Lake Bled, Slovenia: Most beautiful place we have been! Plus the FAMOUS BLED CAKE!
Lake Bled was a secret destination Charlotte booked for my birthday as a treat... and we're finally here! This lake in Slovenia is set against the Julian Alps as well as Bled castle, but what makes it so epic is Bled island in the middle. And, lucky for us, Bled is also known for a DELICIOUS dessert known as the Bled Cream Cake

Lake Bled Travel Guide | Day Trip from Ljubljana, Slovenia Video Transcript:
Lake Bled is probably the most popular day trip you can take from Ljubljana. This is a lake that sits on the Julian Alps, and in the middle of the lake you have a small island with a church - it’s about as picturesque as it gets and it draws massive crowds, but first, the journey there.
Bled Castle is a medieval castle that was built on a cliff rising 130 meters over Lake Bled. According to written sources, this is the oldest castle in Slovenia, first being mentioned in a document from the year 1011. The castle is set up around two courtyards which are connected with a staircase. Once you’re there, you can visit the chapel, check out some of the exhibits, watch a demonstration at the castle forge, or eat at the castle coffee shop or restaurant.
After the castle visit, we hiked back down and started our walk along Lake Bled because we were still feeling pretty stuffed from lunch. Little did we know this would take us several hours to complete.
After eating our slice of Bled Cream Cake, or Kremsnita, it was finally time to arrange a boat ride to Bled Island. While you can rent your own row boat to take out on the island, we chose to pay the 14 Euros per person to have someone else do the hard work. However, if you’re with a group of friends or travelling with family, it’s definitely cheaper to just rent a boat and row it yourself.
Bled Island is very small and it got pretty crowded even though it was low season. Forty minutes turned out to be plenty of time to climb up, have a look around, and enjoy some ice cream.
Now one last piece of advice: we visited in the off-season and at the end of the day, we found out there were not enough buses to transport everyone from Lake Bled back to Ljubljana.
We weren’t able to get on one bus because it was full, so we waited an hour and a half for the next one. By then, more day-trippers like us had gathered, and once again, not everyone could get on the bus, leaving a lot of people stranded, having to find a taxi or other alternative.
There was a lot of pushing and shoving, and many visitors with prepaid tickets were visibly upset.
Because our bus was full, this also meant that even though there were several scheduled stops on the way back to Ljubljana, we couldn’t pick up any passengers along the way, many of them who had been waiting for hours.
Lake Bled has experienced a boom in tourism, but the infrastructure to transport people hasn’t quite caught up yet. After a nice day visiting Bled, getting out of there proved to be very chaotic and stressful. Hopefully things will change in the future, but until then, know that leaving at the end can be tricky.
This is part of our Travel in Slovenia video series showcasing Slovenian food, Slovenian culture and Slovenian cuisine.

Sunrise at Lake Bled from Ojstrica viewpoint
The hike to Ojstrica viewpoint only takes about 20 minutes, but trying doing it in the dark in order to get there for a dawn and sunrise photo shoot. Well I did it twice, and in this vlog I show you how I set out twice to try and capture the iconic image of the sun rising over the mountains behind the beautiful fairy tale Lake Bled and its stunning island church and cliff top castle.
I turn failure into success of a different kind, and then find success on a return trip.

DAY658 : LAKE BLED TIMELAPSE
Getting half lost on the way, we headed to the top of the hill while still dark. It was before sunrise when we got there, freezing like hell. Trying to set things up but all the equipments were frosted including the frozen hot tripod. According to the thermometer, it was minus 10 degree. The cold wind from Alps froze the coffee we made in 5 minutes. Feeling sorry for Heidi, I waited for the sunrise.

Bled and Bohinj - Slovenia
A settlement area since Mesolithic times, Bled was first mentioned as Ueldes (Veldes) within the March of Carniola on April 10, 1004, when it was awarded by Emperor Henry II to Bishop Albuin I of Brixen. Bled Castle was first mentioned in a 22 May 1011 deed in which Henry II donated it to Albuin's successor, Bishop Adalberon of Brixen. With Carniola, Bled was ceded to Rudolph of Habsburg after he defeated King Ottokar II of Bohemia at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278. From 1364 until 1919, Bled (Veldes) was part of the Duchy of Carniola, except for a stint between 1809 and 1816 as one of the Napoleonic Illyrian Provinces
After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Bled came under the rule of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and became a summer domicile of the ruling House of Karađorđević, a tradition that President Josip Broz Tito continued, when he built his residence here in 1947. Bled became an independent municipality in 1996. In 2000, Bled became the home of IEDC-Bled School of Management.
Bled is known for the glacial Lake Bled, which makes it a major tourist attraction. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle. The town is also known in Slovenia for its vanilla-and-cream pastry called kremna rezina (cream slice) or kremšnita.
Naturopath Arnold Rikli (1823--1906) from Switzerland contributed significantly to the development of Bled as a health resort in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Due to its mild climate, Bled has been visited by aristocratic guests from all across the world. Today it is an important convention centre and tourist resort, offering a wide range of sport activities (golf, fishing, horseback-riding) and is a starting point for mountain treks and hikes especially within the nearby Triglav National Park.
A small island in the middle of the lake is home to the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church; visitors frequently ring its bell for good luck. Human traces from prehistory have been found on the island. Before the church was built, there was a temple consecrated to Živa, the Slavic goddess of love and fertility. One can get to the island on a traditional wooden row barge called Pletna. The island on Lake Bled has 99 steps. A local tradition at weddings is for the husband to carry his new bride up these steps, during which the bride must remain silent.
Bled will be hosting the World Rowing Championships, for the 4th time in history, in 2011. It previously hosted the Championships in 1966, 1979 and 1989.[
Lake Bohinj is 4.2 km long and 1 km at its maximum width.[3] It is a glacial lake dammed by a moraine.
The largest of the streams that flow into the lake, the Savica River (little Sava),[4] is fed from Črno jezero (Black Lake), the largest lake in the Triglav Lakes Valley.
The outflow is the Jezernica which merges with the Mostnica to form the Sava Bohinjka (which in turn merges with Sava Dolinka to become the Sava).
The area is associated[clarification needed] with the legendary Goldhorn (Zlatorog), a white chamois with golden horns. A statue of the creature stands beside the lake
Lake Bled & Ljubljana, Slovenia
We spent a weekend in Slovenia exploring the stunning city of Ljubljana and Lake Bled. This video summarises what we got up to there!
Ljubljana is charming, beautiful and surprisingly lively. It’s really affordable (perfect for budget travellers) and the people are lovely. There’s quite a bit to see and do, but we felt a weekend was long enough to do the key attractions.
Lake Bled is located 475 metres above sea level in the Julian Alps in the north-western part of Slovenia. It’s absolutely beautiful and we highly recommend hiring a row boat to get to the little island, as well as hiking up to the castle.
If you’re looking for things to do in Ljubljana and Lake Bled in Slovenia, we recommend:
Traditional Slovenian Evening (folklore show and 3-course dinner)
Pub crawl Ljubljana
Ljubljana Castle
A day trip to Lake Bled! - Hire a row boat and pack a picnic.

Is Lake Bled in Slovenia A Tourist Trap?
Lake Bled is probably the most famous lake in Slovenia, but is it the best? It's certainly a beautiful part of the world, so we headed over to see what it was like.
As with most touristy places, a lot of them tend to be tourist traps, hiking their prices up to phenomenal amounts just because tourists are there, whether it's worth that much or not.
We visited Lake Bled in December and it was cold, but with the blue skies, the place still looked unreal - what a place. Actually, the whole country was amazing, it completely shocked us and is now up there as one of my favourite countries so far.
In summer, I can imagine Lake Bled being rammed with tourists, potentially making it unbearable, but as we were there out of season, it was really nice. As Goldie said in the video, Slovenia was the right amount of busy, not too many people and not completely dead.
Slovenia is a really nice country and somewhere I'd definitely recommend visiting, and I'll certainly be back to see more of the country.
In the middle of Lake Bled is an island, called Bled Island, which apparently was created by fairies. Goldie tells that fairytale in the video once we get to the island. To get to Bled Island, you need to get on a boat, and after walking past the boats, we walked back and ended up on the boat to the island. It's €15 for a return trip to Bled Island on the paddleboat. It's a bit of a rip off, but there's no other way of getting there out of season as you can't rent a boat with the rental shops being closed.
In the background of Lake Bled, you can see the Slovenian mountains which make for an amazing photo opportunity. On the side of the lake was a Christmas market, but in summer I can imagine all sorts of things going on here.
There's also a castle at the side of the lake that we never made it to.
so is Lake Bled a tourist trap? Kind of, but not overly. The boat ride is an absolute rip off, but the cafe on the Island was pretty cheap. Paying to get into a church is also something that I didn't fancy doing.
