Whale Watching in Mirissa Sri Lanka
The sea of Mirissa is the place where you can see whales and dolphins while travelling in Sri Lanka. Many sightings have been reported in November to April in the year.
Many pygmy blue whales can be seen at Dondra point in Sri Lanka. You can access it through the Mirissa Harbour or Weligama Harbour. Whale watching tours can be arranged via many in Sri Lanka.
Dolphin watching - Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka ( Indian Ocean) by Ayal Perera
Dolphin watching in Sri Lanka has always been a very exciting activity. The thrill that you get when you witness these beautiful creatures is always humbling. You can enjoy these expeditions mainly during the morning and afternoon, while the morning trip is considered the best to try it out.
Your clothing should always be comfortable. We suggest shorts, Shoes with rubber soles are advised while safety jackets and gear are provided by the expedition organizers. Sunscreen is suggested since you will be spending a good couple of hours out in the ocean. The boat ride would be at times choppy and for those who get sea sick should take precautions prior to boarding the boat. A pair of binoculars and your camera equipment can be taken aboard so that you will be able to document your excursion every step of the way.
It is always wise to check the weather conditions on the day of your trip so that you are prepared beforehand. Even though there are predicted monsoon seasons, you should be well geared for sudden downpours. Make sure that all excursion reservations are made in advance so that it suits your schedule. We suggest that you arrive at the docks earlier than the specified departure time.
We would also like to mention that dolphin sightings can be unpredictable at times and there might be occasions that you might not spot these mammals. However, the trip itself to the deep blue Indian Ocean is completely worth your time.

Whale Watching in Sri Lanka: The Search for a Blue Whale
Mirissa, Sri Lanka is a popular spot to go whale watching. We headed out into the Indian Ocean with the goal of seeing the largest animal in the entire world - a blue whale. There are only a few places in the world where you can see this incredible record breaking mammal. If you are in Sri Lanka, you shouldn’t miss this tour. It’s possible to see mink whales, sperm whales, dolphins, whale sharks, turtles, flying fish, and more. In this part of the world, the ocean is filled with amazing marine life.
There are a huge amount of whale watching tours in Mirissa. We went with Whale Watching with Geeth, and we weren’t disappointed. I’m sure most of them are similar, but I recommend talking to the actual person who will be running the tour to make sure they speak good English. Most tours will feed you a small breakfast and take care of transportation from your hotel to the boat in the morning. The cost is usually 6000-6500 LKR.
New videos are posted every Tuesday and Thursday at 3PM EST.

Whale watching in Mirissa, Sri Lanka with Raja & The Whales by The Flip Flop Family
No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without going Whale watching in Mirissa!
We teamed up with the very hospitable Raja & The Whales to explore the Indian Ocean in search of Whales!
In this video, you can see exactly what to expect when you book with Raja & The Whales. Their pricing is competitive at 6000Rs for adults and 3000Rs for children 6-12years old. We have friends who have used other companies and Raja & The Whales sounds more professional by far.
Itinerary
Your day starts early at 6.30am to give you the best chance of spotting the beautiful sea creatures. The crew try their very best to find Whales and have a very high success rate, however in the event that they are unable to find Whales, they will offer you another trip or give you 50% of your money back. You are well looked after on the boat and fed fresh fruits, a cooked breakfast and tea and cake. We retuned back home by 12.30pm.
Travelling with Kids
We went whale watching with both our young children aged 3 and 6years old. They enjoyed spotting the Dolphins and Whales but our younger child did start to get restless after 3-4hours on the boat. We advise that you take some games to play and an iPad as a last resort. Grumpy kids on board can definitely hamper your experience! There is a western toilet on board with toilet paper so no worries there.
Sea Sickness
The Indian Ocean can be rough so make sure you take some sea sickness medication. We were offered some by Raja & The Whales but we were already prepared! The team are experienced in helping passengers that start to feel unwell so make sure you alert them if you need some assistance.
Booking
It’s a family run company and you can feel the love during the trip. It is the same price when you book online or in person but they get booked up fast. They are very professional and get back to you very promptly. They also arrange a pick up from your hotel in Mirissa.

Blue Whale Watching Mirissa, Sri Lanka
In January 2011 we set sail to find the planets largest animal: the bluewhale.
We travel to Sri Lanka and go on board the vessel Queen of the Bluewhale in the little fishing harbour of Mirissa in the south of Sri Lanka. We have a great trip with Captn Raya, who is a former fisherman. By organizing whale watching tours, he turned into an enviromentalist. He explains the ecology of whales and why he is doing this job.
We encounter a school of dolphins and two bluewhales.
We recommend this tour as ecology and whale-friendly trip.

Kalpitiya Dolphin Watching
One of the main reason for tourist to visit the Kalpitiya area from November to March: you will see pods of 1000 dolphins! Dolphin watching tours are done.
Mirissa - Sri Lanka
Mirissa is one of the main beach destinations in southern Sri Lanka. The area has it all, beautiful beaches, surf waves, whale watching and great bars and restaurants. Mirissa is developing quickly over the last couple of years so it’s also getting more crowded. There are still enough spots where you can enjoy a fresh coconut from your hammock seeing the sunset. Spend about 2 – 4 days with these things to do in Mirissa.
Secret Beach, Mirissa
Ssst, this one is secret. A tiny secluded beach and not the easiest place to reach. That’s why Secret Beach is so beautiful. There are one small bar and a local woman selling coconuts. Enjoy an incredible sunset from Secret Beach. Search on Google Maps for Secret Beach bar and ask a tuk-tuk driver to take you there. You will need to walk about 10 minutes down the road since this is too steep for the tuk-tuks.
Parrot Rock
Right on Mirissa Beach is a small rock where you can climb up and see a bit of the Mirissa area. You have to walk a little bit through the water and with the high tide or wild water it’s not recommended to go here
Coconut tree spot
A 15-minute from Mirissa Beach is a small coconut farm on a hilltop. The view or sunset view from here is simply amazing. It’s quite easy to get here since the place is on Google Maps. You can access it via one of the restaurants nearby or by a small walk through the water. Be careful with the coconuts, we can tell from our own experience that coconuts will fall from trees.
Whale watching
Mirissa is very popular for its marine life. At the beach they offer whale watching tours, taking you out on the Indian Ocean for a few hours spotting whales, dolphins, and turtles. The best to spot whales is from the end of November until March.
Surfing
Mirissa Beach is a good spot to start surfing in Sri Lanka. The waves look great and since there’s just little crowd, surfers really love being here. Surf from October to March for ideal surfing conditions.
Chill at Mirissa beach
Mirissa Beach is crowded and still a very relaxing vibe. A handful of great restaurants are located on or near the beach who all offer a different kind of foods.
Colombo Airport to Mirissa by car
Arranging a taxi at the location will usually get you high prices. PickMe is an Uber-like service for long distances. Their prices can be directly calculated from their website. From Colombo Airport to Mirissa you will pay around $45 dollar for a 3-hours drive, English speaking driver, new car with aircon, and pick up from the airport.
