Wanganui to Pipiriki on the Wanganui River Road,New Zealand,Monday 11th February 2019
After 3 days staying in an old converted schoolhouse at Brunswick, near Wanganui we set off for home not via the SH4 but the Wanganui river road to Pipiriki and then onto Raetahi.
It is beautiful countryside with native bush down to the river interspersed with tiny settlements where locals make their living from small farm holdings.
The highlight of the journey is Jerusalem where Sister Aubert established a Catholic Sisters of Compassion mission in the late 1800's and is also the site of a plain but beautiful Catholic church built in 1893.
A surprise find on the journey, which we had not found when driving this road 30+ years ago,was Kawana Mill established in 1854 and lovingly restored and well looked after.
Whanganui River Journey, Great Walk 6 of 9 - Living a Kiwi Life - Ep. 28
New Zealand's famous 'great walk' canoe adventure on the Whanganui River. Dubbed the Whanganui Journey this 3-5 day experience thrusts you into multiple rapids and through deep canyons. We loved this experience, even capsizing in the infamous 50/50 rapids. A cool side trip can be taken on the second last day to the 'bridge to nowhere', a pretty cool bridge in the middle of nowhere that has no purpose (except as a tourist attraction). The final day has the heaviest rapids!

About the Series:
Living a Kiwi Life is about a Canadian couple (me and Jenna) who have lived in Canada all our lives and made the decision to move to New Zealand having never gone there before. We quit our jobs, sold our houses and cars and left everything we knew to explore an unknown.

The Geographic Board has created a furore by recommending that the city of Wanganui be re-spelled Whanganui. There have been many places with Maori names that have been re-spelled over the years (an editor's nightmare!) but all have been small; this is the first city or sizeable town that has come up for re-spelling. The issue has already been put to local citizens by referendum and resulted in an 80% rejection, but that carries no weight with the Geographic Board.
Maori has only existed as a written language since European settlement and for some obscure reason the orthographers of the time decided to render the f sound as wh even though in other Polynesian languages f is used in spelling. In English, of course, an h after a w makes no difference to pronunciation. The issue is complicated by the fact that Wanganui is correctly pronounced in the local dialect like it is written now, and not with a f sound.
For most people who don't live in Wanganui the issue may be a storm in a teacup - but, what will be next? Using both Maori and European names has been the compromise often used, e.g. Somes Island and Matiu, Mt Cook and Aoraki, but the issue is certainly divided along racial lines and is not going to go away.

Wanganui - The River City
75km northwest of Palmerston North, the district of Wanganui (or 'Whanganui' -- either is acceptable) is rich in both Maori history and the conveniences of modern, urban life. The river of the same name (on which the main city stands), is a kayaker's delight, at 260km long, while the area's stunning scenery and ease of access make it a popular destination for holidaymakers.
