Whale Watching Perth Western Australia
Whale Watching Perth Western Australia is an incredible place to Learn the Language of the Whales™ especially during Spring as we observe the southern migration with many mothers and calves resting just off Perth. Meeting a relaxed mother and her little one this morning we made a gentle approach and joined up with them as they cruised along and enjoyed a leisurely Saturday morning. Breakfast was delicious 48% fat milk for the calf and we noticed the sucking type behaviour with regular intervals from mum to the surface and back again. A peaceful morning that very suddenly changed when a local Bottlenose Dolphin began to approach the pod and captured the attention of the young calf. Launching into a full body breach the Humpback calf landed upside down, rostrum first and a very big splash followed. Displaying confidence towards the Bottlenose Dolphin and letting him know that this was her mum and milk bar.. do not come too close!
The Dolphin had started the conversation but the young calf now took the opportunity to continue breaching, head lunging, peduncle and tail slapping with one or two pectoral slaps thrown in as well and we were fortunate to sight an incredible variety of surface behaviours from the Language of the Whales™. Due to the extreme breaching we had the perfect view of her lower belly and could confirm that this was a female calf and she was very interested in us. Her eyes were wide open as she would breach or head lunge and look back at everyone watching her, seeming pleased with all of her new human friends. She then spied small tuffs of floating seaweed and it wasn't long before she was rolling around in the seaweed and scaring the tiny baitfish around her. Everything went quiet and we could see that the baitfish were becoming increasingly nervous and jumping around, surely she was up to something and it was then that she launched. Completely airborne and only meters away from alongside our vessel, Breeeach! and what a beauty it was. Whale Watching Perth Western Australia is a perfect place to meet our magnificent Humpback Whales and enjoy learning all about them.

Whale Watch Western Australia Season 2016
Summer is here and our wonderful whales are now enjoying a long awaited meal in the cool and nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. They will spend the next few months feeding and regaining their strength before they return once again along the West Australian coastline to complete another incredible migration. This season we have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of whales and each interaction created long lasting memories that will be treasured for a lifetime. It is hard to put into words the incredible affect these magnificent creatures have on everyone that meets them and the joy they bring to so many lives.
Although we will miss our friends until they return again, we feel very pleased in knowing that there are currently around 2-3,000 new Humpbacks calves experiencing their very first time in Antarctica and all whales who have returned are relishing a very well earned feed and replenishing those hungry tummies! The migration they undertake every year is an estimated 13,000 kilometre long journey that was made all the more challenging this season with a very long lasting winter and spring. Once again they made a successful journey back to the kitchen fridge and development grounds of their new calves and just as one journey ends the preparation for the next one begins.
This season was filled with many once in a lifetime moments, such as meeting Pearl the White Southern Right Whale Calf and little Leeuwi the Humpback calf born in Flinders Bay in late June who found a way to survive when all odds were against him. Curious Minke whales in Geographe Bay and even a family pod of Pygmy Blue Whales including her young calf were sightings we will treasure. We have compiled just a few of our favourite images and moments from this season that we hope you enjoy.
We would like to thank all of our guests and local communities for your support and also your love and admiration for your whales! Almost having lost our West Australian Whales many years ago it was the desire to protect these Dinosaurs of The Deep™ that has allowed them to regain strength in their populations and continue to bring joy to the lives of thousands of people each year. We are the fortunate ones who have the privilege of taking you to meet them and have the responsibility to teach every person who steps aboard Whale Watch Western Australia everything they have ever wanted to know about The Language of The Whales and for that we are forever grateful...see you next year!❤️????
Best Whale Watching in Western Australia
The best whale watching in Western Australia was in perfect demonstration today as Flinders Bay and her visiting Humpbacks showed us the sensational Language of the Whales™! The morning was busy as we began our first interaction within moments of departing the Augusta Boat Harbour with a very relaxed juvenile. Leaving him to continue his Sunday morning sleep in we approached a pod of three young adults who were being rather proactive in their chasing across the bay. A young male had approached the two and it didn't appear that they really wanted his company so tried to allow for some speed to make their new tail disappear. Approaching the abalone farm it seemed to work as a good distraction and it wasn't long before three became two once again and they all settled back into the migration movement. Large adults surged past and we smiled to see the alliance pod of male Bottlenose Dolphins back in the bay again and causing havoc with the Humpbacks.
Racing around them at full speed the six or so Humpbacks seemed slightly confused as to which way was best to go, should they follow the other Humpbacks or hang out with the dolphins? Some went left and a few went right as the Bottlenose Dolphins spent a bit of time with us zooming around the bow and stern. Some of the best whale watching in Western Australia can be found in Augusta during this time of year as the enormous male Humpbacks display in incredible fashion their strength and today we witnessed the perfect example. Two mature males launched into a full surface active display of breaching, head lunging and unified pec slapping with perfect timing. Continuing to breach towards our vessel we could sight a very unique marking on the pectoral fin of one individual that looked exactly like a lighting strike. Very cool indeed and it wasn't long before they had attracted the attention of another large individual and began to socialise together. Forming a bachelor pod they were now ready to find a lovely lady to impress.
Whale Watch WA & Dolphins defend Humpback Mother & Calf
For live audio version please see here➡️
Incredible sequence of events led us to be in a privileged position to get some incredible footage of how a Humpback Mother will defend her calf by all means necessary, including using our vessel as a protection barrier and the help of some heroic Dolphins.
There are some erroneous opinions that Humpback Whales will abandon their calves which this footage explains why they will fight to the death to protect their young. The males do not wish to harm the calf at any stage but do want to mate with the Mother and in the competition the calf can become separated which is fatal for the young calf.
The footage from Flinders Bay, Augusta today shows what we have experienced before but never as intense as the Mother brought her calf time and time again close into our vessel, even pushing herself and the calf slightly into our hull where the males could not go. For 40 minutes the Mother and calf kept very close to our vessel and as the intensity and focus diminished from the males until one left the area and the lone male then behaved himself enough to be welcomed as an escort for the Mother and Calf.
Incredibly there were two mother and calf Humpbacks being chased by five males this afternoon and we recognised both mother/calf pods as females we have sighted before in Flinders Bay including Sunny the calf and his mum Spirit. The females did not seem to want to leave each other even though one of them had the opportunity to swim away, she returned back to the side of the second mother and calf seeming to understand the desperation of the situation. After being chased for over thirty minutes by the males and growing increasingly desperate, Sunny and his mum moved over towards our vessel and did not leave. The second mother and calf pod then left the area quickly to avoid detection from the males as they spotted the opportunity to do so.
Spirit pushed Sunny so close to us his body rubbed up against our hull as she blocked the approach of the males and protected her calf from being crushed. We could hear the distress in her exhalation as she trumpeted towards the males in aggression and Sunny was doing everything he could to follow mums directions. He was so trusting towards us as his tiny body flopped off mums back every time she resurfaced, he was looking for that security by travelling on her back for protection. She continued to stay with us and by doing so the other males eventually dispersed except for one, who continued to follow her closely.
To everyones great surprise the bodyguards moved in as the local Bottlenose Dolphins raced towards the situation and surrounded mother and calf protectively. One of the dolphins was even sighted flashing their mouth wide and showing off his teeth towards the male Humpback! They could feel the energy between mother and calf who were slowly calming back down as the immediate danger of separation had settled slightly. The approach of a young male Humpback changed the mentality of the larger male in a good way as he now took ownership of mother and calf, defensively chasing the other male away and it was at this moment both Sunny and Spirit relaxed enough to now move away from our vessel. The large male now appeared to be acting as an escort for mother and calf and instead of chasing after them was now actively defending and chasing the younger male away.
Sighting this type of interaction is truly remarkable even in the natural nursery grounds further north in the Kimberly. To have the privilege of seeing this interaction in Flinders Bay, Augusta and being in a position to be accepted by the female Humpback to assist in saving her calf from immediate danger is something we will always treasure and a true once in a lifetime experience. Humpback Whales are one of the most remarkable whales in the world and today was a perfect example why, no situation is too great for these whales to find a way to adapt and succeed and we can all be inspired by that!

Whale Watch in Western Australia
Augusta was all sunshine today as we departed on a crystal clear morning to whale watch in Western Australia. A competition pod of three had begun in the middle of the bay and as we made our gentle approach the female took a big interest in us, swimming directly towards our vessel! The two males who had been following her also approached and she began to flirt with us by pectoral slapping and rolling to the side as she showed off her big white belly. They continued to spy hop and spin upside down with their entire fluke and peduncle muscle clear above the waters surface. Everything changed when a larger male approached quietly from behind us and made a sneaky approach.
All three whales began to move again with the female launching herself into the air as she breached to encourage the males to follow her and it seemed to be the larger male who won the competition as both moved off together. Our morning had another big surprise waiting for us as we watched a large Humpback approaching our vessel as we quietly waited and watched. A quick flash of grey and there he was, the tiny Humpback Calf who was sighted yesterday! Mum no longer had a male escort travelling with them and we watched in amazement as she gently brought her calf towards us to show off her baby. We were very excited to see that she recognised our vessel and moved straight towards us and gently underneath before continuing with their morning. A special moment to be so close to this newborn calf who we have already grown very fond of and all of our wonderful guests onboard today will be helping us to name this precious calf.

Orca Air - Whale Watch Western Australia
Orca Air touched down early this morning as our guests arrived and we welcomed our first Orca Flight Experience for Season 2019 for what was set to be an exciting day with the Orca. Arriving in the Bremer Canyon the Orca were sighting within moments and they were on the move, tracking east and on the hunt. A quick change of direction and all 30+ Orca changed direction and began porpoising towards the heart of the feeding grounds as we followed and watched their incredible power. The families then went on their seperate ways and we enjoyed the curious company of a big male known as Chalky and he is a real charmer! Rolling onto his back and approaching the bow he was staring directly up and towards our guests looking back at him. Throughout the morning Chalky and his family would move past our bow while interacting with our vessel and seemed to have full bellies, it was now time to socialise. A powerful male Orca is impressive at the best of times but when they swim directly at you and appear more along the lines of a torpedo as Chalky approached within centimetres of our vessel they are truely remarkable to be in the presence of! Another exciting and unique day out in the Canyon.
