SCOTCH: THE GOLDEN DRAM is available now on DVD & Digital courtesy of Parkland Entertainment and Munro Films. SCOTCH THE GOLDEN DRAM is directed by Andrew Peat. Shot entirely on location in Scotland, Scotch: The Golden Dram tells the story of Uisge beatha, Gaelic for water of life. It is time to tell the story of uisge to the world. While capturing stunning Scottish landscapes, the real heart of the film is the characters - the fascinating people who make Scotch whisky. The film explores some of the biggest names in the industry, including Richard Paterson, a master blender whose nose was insured for $2.5 million, Glasstorm, a company specialising in hand-made bottles for rare whiskies that sell for over $10,000 each, and the Cinderella tale of Jim McEwan, the distiller and master blender, a 50 year plus industry veteran who takes on a dilapidated distillery on his home island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides and turns it into an award-winning blend. McEwan acts as the film’s ambassador, guiding us to discover the process and the people, who they are, their personal histories, how they came to immerse themselves in the art and science of making whisky, their drive for perfection.

Culloden Moor in Scotland • Scene of the Battle of Culloden in 1746
We visit Culloden Moor, scene of the Battle of Culloden in 1746. At Culloden Moor on a sleeting April day in 1746, Charles Edward Stuart led his Jacobite army to ultimate disaster at the Battle of Culloden. The last battle to be fought on British soil took less than an hour to reach its bloody conclusion.
Bonnie Prince Charlie's army of 5,000 Jacobites faced 9,000 well-armed British troops under the command of the prince's distant cousin, General William Cumberland. Many Jacobites were killed as they lay wounded on the battlefield or after being taken prisoner.
Government dragoons were dispatched to hunt down fleeing Jacobites. The dragoons roamed far and wide, indiscriminately killing rebels, bystanders, spectators, residents and anyone else who was within reach in the aftermath of the battle. It is estimated that the total dead on the Jacobite side was well over 1,000. Nearly 3500 Jacobites, supporters and others were taken prisoner in the aftermath of Culloden. Cumberland later became known as Butcher Cumberland for the atrocities committed after the battle ended. Culloden marked the end of a sporadic civil war for Succession that had lasted 60 years. After that, Jacobite hopes of another “Restoration” were effectively dead.

Visiting Scotland - Thinking about Holidays in Scotland or Planning a Trip?
Visiting Scotland - Thinking about Holidays in Scotland or Planning a Trip? Here’s one area that seems to be Scotland’s little secret…
We wanted to start off by exposing an area of Scotland that seems to have been kept hidden from so many people for so long…it’s like Scotland’s own little secret.
You will probably be familiar with the rugged beauty of the West Coast of Scotland, the Highlands and Islands or popular tourist destinations like Perthshire but what about Dornoch in Sutherland?
Dornoch is in the Highlands of Scotland just North of Inverness. It’s ideal for a short break or weekend breaks in Scotland. Flights to Inverness are easy enough and you can strike out north from there. Maybe you are considering doing the North Coast 500 route….an incredibly scenic road trip around the top of Scotland.[
If you’re a golfer…then you absolutely must play Royal Dornoch Golf course. It is one of the finest links courses in the world and Scotland’s best. Sound outlandish, then check it out. Playing golf in Scotland is always a joy and challenge…there’s certainly plenty of courses to choose from…just watch those bunkers, the gorse and if on the coast, the sea breeze!
Check out Royal Dornoch Golf course via this link:
In Dornoch, there’s plenty of things to do and places to visit, just like other areas of Scotland. It makes an ideal base to strike out from.
To travel to Scotland is to experience hospitality on a different level, whether you’re looking for fine hotels, luxury lodges, self-catering, bed and breakfasts, caravan parks to campsites, you’ll find it all in Scotland. Caravan holidays in Scotland can be a joy as so many are right next to some incredible beaches and the campsites in Scotland in spectacular locations.
Here are some links you may find useful:
In Dornoch you are right next to some of the most amazing beaches with Dornoch beach and Embo beach.
However you choose to spend your Scottish holiday, you’ll find plenty to do. In Dornoch there’s some great sightseeing, as well as shopping and a great choice of restaurants, bistros, pubs and takeaways.
But really you want to get outdoors and enjoy the beaches, walking, golf, fishing, shooting, cycling and many more outdoor activities. If you want something a little less energetic, then a visit to the stunning Dunrobin Castle and its beautiful gardens is a must. To get in to Skibo Castle is a little more difficult but if you bend the right ears, you might be able to get a round of golf in!
Also, make sure you don’t miss a tour of the local whisky distilleries and have a dram or check out some of the local museums. You might even still be able to win a bottle of very exclusive whisky only available direct from the distillery….
Visiting Scotland is always a joy for so many people but those that discover Dornoch seem to keep on coming back….I wonder why?
Now, what to see in Scotland next?

The 2 whisky distilleries in Scotland that are a blast to visit ????
Making whisky (or whiskey if you are not from Scotland) is no easy feat! Hundreds of accumulative years go into making even your simplest, run of the mill the bottle of blended whiskey. Let alone the single malt whiskies that are aged for 12, 18, 20 or even 40 years! ????
We had a blast at our two, very first whisky distillery tours and we’d visit exactly the same ones given the chance of going back in time ????
Let us know what’s your favourite moment from the video…. for us, the Germans dancing is very close to the top! ????
???? Glengoyne distillery - Golden Model Tour
???? Highland Park distillery - Magnus Eunson Tour
???? Popping in at Talisker Bay Distillery
???? Checking out the doors at Glenmorangie Distillery
Our newfound appreciation for whisky lies in the time it takes to create it. Consider the time it takes to grow the trees to make the oak or sherry barrels. Then, some distilleries use peat that’s developed in the soil for 1000s of years. The barley must grow and then be harvested. Once the liquid is distilled, it’s kept in the barrels to age until fully matured based on the distilleries needs and the master distiller’s taste.

Clava Cairns ‘Craigh na Dun’ / Inverness, Scotland, inspiration for Outlander TV Series
In the first series of Outlander, Claire Randall, on her honeymoon with her husband in Scotland after World War II, visits Craigh na Dun, a make-believe prehistoric stone circle near Inverness, and falls through the stones—and into the 18th century.
Most Outlander Fans come to Inverness wanting to visit the real Craigh na Dun only to find out that there is no such place but there is a standing stone circle that happens to be only five minutes drive from Culloden Battlefield called Clava Cairns. This is not the fictional Craig na dun as Clava cairns has three big cairns which are not found in the fictional stone circle.
Apparently Diana only visited Clava Cairns for the first time after she had written the the first Outlander book and was surprised that it happened to have a cleft stone in it. She used this stone on the back cover of one of the books.

There are lots of standing stones and stone circles in the Inverness area but none that are called Craigh Na Dun. There is however a standing stone on a hill that overlooks Inverness just as Diana described in her books but the hill is not called Craigh Na Dun it’s called Craig Dunain

So where is Craigh Na Dun? In the show they made stones and erected them at a beauty spot in Kinloch Rannoch, which i talked about in my last vlog.
