According to classical mythology, the Giants of Hercules in a fierce battle to be killed, buried on the island of Mykonos in imposing blocks of granite.
The name of Mykonos, slightly pejorative meaning, a mass of rocks or a rocky point at a later tradition attributes the name of the island, a hero by the name of Mykonos, the son of the King of Delos, Anios, the son of Apollon and was nymph Rhoioa descendant of Dionysos.
Kares and Phoenicians have been the first inhabitants of Mykonos, but Athens was founded by Ionians colonists, and dispossessed the control of the island around 1000 BC, with the former residents.
Mykonos history
Historical sources confirm the following in the ancient world there were two towns on the island in 490 BC, the Persian generals Datis made Artaphernes and a brief stopover in Mykonos, it was resources. In a poor island with limited agricultural ancient, pantheistic times Dionysus, Demetra, Zeus, Apollon, Poseidon and Heracles, the principle gods were worshiped here.
Later in history the island belonged to the Romans and later the Byzantines, who have fortified the island against the Arab raids in the 7th Century, retained control of it until the 12th Century.
After the fall of Constantinople, at the end of the 4th Crusade (1204), occupied the island when her Seigneur (Fortress) by Andrea and Jeremia Ghisi relatives Dandolo, the Doge of Venice. In 1292 it was pillaged and plundered by the Catalans, and later, in 1390, given by the Venetians in 1390, the last of the Ghizi Overlord. In 1537, still under Venetian rule, the island suffered a catastrophic attack by Barbarossa, the admiral of Souleiman the Magnificent.
Later, under Kapudan Pasha, head of the Ottoman fleet, the island virtually self-governing, under the system known as the period of one and a council official voivod (syndics body), which always tries to keep an equal distance from both Turks and Venetians (the last of which finally withdrew from the region, in 1718, after the fall of the castle of Tinos to the Ottomans).
The most popular of Mykonos (which has fluctuated during the current period, usually 2000-5000 people) were from colonies of immigrants (from the nearby island and as well as from Crete) during the period of famine and epidemics that followed often the times of conflict has risen by the end of the 18th Century.
The Mykonos, who were in the same period known as excellent sailors, were successful in trade and shipping, and was also not unheard of piracy. Many islanders were in the “Orloff revolt” (led by the Orloff brothers, from 1770 to 1774), which resulted in a favorable active for them and for Catherine the Great in, due to the highly profitable contracts for the trade between the Ottomans and the Russian Empire.
In the early 30′s already started a lot of famous artists, politicians and wealthy people, mainly from Europe, spending holidays on the island, attracted by its unique atmosphere. Mykonos has adapted well to the post-war situation and the gradual growth of the tourism industry in Southern Europe, the island has turned into a cosmopolitan city and is one of the most successful growth models of its kind and scale in Europe.

Mykonos is the Greek St Tropez. A beautiful island in the Cyclades that looks exactly like postcards: small white houses with blue flowers and shutters, painted streets, windmills, dovecotes, a myriad of small churches and superb restaurants and cafes. Architecture: With the exception of the capital of Mykonos, Chora, one notices throughout the island the traditional architecture of the Cyclades: small white cubes, a single floor most often, scattered in the landscape like small ice cubes . The city of Mykonos however offers another architectural style, unique in the region: on both sides of narrow and tangled streets you can see houses reminiscent of medieval styleThe capital, Chora, is the most beautiful place to explore. Stroll to the windmills, feed the pelicans Petros (the stone) and Irini (peace), have a drink in the small harbor and visit the Parapotiani church. You will find Greek restaurants as well as Most of which are located in Chora, the capital. The specialties of the island are the Louza Loukaniko (a kind of special sausage), and the Kopanisti (a goat cheese with a lot of pepper).
In reality, you will find in Mykonos every kind of food, from Souvlaki and Gyros to Italian pasta or pizza, pancakes, haute cuisine restaurants or fish taverns.

La ville de Mykonos cependant offre un autre style architectural, unique dans la région: de part et d'autres de ruelles étroites et enchevêtrées on peut voir des maisons rappelant le style médiévalLa capitale, Chora, est le plus bel endroit à explorer. All the gear we use -
Mykonos is one of the best greek islands to visit. It's filled with beautiful landscapes, idillic beaches, and a devilish nightlife.
When visiting Mykonos you have to visit the great Mykonos beach clubs. During our most recent visit, we went to Nammos and Scorpios which are the 2 hottest clubs on the island. Also, you have to visit Mykonos City Center or Mykonos old town. This is where all the famous white Mykonos Instagram photos are taken. The city has beauty like no other in the world. When deciding what to do in Mykonos, you have to plan for a slower day of travel than usual. Getting around the island can be a bit slower than other locations.
In our mykonos travel guide, we show you the best beach clubs, where to eat in mykonos, and how to have a great mykonos party during your vacation.
During our time, we stayed at the Utopia hotel which is part of the Mykonian collection. A group of 5-6 hotels that are ~30 mins from Mykonos town. It's great because you have access to so many pools and a private beach club, but the 30 min drive to the city can be annoying at times.
Thanks for watching! You guys rock :) - Scott & Collette

Greece Travel: Mykonos Island Greece
Welcome to the most famous cosmopolitan island of Greece, a white-painted paradise in the heart of the Cyclades. According to mythology, Mykonos was formed from a giant, petrified body killed by Hercules. And did you know that the island took its name from Apollo's grandson, Mykonos?
Enjoy the atmosphere along the lively seaside and admire a fleet of fishing boats that emit colorful reflections in blue waters. This is where you will find the Kazárma building, which serves as accommodation for the soldiers of Manto Mavrogenous, a female hero from the Greek Revolution. The first floor serves as his personal residence. When you are walking, don't be surprised if you find the official Mykonos mascot, which is nothing but pelican! Petros the Pelican was discovered by a fisherman after a storm in 1954, and eventually became a companion to the local population. When he died, the sadness of losing him was so deep that a replacement was soon found. In honor of Petros, local residents have built a long tradition of pelicans that roam the waterside as an important part of everyday life. So, whatever you do, don't forget to take a picture with the famous Pelican Petros successor!
One of the most beautiful angles on the island is Alefkántra or Little Venice, an 18th-century district, dominated by luxurious mansions with colorful balconies and stylish windows. With a balcony perched above the sea, photographs of the famous Italian city come to mind. Relax in the seaside café and admire the view of an ancient windmill that stands majestically on the hillside above, with a bright blue background.
Mykonos's second traditional settlement is Áno Merá, located around the historic monastery of Panayia Tourliani (a 16th-century church with brilliant iconostasis of wood carvings). In the north, in Fteliá, lies important Neolithic settlements, and the 14th-13th-century Mycenaean tomb.

MYKONOS ????????THE WHITE CITY ????
According to historical sources and archaeological finds on Mykonos, the ancient city of the island was established in the 11th century B.C. by the Ionians, one of the four major Greek tribes of Ancient Greece. Ionians from Athens and their leader settled in the place that today is called Chora. Mykonos had also close relations with the neighbouring Delos, the religious centre of the antiquity, and it was one of the members of the Delian alliance. During the glorious years of Delos, the island of Mykonos experienced a long period of prosperity, thanks to the economic growth of its neighbour. However, after the disaster of Delos, the island went back to the anonymity.
