Wheeldale Road Goathland Medieval or Roman Yorkshire England UK 2
May 2016
Wheeldale Roman Road
This fragment of ancient road on the North Yorkshire Moors is thought to be Roman. The building standards are below those normal for a Roman road, suggesting it may date from late in the era when the Roman administration was losing its grip on Britain.

048: Good Land of Goathland (Goathland, Mallyan Spout and Wheeldale Moor)
NORTH YORK MOORS WALK FEATURING GOATHLAND, MALLYAN SPOUT AND WHEELDALE MOOR
Good Land of Goathland”
Filmed 9th September 2015
Running time: 20 minutes
The North York Moors is a new area for me as I’ve not really explored there properly before now. In September 2015 I spend a few days getting to know the region starting my tour in a village better known as the fictional “Aidensfield” in a certain TV series…..
Filmed in the county of North Yorkshire. Locations include Goathland, West Beck, Mallyan Spout and the Wheeldale Roman Road. This is the first film in the North York Moors.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

Wheeldale Moor & Cropton Forest, North York Moors - 11 December 2011
Approx 11-12 mile walk over Wheeldale Moor. The route starts at Wheeldale Bridge and heads north along the old roman road. The route eventually meets the route of the Lyke Wake walk where we headed west. Here we crossed Wheeldale Moor passing Raven Stones and the boundary stone called Blue Man-i'-th'-Moss. After crossing the moor the route briefly heads south on the single road from Egton Bridge to Rosedale. After about 50m the route leaves the road heading south east towards Hamer Moor and Cropton Forest. The route then walks through the woodland before joining Keys Beck Road and heading north back to the starting location.

Travel Vlog 2
I went to visit Goathland which is a beautiful village, hidden away in the North Yorkshire Moors. Goathland was used as the setting for Aidensfield in the ITV show Heartbeat. More recently Goathland Railway Station appeared in the Harry Potter films, as Hogsmeade Village.
After Goathland we travelled nearby to the Wheeldale Roman Road which is a mile-long stretch of ancient road in the wild moorland. The road is supposed to be Roman but possibly later or earlier, it still has its hard core and drainage ditches.

Wheeldale Gill - Stape Road ~ 29th July 2013
Travelling southwards from Wheeldale Gill across the ford up and over the hill to Wheeldale Bridge. The first time I came across this ford on my Harley, it was deeper and I very nearly bottled it. I love this spot in the North York Moors and so do many more on a sunny weekend, it can get very busy

Wheeldale Moor & Cropton Forest, North York Moors - 9 February 2013
Just under a 12 mile round trip from the moor top road between Egton Bridge & Rosedale the route heads south towards Cropton Forest. Through Cropton Forest we come across a shooting hut before we head east towards Wheeldale Bridge. From here we return by joining the Lyke Wake Walk (boggy in places) via Blue Man-i'-th'-Moss Standing Stone. Music is My Star by Ian Brown
WHEELDALE MOOR & ROSEDALE TOP
Easter weekend and true to form the North Yorkshire weather was unsettled to say the least. We ventured onto the North Yorkshire Moors, just North of Pickering in the U.K. looking for the crash site of a German Luftwaffe Dornier Do-217 E-4. The aircraft crashed onto the Moor on the night of 17th December 1942 after being hit by Anti-aircraft fire whilst en route to Bomb the city of York.
In the early 1970`s there were large pieces of the aircraft strewn across the Moor. In the years since, the site has been picked over by walkers & enthusiasts. All that remains on the surface are a few scraps of aluminium, a small reminder of this traumatic event.
We intend to visit the crash site during the dry Summer months and film the site from the air using the DJI Drone.
The weather wasn`t kind to us so we abandoned the search and drove a circular route back toward Rosedale and the old Iron Works.
At the top of Chimney Bank stand the remains of the Iron Kilns and further up the bank on the opposite side of the road is an abandoned Royal Observer Corps Post which closed around 1968.
The entrance hatch had been welded shut but is now easily opened....but the Post is flooded.
