-- About this video --
This morning we join our earliest tour yet as we race the tide to get to Farewell Spit in Golden Bay. Farewell Spit is New Zealand’s longest sand spit and one of the most protected areas in New Zealand. The environment is ever-changing here and we are about to learn all about it with Farewell Spit Eco Tours. Farewell Spit Eco Tours are the only operators allowed to come down Farewell Spit and the only company you can go with to access Farewell Spit. Hikers are forbidden. Along the way, we see the beautiful environment of Farewell Spit as well as New Zealand wildlife and the lonely Farewell Spit Lighthouse.
We also take a detour to Fossil Point on Farewell Spit to see ancient sea creatures captured in the rocks.
After our early morning tour of Farewell Spit in Golden Bay, we finish around 10am with plenty of time to explore more of this remote area of Golden Bay. Next stop, Wharariki Beach.
After driving down a long gravel road we arrive at a car park to a walk that leads to Wharariki Beach. Wharariki Beach in Golden Bay is known as one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World. After a walk through farmland, bush and sand dunes, we see way. Wharariki Beach has some awesome views of the Archway Islands making a stunning backdrop for photos. Wharariki Beach is also teaming with wildlife, which we end up spending time with on the way back we see some New Zealand fur seal pups. So Cute!
So what do you think of Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach in Golden Bay? Would you visit Farewell Spit or Wharariki Beach? Add them to your New Zealand Travel bucket list!

New Zealand- Wharariki Beach
From the car park at the end of Wharariki road, it is a 20 minute walk over rolling farm-land to Wharariki Beach, with its amazing sand dunes, caves and off-shore islands, According to Maori tradition, this is o te wairua o nga tangata o te Waipounamu, the place from which the spirits depart. North Island has a similar departure point for spirits on its northwestern tip. If you die on the South Island, this is your jumping off place to the life-beyond-death.
Most beautiful beach in New Zealand, WHARARIKI BEACH! Vlog 2
The wild northwestern coast of the South Island is the perfect place for a day adventure. In this area you'll find the Farewell Spit, with it's distinctive Kiwi shape curving round Golden Bay; the massive cliffs at Cape Farewell, and the one of a kind Wharariki Beach.
The north-facing sandy beach is accessible only via a 20-minute walking track from the end of Wharariki Road. The road end is approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the nearest settlement, the small village of Puponga. A camping ground is located along Wharariki Road, but the area surrounding the beach is devoid of any development. Wharariki Beach is bordered by Puponga Farm Park, with the wider area more or less surrounded by the northern end of Kahurangi National Park.
The beach is flanked to the east and west by cliffs, but due to the flat topology of the area behind it, the beach area and the grassy dunes behind it are quite exposed to winds.
Wharariki Beach is perhaps best known for the Archway Islands, featured frequently in photos in New Zealand landscape calendars.
The Archway Islands are a group of four rock stacks or small islands, with even the largest one of them measuring only about 300 by 200 metres (980 by 660 ft).
The largest of the islands is closest to the mainland and adjoins Wharariki Beach; it is generally not cut off by the sea. The second island lies about 150 metres (490 ft) offshore and is relatively flat and vegetated. The remaining two islands are typical rock stacks, with the larger one 66 metres (217 ft) tall and containing two natural rock arches, giving rise to the naming of the group of islands.
Abel Tasman Great Walk Hiking, Golden Bay National Park - Nelson New Zealand (South Island) 2018
Last weekend my friend Emma & I took on the Abel Tasman Walking trail.. its usually a 4 day hike, we were silly enough to try and complete the whole 66km in 2 days and one short afternoon.
We succeeded, although it was super tough, it was very rewarding to see some of our beautiful countryside, experience the thrill of nature, and the beauty of the beaches.
You can see Weka's, Seals, Native Birds, and much more. The trails are all very well groomed and maintained. The DOC huts are very comfortable, you have to carry all of your own equipment, food, and bedding with you. Doc huts must be pre booked on the web and are often booked out months in advance.
Yes we even carried bacon and eggs with us (much to the other trampers dismay)

Shooting Wharariki Beach - My Top Spot in New Zealand
Although I first visited during heavy downpour and the road was flooded, being able to visit this hidden gem was such a great experience! I had some hesitations about photographing the scenes given the weather, but I think I made something great by the end! The curious seal pups were an added bonus!

-- About this video --
Today we are leaving Nelson city but not without a stop at Tahunanui Beach just on the way out of Nelson. Then we have a long drive to Golden Bay over Takaka Hill!
The drive is tough but stunning as we go over karst open landscape that Takaka Hill is famous for. We arrive in Golden Bay and head straight to our first activity in the area: Te Waikoropupu Springs or Pupu Springs.
The entrance is guarded by Maori carvings to show the Maori significance of the area. We enter the Te Waikoropupu Springs walk with respect and make our way to Pupu Springs in Golden Bay.
We are met with the sight of the most stunningly clear water we have ever seen with a super blue colour. Te Waikoropupu Springs is a natural wonder not to be missed in New Zealand.
So what do you think of Te Waikoropupu Springs? Would you visit Pupu Springs in Golden Bay?

We drove all day for 2 hours at Wharariki Beach and it was WORTH IT! | NZ Family Travel Vlog
Wharariki Beach was the most beautiful place we saw on the South Island New Zealand, and we almost didn't make it.
We sold everything in 2017 to travel the world full-time. We run 3 businesses online to fund our travels and homeschool our son. We love making family travel vlogs to show our family travel to the world! Read on for our account info!
We only had 10 days on New Zealand's South Island, and most of our New Zealand Bucket List was in the opposite corner from Wharariki Beach. We found some extra time, though, and spent an entire day driving north just for the chance at 2 hours at Wharariki Beach!
It turned out to be the best part of our South Island New Zealand road trip. The beach is stunning, but the joy was more than just the beach. The walk from the parking lot to the beach is the best I've been on, with incredible scenery surprising us at every turn. The walk ends at mounds of soft sand dunes before leading you to the wide beach and rock islands.
What more could you want?!
Enjoy this family travel vlog on Wharariki Beach to see a time lapse of the walk, playing on the sand dunes, and drone video of the beach and islands!
Here is our sample itinerary for a New Zealand South Island road trip:

That way you can see where everything is when you’re planning your travel itinerary. There’s a bunch of other useful information there about road safety and driving that we hope will be useful for visitors to New Zealand and help keep them safe while they’re here.
Our goal at roadtripnewzealand is to provide the best content on the web for people who are looking for New Zealand’s choicest little places. We don’t focus on places you hear about all the time like Queenstown, Auckland, Rotorua and Milford Sound, we’re more interested in the special little places that make us glad we live in New Zealand. It’s our personal view of our country, what we like and what we love and we hope to give visitors the inside running on the best places to see and the best things to do.
The excellent music is licensed from Alan Ferguson who wrote and performed it and is a total legend.
