The Blusson Spinal Cord Centre
The Blusson Spinal Cord Centre is celebrating its tenth anniversary this fall. This video celebrates the researchers, clinicians, and community members who spend their time here.
The Blusson Spinal Cord Centre is home to ICORD, Vancouver Coastal Health’s Brenda & David McLean Integrated Spine Clinic and Vancouver Spine Research Program, the Rick Hansen Institute offices, UBC's Digital Emergency Medicine, and the Tetra Society wood working shop.
This unique facility is dedicated to advancing world-leading integrated research and care for people with spinal cord injury. Combining research and clinical space in the same building allows investigators to rapidly translate discoveries into validated clinical practices to ensure effective outcomes are achieved.
How was the BSCC funded?
In 2001, Dr. John Steeves, UBC professor and director of ICORD applied to the Canada Foundation for Innovation for a $12.9 million infrastructure grant to fund a dedicated spinal cord injury research centre. Co-applicants on the application included Drs. Wolfram Tetzlaff, Tom Oxland, Janice Eng, Marcel Dvorak, and Tim O’Connor. The application was supported by the Rick Hansen Foundation.
The CFI grant was awarded in 2002, and was matched by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund. Additional funding for the building was provided by UBC. Vancouver Coastal Health provided the site, as well as funding for the clinical floor. VCH Research Institute also contributed. Construction was able to go ahead when Marilyn & Stewart Blusson made their generous donation through the Rick Hansen Foundation. Support for the clinic was provided by Brenda & David McLean and Margaret & Angus Reid.
BSCC construction funding:
Canada Foundation for Innovation: $12.9M
BC Knowledge Development Fund: $12.9M
Marilyn & Stewart Blusson, through the Rick Hansen Foundation: $8.75 M
University of British Columbia: $8.15M
Vancouver Coastal Health: $2M
VCH Research Institute: #330,000

Murray Foster and OICC - Open Arms
Music Video: Great Big Sea's Murray Foster dedicates Open Arms to the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre (OICC).
It was a privilege to write Open Arms and to dedicate it to the patients of the OICC. Having seen the facility, it seems to me to be long-overdue. Dugald Seely and his team have a passion for the OICC that is contagious, said Murray Foster.
The music and lyrics of Open Arms convey the overwhelmed feelings of someone having been diagnosed with cancer, lost and out of control, and searching for a place of healing where they can find care for their whole being.
Help the OICC improve quality of life for patients living with cancer.

Matthew Gerwing works hard to achieve his goal of becoming a firefighter
Matthew Gerwing came to Fortius Sport & Health with a knee injury. He also needed some assistance in pursuing his life goal: Become a firefighter.
Here is a list of practitioners he worked with in order to achieve his goals:
Sean Mc Keown - Strength & Conditioning Coach:
As part of the integrated practitioner team at Fortius Sport & Health, Strength & Conditioning Coach Sean Mc Keown is an experienced practitioner within the health and fitness industry. Sean previously held the position of Director of Strength and Conditioning for 5 years with Dolphin Rugby Club in Ireland - a top Division 1 team - and holds a Master`s Degree in Sport Performance. He has worked with a vast variety of elite, sub-elite, professional and amateur Rugby players and is specifically skilled in designing and implementing integrated strength & conditioning programs as well as functional movement systems - including the development of appropriate corrective programs. Being born and raised in Ireland, he has a passion for Gaelic games and has played Gaelic football as his primary sport to the highest club level in Ireland.
Ryan Murray - Physiotherapist:
Ryan Murray has been a Physiotherapist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist for over 8 years. Ryan enjoys working with all levels of athletes to develop sport specific exercises to prevent re-injury and facilitate elite performance. Growing up playing high-contact sports like football and basketball, he quickly became introduced to physiotherapy through his own personal injuries. Soon he became more interested in what happens off the field rather than on, and his passion for rehabilitation began.
The love of sports and competitive play has continued throughout his career, working with professional and amateur athletes like the Vancouver Giants, the Junior and Senior Men's Canadian National Field Hockey Team, and the Men's Premier Columbus FC Soccer Team. He continues to explore new ways of physical therapy, and is currently pursuing a Sports Diploma through Sport Physiotherapy Canada.
Ryan believes in establishing a strong sense of community. He enjoys an active lifestyle and has volunteered with many local high school and community teams throughout the years. An avid cyclist and triathlete, Ryan has participated in the GranFondo Whistler, Ride to Conquer Cancer to Seattle, the Delta Triathlon, and the Vancouver Triathlon.

Use EFT To Clear Patterns of Self-Sabotage Nick Ortner at Wanderlust's Speakeasy
Your goals, dreams and aspirations: if you're not achieving them, then at some level they are connected to a fight or flight response. Hear the fascinating theory behind how tapping works from Nick Ortner, who breaks it down for the Wanderlust Speakeasy crowd with a sense of humour and compassion.
These days, says Nick, we are activating our fight or flight responses in a variety of circumstances. Frustrated goals, mounting stress, patterns of self-sabotage: at the most basic level are stress responses related to fight or flight responses. The latest research shows us that when we hit these meridian points in the body while focusing on certain issues, we are actually sending a signal to the amydgala in the brain. The amygdala is the fight or flight response center. In this Speakeasy lecture, Nick explains how tapping can release these fears and patterns.
Nick Ortner is the producer of the documentary film, The Tapping Solution. Nick is a searcher, constantly reading, exploring and experimenting with the incredible information all around that can change lives. When he found EFT Tapping, and was startled by the results, he knew he had to find a way to get this information into the mainstream. He produced The Tapping Solution, a best-selling documentary film that features 10 people overcoming enormous challenges by using EFT Tapping. The film features experts like Jack Canfield, Bruce Lipton, Joe Vitale, Bob Proctor, Cheryl Richardson, Dr. Joe Mercola and more. He also produced the worldwide online event The Tapping World Summit, which has been attended by over 500,000 people in the past four years (all for free!) and manages the monthly membership program, the Tapping Insiders Club. He has produced and coordinated other project s on health and wellness, such as David Wolfe's 21 Days to Health program, and is an owner and managing director of another documentary, Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes In 30 Days.
