With a wide range of quality accommodation options, from cost effective to luxury there is something for everyone!
Only two and a half hours drive north from Auckland this is a relaxed haven and base for exploring the Tutukaka Coast, Bay of Islands, Waipoua Forest and other Northland attractions.
Stingray, McKenzie Bay, Whangarei Heads, Northland, New Zealand
Here's a Stingray we encountered while out kayaking in McKenzie Bay, Whangarei Heads, Northland New Zealand.
I was so excited that I misidentified McKenzie Bay as McGreggor's Bay - which is about a mile away. Everybody know that!
The stingrays come into the harbour to avoid the Killer Whales and to feed.
This one is less than a meter across, but we saw some big ones in the same bay in excess of 1.5m (5 feet).
Just around the corner from our bach.
DOC fighting to end poaching in Akaroa marine reserve
It is one of the only places in the world where seeing rare marine life is guaranteed, but the Department of Conservation is worried rule-breakers will put marine reserves off Banks Penninsula at risk. Over the last two summers 13 people have been convicted of illegally taking marine life in Akaroa marine reserve and nearby Pōhatu marine reserve. DOC was hoping this summer would see no infringements or convictions after an effort to increase awareness through better signage and education. But as Checkpoint video journalist Logan Church saw firsthand on a DOC patrol, it seems the message isn't getting through to all.
