Temagami Backcountry: Obabika River Canoe Route
We embarked on a 4 day canoe trip to Temagami's Obabika River Provincial Park in 2011. This trip would take us down the remote and scenic Obabika River. We also visited the Obabika Old Growth Forest and hiked the Wakimika Triangle trails through the worlds largest reaming old growth red and white pine forest. This trip had a challenging drive to get there up an old logging road but it was all part of the journey.

Grizzly Bear Walking Through Forest
The Grizzly bear is a sub-species of the brown bear. These bears are solitary animals, being very powerful, too. Grizzlies are typically brown, even though their fur can appear to be white, as well. They are very fast, despite their impressive size.

Temagami Fire Tower
It didn't take much to convince the boys to stop at the Temagami Fire Tower. And it was worth it! The tower stands 100 feet tall on Caribou Mountain. 400 feet above the town and 1300 feet above sea level. With an impressive 360 degree 25 mile view! The original tower was erected in 1910 which was demolished. This current tower is the third one that was built in 1951 by 7 Forest Rangers. There is also a beautiful lower observation deck with impressive views for those scared of heights. Hiking trails for those feeling ambitious and a Fire Fighter Museum/Visitor Centre are on site as well with bathrooms nearby. Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area.

Backpacking With Our Dirtbag Baby & Dog Deep in the Killarney Park Backcountry E2
#babiescampingtrip #backpackingwithdog #deepinthebackcountry
With our dog injured on this off-grid wild camping trek, we realized that our through hiking - backpacking trip would not be possible. Turning back meant 20km of trail, a tough slog for an injured dog. We were outfitted to stay in the woods for days. My wife came up with a plan. Babies camping trip might not have to be over. I would trail run like I was adventure racing 20 km back to the Toyota 4Runner and get our canoe and canoeing outfit. I would travel ultralight. I would then buy an interior camping permit from the park office. Paddling hard, I would go into the backcountry again, this time by water, portaging through a series of lakes and camping with minimal gear to find my wife Tori who’d be solo wild camping with a baby and dog. With this plan, we could rescue the dog from the backcountry by canoe which would only require him to walk 4 km on the portage trails. If all went well, we would now be on a family canoe trip. We were sad that our dream of hiking Killarneys renown La Cloche Silhouette Trail has come to an end and sadder that our dog Buck was hurt. However, we were happy that we’d found a plan to rescue him that would also see us enjoy a few more days in the woods. Stay tuned for more episodes from this trip.
