About this video:
It’s Day 59 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we are challenging ourselves to do 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand! Today we are exploring the city of Wanganui! What’s more all the things we are going to be doing are free (or very very cheap).
We take a look at the city centre architecture of Wanganui before hitting the Wanganui Museum. Next, it’s off to Durie Hill to take the historic Durie Hill Elevator which is down and awesome tunnel lined with Maori carvings.
After a bumpy ride up the Durie Hill Elevator, we arrive at the Durie Hill Water Tower which is free to climb up. We go up countless stairs of the Durie Hill Tower to get some awesome views of Wanganui City and the Whanganui River.
It’s back to our accommodation now, the 42b College House backpackers.
So what do you think of Wanganui? Is it a city you would like to visit in New Zealand?

Placing Tracksets Along Wanganui's Waterfront
(New Zealand) A 'Wanganui Loaders' digger is dragging a trackset into place along Moutoa Quay.
This position here is roughly halfway along the short tramline which stretches from the Wanganui Information Centre to the Whanganui Riverboat Centre (home of Whanganui's number one visitor attraction, the passenger steamer PS Waimarie).
The tracksets were assembled at 'Wanganui Tramways' yard beside the Tramshed before being dragged into their final alignment. The sets are made up of second hand NZR sleepers and 85lb / 91lb rail and laid to the standard gauge.

MV Wairua
Come sail the mighty Whanganui River on the MV Wairua - a genuine vintage Riverboat. The Wairua was one of the vessels used to carry settlers and supplies in the very early 1900's, and has been faithfully restored to first class condition with a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and you can see in this short doco. [R2] Double Doors! Schindler 3300 (EU) MRL Traction Lift/Elevator @ I-Site Whanganui
This is the SCHINDLER 3300 MRL traction lift/elevator at I-Site Whanganui. This lift runs very well and has a stylish interior. I like the use of double doors to improve accessibility and the use of chimes to aid blind users. This is the European version of the Schindler 3300 (Schindler 3300 EU) and not the Asia Pacific version (Schindler 3300 AP). I personally prefer the EU model as it uses blue LED's rather than the red LED's that the AP model uses. One of the reasons this lift runs better than other 3300's is because it only travels 2 floors which it's better suited too. IMO the Schindler 3300 is only suitable for buildings with 4 floors or less. The Schindler 5500 is more adequate for buildings with more than 4 floors as it's properly built and won't feel like it's falling apart.
Thanks for watching!

Wanganui Market & Virginia Lake - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 60: Today we check out the highly recommended Wanganui Riverside Market before doing a walk around Virginia Lake! Check out the New Zealand travel vlog now!
Yesterday - Day 59 -
Tomorrow – Day 61 –
About this video:
Today we are following local recommendations to check out the Wanganui Riverside Market before heading off to the beautiful Virginia Lake in Wanganui!
On the banks of the Whanganui River, we see what a traditional Kiwi farmers market looks like, full of crafts and food. We have a quick look around before heading to Virginia Lake Reserve in Wanganui with a series of walks around a lake. Virginia Lake is a stunning city park in Wanganui full of birds and plants. It’s an awesome way to spend the morning and stretch our legs before we hit the road to Ohakune.
We end our time in the city of Wanganui with the Virginia Lake then head straight to Ohakune on a road with waterfall lookouts and rolling hill scenery. We hope to either do some mountain biking or snowboarding tomorrow, so join us then!
