Inizio
On an early, cloudy morning, I set off for the Campania region with my fellow Jforcers. I took the Yellow bus with Student Life Assistant (SLA) Mitch and the Padres (Father Al and Father Ted), so with Jesus on board and Ed Sheeran setting the mood, playing in the headphones Natalie and I shared, we were ready to take on the gloomy day.
Our first stop was Paetsum, where the temples of Neptune, Ceres (Athena), and Hera stand erect. Given no warning about the possible weather conditions, I did not wear wear my loveable yellow rainboots to make the trip more bearable. The cover of the museum ceiling was a relief for all. Again, this excursion demonstrated how miserable conditions brings people closer together, whether bonding over complaining or physically closer under the cover of an awning.
Fun facts: the Greeks really liked their pomegranates. Apparently they represent fertility, so they painted them all over the place rather randomly. Also, they liked their honey. Next to the spears in the tomb-offering-things they kept many large jars of honey. It's like a Warrior Winnie the Pooh Bear-Man Cave.
As the sun went down and after a bus-ride nap, we arrived in Vietri on the Amalfi coast where our hotel was located. I was very excited with my room accommodations. Not only was I residing alone, but my room was adorable. Seriously I could move there. Did you see the balcony? The TV also plays fun Italian reality game shows like FORTE, FORTE, FORTE. And my orientation welcome dinner was at a table with Marilyn the business director. So starts my developing friendships with faculty members!
Natalie and I took a post-dinner walk up the hill from the hotel. The neighborhood had a lovely boardwalk leading toward the sea, making it a peaceful end to our night.
After having a full buffet breakfast, we set out for a full day of adventure. To commence our trip, the yellow bus jammed out to Uptown Funk with a Jesuit and a Trinitarian throwing their hands up in the air after each Hallelujah. Our first stop was to a classy wine tasting. The white and the red were both really good, but my favorite item there was the bread with their signature olive oil. I'm not an olive oil fan, but dang that was tasty. However, the flavor could not compare to the amazingness that was buffalo mozzarella. We went to a buffalo farm in which the mozzarella, gelato, yogurt, and everything else was organic and fresh. They also treat their buffalos very, very well. The buffalo get massages and listen to classical music. Because of this high quality, I will never have truly great cheese again. Also, I waited in the long line of eager college students for the gelato. BEST DECISION I MADE ON THE TRIP. I've had quite a few bowls of pistachio gelato in my time, but this by far was the best I have ever had and probably will ever have. Eating it was a spiritual experience. Nothing will compare. NOTHING.
When we pulled up into a parking lot in a dismal corner of town for our Agropoli stop, I didn't have high hopes for our tour. However, after a trek uphill, we came to some of the best sites for views of the coast and Mediterranean. AND THERE WAS A CASTLE. My vanilla tea to warm up with at the local bar (bar is cafe in italian) came with biscuits. Food + warm drink = happy Rachel.
Our busride back to the hotel that night was the most fun I could have had on the road with 50 people. Everyone joined in singing to throwback songs. Even the Padres got in on the action.
My second dinner at the hotel was again accompanied by another faculty member. This time the one, the only, everyone's favorite Dutchman, Professor Sander Evers. He helped me get my vegetarian food, mocked my excessive hand gestures, and told stories of the characters his has met on his travels. Faculty member friend development #2!
Because we were eating, I didn't think of bringing my camera, but I wish I had. Our treat after dessert was a performance by a group of folk musicians and dancers from the Mt. Vesuvius area. Since most of the individuals at dinner had a glass or two of wine during their meal, there was much joining of dancing. Featured was a conga line and an appearance of From the window to the wall.
Our last day out was to the mountain top abbey of St. Benedict. I don't think I have ever actually seen snow capped mountains before, so the landscape view was especially special to me. The building itself is a construction of old and new. The abbey has been destroyed a total of 4 times. Their are remnants of the original from centuries and centuries ago, but the newest parts are only some 60 years old. The Italian governments paid to have it rebuilt after the Americans bombed it in World War II. We thought the Nazis were hiding there. We were wrong. Oops.
And with a sleepy busride back, so ended my weekend orientation trip!
