Algonquin Park - Views Along Whiskey Rapids Trail - Episode 2
#Algonquin #camping #hiking #trails
Our Algonquin Park Series continues as we take you along the river and trail of Algonquin's Whiskey Rapids Trail. The previous summer we were unable to hike this trail because of flooding that caused the trail to be unsafe.
The trail follows part of the Oxtongue River which eventually leads to Whiskey Rapids. The views are very picturesque and quite accessible. There are places to go down to the river's shores to either play in the water or sit and have a snack along the water's edge. This was one of Chloe's favourite hikes because there were several areas she could play in the water without having to swim.
Like most trails in Algonquin Park, Whiskey Rapids Trail is great for hikers looking to spot wildlife, wildflowers and a variety of mushrooms.

Whiskey Rapids - Algonquin Provincial Park
This is a video I took of the raging Whiskey Rapids located at the end of a short trail in Algonquin Provincial Park.
The Mizzy Lake Trail at Algonquin Provincial Park
A video I made of my visit to the Mizzy Lake Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park in Southern Ontario.
Even though it was late April there was still a lot of snow on the ground which made for slippery and wet trails.
I didn't get a chance to hike the whole trail because at one point I kept falling up to my knees and waist in the snow and I only had shorts on! Snowshoes would have surprisingly been a good idea.
At the end of the video you'll be able to see two of the moose I was able to catch a glimpse of during my drive home.
Keep up with me online!

Algonquin Provincial Park: Late Spring on the Whiskey Rapids Trail (May 2016)
The Whiskey Rapids Trail closely follows the banks of the Oxtongue River in the southwestern corner of Algonquin Provincial Park. For much of the trail, the river is a very calm watercourse. The hiker is rewarded with a view of the Whiskey Rapids after seeing the beautiful stands of spruce trees, as well as the budding branches and newly formed leaves in springtime. The trail is prone to flooding during the springtime, though I visited during a dry spell. Due to the dry weather, the trail only some small, scattered muddy portions.
This video was shot in late May, 2016.
Two Rivers Trail: Algonquin Park Fall Colours 2018 Family Hiking
We enjoyed hiking the Two Rivers Trail. It's a fairly easy 2.3 km loop that includes a short ascent to a pine-clad cliff with fall views. Elowyn is 22 months and loved singing and hiking on this trip to Algonquin.

Bat Lake Hiking Trail, Algonquin Park - Winter Hiking
Bat Lake Trail is located at kilometre 30.0 on Highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park.
Bat Lake is a 5.6 km loop trail that introduces you to basic Algonquin Park ecology while visiting a beautiful hemlock stand, a fine lookout, and acidic Bat Lake.
On the day we visited in early February, there was under 30 cm of snow on the ground. The previous day was warm and rainy, so there was a thin crust of ice on the snow and fantastic cascades of ice clung to the cliffs on either side of the steep ravine near the west end of the trail.

Track and Tower Trail, Algonquin Park
The Track and Tower Trail at km 25.0 on Highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park, is one of our favourite hiking trails in the park. It passes through a variety of interesting landscapes, including beaver ponds, lakes, and old burn zone, Eastern Hemlock and Cedar groves, a historic train railway bed with evidence of trestles visible and a nice lookout where an old fire tower used to stand.

Hilliard Lake, Algonquin Provincial Park
This video is about Hilliard Lake, Algonquin Provincial Park
Hilliard Lake is a relatively minor lake, with through-traffic and fishermen predominating the activity here. Portages in and out are moderate.
The shoreline of Hilliard Lake is typical for Algonquin Park lakes - primarily white and jack pine, spruce and cedar. The surrounding forested hillsides, which are low and barely visible, are comprised of mixed coniferous and deciduous trees.
Fishing for Splake, a hybrid between Lake Trout and Brook Trout, are stocked regularly and fishing is above average, depending on the latest stocking statistics. Splake grow quickly and therefore two years following a significant stocking year should result in good fishing.
The one campsite on the north end of the lake, found 600m from the Cache Lake portage, was occupied so I didn't get a good look at it. It appeared decent from the water, with an open view down the lake to the setting sun in the west.
I did not linger long in Hilliard Lake and quickly paddled to the south end of the lake to tackle the short 350m portage into Delano Lake. Continue Day 1...
