44871 + Oliver Cromwell - 08/04/10
The recently overhauled black five 44871 double headed the BR standard class pacific 70013, Oliver Cromwell into Crewe, platform twelve, pulling the Great Britain III from Bristol to Preston, which is the third day out of eight this tour is running, concluding of Wednesday 14th April. Despite the double pulling power and the first warm, dry rail conditions of the year it took three separate attempts for the train to labour out of the station, however this just added to the brilliance of it. Initially the train was nearly an hour and a half late into the station. By the time they finally left, the train was two and a quarter hours down.
Stunning image from Sir David Attenborough's new series Seven Worlds
It's not a fair fight but this gentoo penguin in the frozen wilderness of Antarctica makes a defiant stand against its main predator the leopard seal. The stunning image is from Sir David Attenborough’s new series Seven Worlds, One Planet, celebrated with a glorious picture special in today’s Daily Mail Weekend.Other photos released before the series, which begins next Sunday, show a cameraman filming elephant seals in Antarctica, and a group of golden snub-nosed monkeys huddling together in eastern China. Sir David in Kenya with one of only two northern white rhinos, both female, which survive in the wild. His new show, Seven Worlds, One Planet, starts on BBC One later this month Why don't polar bears eat penguins? The riddle is probably as old as any other that you will find in a Christmas cracker. And the answer is not difficult to work out: penguins and polar bears live at opposite ends of the world and never meet. Pictured, in mortal danger, a penguin tries desperately to escape the clutches of a leopard seal in AntarcticaThe series, which has been four years in the making, puts a conservation message ‘at the heart’ of each episode.Speaking at its launch, Sir David said the influence of humans on the planet was ‘everywhere… and we made a tragic, desperate mess of it so far’. But he added: ‘At last nations are coming together and recognising that we all live on the same planet... and we are dependent on it.’Asked what can be done to save the Earth, Sir David, 93, said: ‘The best motto is not to waste things.‘Don’t waste electricity, don’t waste paper, don’t waste food – live the way you want to live but just don’t waste.’The Ultimate Variety Show Planet Earth is home to an extraordinary range of life, differing wildly between continents. Scientists have wondered for centuries how our natural world came to be so diverse, yet interconnected. And now we know that the mystery can be explained by a dinosaur called mesosaurus. With its long, thick tail, powerful jaws and stumpy, frog-like legs, mesosaurus was a strange creature – like a newt the size of a small crocodile, living in freshwater lakes 280 million years ago. But the strangest thing about mesosaurus is that its fossils have been found on both sides of the Atlantic. Clear evidence of this early underwater reptile has been found in southern Africa as well as in South America. How can this be? There was no way it could swim across the south Atlantic. So why are its fossils found on two continents, 4,000 miles apart? The answer is that Africa and the Americas were once one, along with all the land mass on the planet – one supercontinent called Pangaea. But about 200 million years ago, it was ripped in two and then began to break up into the seven 'worlds' we know today – North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa and Antarctica. That's why, if you look at a map, the western bulge of Africa looks as though it would fit neatly into the Caribbean, between the Americas. On the Cotswold Way and Cleeve Hill
A 21km (13 mile) circular walk following part of the Cotswold Way near Cheltenham on a warm day in early spring. We visited Cleeve Hill - the highest point in the Cotswolds - and also Belas Knap, a 5,000-year-old neolithic long barrow (tomb). We set off from the village of Whittington and walked a clockwise route, which was full of interest and surprises. It took about 5 hours including picnic stops. Thundery showers to hit Britain this weekend after flooding misery
BRITAIN looks set to be pounded by thundery showers this weekend after downpours sparked flooding misery for parts of the UK. The Met Office warned there would be heavy rain which could turn thundery in the North of the county on Saturday. The wild weather could continue into Sunday, with thunder and strong winds predicted by forecasters. Conditions should be slightly more settled today, with warm spells of sunshine developing through the morning. But thousands of residents have been evacuated from a small town amid fears a reservoir dam could COLLAPSE and flood their homes. Police swept in to evacuate huge sections of Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire - population 6,5000 - after a 'danger to life' warning was issued. Hundreds of residents in the most at-risk area of the town were told they would face arrest if they did not leave their homes as fears grow over the flooding threat. The Environment Agency warned river levels in the River Goyt could rise rapidly as a result of water coming from the Toddbrook Reservoir if the dam bursts. Photographs show a large panels of the dam have crumbled away under pressure from the 300 million gallons of water behind it. The reservoir has swollen in recent weeks due to torrential rainfall in the north of England and crews were last night working to pump water away from the scene. Julie Sharman, chief operating officer of the Canal and River Trust, said: The spillway for the dam has broken away. We are trying to lower the level of the water in the dam in order to reduce the risk of further erosion. There's a risk the dam could break. Police said it was unclear how long evacuated residents would need to stay away from their homes. A police spokesman added: We understand that there will be some concern around not being able to return home, however, our priority is to ensure people are kept safe and well and are not taking unnecessary risks. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly and we appreciate that there is significant impact on this community, however, this is an unprecedented, fast-moving, emergency situation. Residents without anywhere to stay were told to gather at Chapel High School in the neighbouring town of Chapel-en-le-Frith. Evacuees were told to take pets and medication with them in case they are not able to return for several days. RESIDENTS FEARS Matt Forrest, who lives just six feet uphill from the reservoir and has watched the chaos unfold in his home town. The designer said: We live about six feet up from the reservoir so we have managed to dodge being evacuated but only just. The rest of the entire town has had to leave. I've never seen anything like it, its’ the worst flooding in living memory in the village. Trauma nurse Philomena Smith, 53, lives on a road above the reservoir worried her husband might not make it home tonight.. She said: “Many Whaley Bridge residents who were on the bridge yesterday looking over the dam said they have lived here a
Drivers cause multi-crash mayhem by going WRONG WAY down roads - as Britain braces for MORE snow
Britain is bracing itself for the coldest night in seven years with bone-chilling lows of -16C expected, as experts warn the black ice danger will last until Monday. This morning, South Western Railway has warned of delays due to the heavy snowfall, with Kent Police describing an 'incredibly busy night' as a result of multiple vehicles stranded on the A229 and A249.And reports of reckless motorists in the same country driving towards oncoming traffic in an an attempt to beat the delays on blizzard-hit roads.Dramatic images show vehicles being towed through the thick snow, and smashed-up cars discarded by the road-side - following one lorry-driver's dangerous attempt to manoeuvre down a tiny village road in Walderslade, Kent.Accrington's Sky Bet League One match against Blackpool was also postponed this morning because of freezing conditions following a pitch inspection.Volunteers had been asked to turn up from 8:30am help clear the snow from around the Wham Stadium, with the covers taken off the pitch. However, following an inspection referee Rob Lewis said it was unplayable due to the freezing weather overnight, Accrington confirmed in a post on the club's Twitter feed. The League Two game between Cheltenham and Cambridge was also called off on Saturday morning, with the club confirming on Twitter that an area of the pitch has been deemed unplayable due to freezing temperatures. It comes one day after airports were forced to close and hundreds of cars were left abandoned on blizzard-hit motorways - with drivers told to avoid the M3 at all costs due to it becoming 'impassable' at points. And tonight the mercury is set to plummet to -16C (3.2F) in Scotland as the bitter cold snap continues with parts of England also expected to see sub-zero temperatures reach double digits.Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: 'Over Saturday we'll see some snow showers around the far north, the far west and the far east of the UK.Elsewhere it's a cold day again and feeling especially cold in the south where it will be breezy, but for most it will be dry and sunny.' He continued: 'Tomorrow night it's likely to be very similar to Thursday night - we could get down to -16C (3.2F) in Scotland, but it's worth bearing in mind that even across the south we could get into negative double figures.' He said Benson in Oxfordshire was one of the spots predicted to reach -10C (14F) or below.'Across the bulk of the UK, tomorrow night's going to be really cold.' A fresh yellow warning for snow and ice covering large areas of the UK took effect from noon on Friday until the same time on Saturday. It covers northern Scotland, most of Northern Ireland, the eastern coast of England, the south of England and the west coast of Wales. On Friday, a coating of up to 14 cm of snow caused havoc in the South West, forcing motorists to abandon their cars and seek shelter as traffic stood still.Travellers were hit by long delays and schools closed their doors as February began with the coldest night

You Get What You Pay For: Vancouver Real Estate
Sometimes I feel people take for granted how good we have it living in a city like Vancouver and the quality of life we enjoy here. Sure it’s expensive but I don’t know of any city in Vancouver's league that is cheap! You get what you pay for... Clean air and water, incredible mountain views, amenities at your doorstep, Stanley Park, the Seawall, mild winters, warm dry Summers, world class restaurants and outdoor sports. I could go on and on. The bottom line is if you want to live in one of the best cities in the world don’t expect Real Estate prices to ever be cheap. Vancouver has been discovered by the world and I only see that popularity growing over the coming decades.
