the fish contained within the ring. They usually settle on the surface of the water for a few seconds to force the water out through their baleen plates, and to swallow the fish, before often repeating the process. This is an adult and a sub adult working together.
