WHISKEY FLAT DAYS, Kernville, California, USA
The 2011 Whiskey Flat Days will be held February 18-21.
It is the 54th Annual and the theme is Goin' To The Dogs.
This is a family event for everyone who is interested in the
history of the Wild West in the United States. The time period
is the 1850's to early 1860's. All parade entries feature the
annual theme. Much like other theme festivals, you are
encouraged to dress the part. There are gunfighters, Indians
and scruffy mountain men. Kids can explore the carnival,
watch the Rodeo or visit the Indian encampment and learn
to shoot a bow and arrow! The Whiskey Flat Encampment,
across from the Rodeo, takes you back in time, with period
correct living quarters, story telling and activities. Downtown
Kernville features an Epitaph Contest, Frog Jumpin' Contest,
Whiskerino Contest, vendors, music and more! For a schedule
of the Whiskey Flat Encampment reenactment activities go to

Kernville - John Malcolm Penn
Original song from the album 'Southern California Mines', available at johnmalcolmpenn.com
Kernville is California State Historical Landmark #132. Plaque Inscription: Called Whiskey Flat until 1864, Kernville was founded in 1860 when whiskey dealer Adam Hamilton moved shop here from more temperate Quartzburg, founded earlier that year. Both camps resulted from a discovery by 'Lovely' Rogers, who found the Big Blue Ledge while tracking a stray mule from the earlier camp of Keysville.

Rediscovering The Old Mule Trail - Kernville
Mountain Biked up Cannell, hike-a-biked up Powers Peak Trail to Harley Mine, then descended this steep trail carved out of ultra rugged terrain in the 1877: The Old Mule Trail. The actual trail is in great condition, but is really bushy and littered with bike tire eating yucca plants. Lots of bear and deer tracks! Extremely beautiful views. 3,000 foot vertical.

Boy Shes Smart ! 2014 Whiskey Flat Days Rodeo. Her first ever Rodeo
Boy Shes Smart (Peanut)is running 3D times right now with limited hauling I have no doubt that this mare will finish out to be a tough 1D horse. She is push style, she is also patterend on the poles and has a lot of natural rate runs in a snaffle or Jim Warner Hackamore. Peanut has also been Ranched on and also been used at Ranch Rodeos in the Ranch Sorting, Sort N Rope and Ranch Penning. She has been sorted on many times and is super catty at everything she does this is one fast little mare! She would make a awesome all around rodeo horse wouldnt take much to finish her out in the breakaway and on the heel side. This mare has a huge stop on her. She is as broke as they come Peanut is also straight up in a bridle! She has tons of trail miles on her as well super quiet on the trail, walks in and out of the arena. Her half brother Lets Play Rodeo is a mutiple 1D barrel horse and was the C-N 2013 Futurity 1D average winner he places in the 1D against tough rodeo horses . All of the hard work is done with this mare she just needs to be hauled . Moving forces sale I can only take one horse with me .
Sequoia National Forest Fees Meeting, Kernville

Citizens nationwide are resisting US Forest Service attempts to use the FLREA law to charge fees on formerly free Public Lands. A July 15 Town Hall in Lake Isabella, California gave Kern River Valley residents an opportunity to voice their concerns. OTB4MTB | Just Outstanding Self Shuttle Day | Kernville, CA
Another short ride adventure for Erik and I. We like to self shuttle this trail and make an 18 mile loop out of it. Parking at the intersection of Waggy Ridge & Old State Rd we climb to all the way to the intersection of HWY 155 and Old State Rd. From there it's a short switchback to Rancheria Rd for a quick stop at the benches before hitting Unal Trail.
Unal (not shown in the video) is a nice lead in trail to hit before Just Outstanding and starts with a switchback and a great climb before leading into some punchy obstacles and sections that are hike-a-bike except for the most seasoned technical climbers. Once you arrive at the bench, stop and enjoy the view. Unal then flows back down to Rancheria Rd and after more climbing leads to Alta Sierra Ski Parking Lot.
From the lot push on and gain speed on Rancheria Rd. and hit the Just Outstanding trail head on the right. There are a few road crossings, but where JO pick up again is obvious. JO is a great, flowy, and scenic trail: fun and filled with many features for advanced riders to enjoy, yet tame enough to take those new to mountain biking out and get them hooked on riding. JO is MOSTLY down hill, but let me tell you - there are some punchy little climbs that change depending on the seasons, sometimes rutted and filled with debris, or covered with roots. The creek crossings are built up to ride over, but in wetter months can become a bit deep.
Once at the end, JO will dump you out at Waggy Ridge Rd. For this loop we go left and climb, and climb, and climb some more until at the top of Waggy Ridge, then it's down hill all the way back to the intersection and our cars.
Over all JO lives up to it's name. And when you're done I can't think of any better way to contribute to the caretaking of this trail than by stopping at Kern River Brewing Company and having some food and a few pints of Just Outstanding Ale with your riding mates - yes Just Outstanding Ale - named after the trail. KRBC sponsors the trail and helps regularly maintain it.
Hope this inspires you. Now get out and go ride!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM KERNVILLE, CA.
Feather River at Whiskey Flats Bridge (2005).
Major amounts of snow in the mountains and rain in the lowlands had Feather River looking like the muddy Mississippi. There was lots of erosion that year, uncovering gold deposits.
