The British Abroad by Peter Dench

From Peter: Hello! I'm Peter Dench, an award-winning British photojournalist with over 15-years experience. I've had the privilege to travel extensively across the globe on assignment for magazines including The New Yorker; TIME; Sunday Times; Telegraph; Weekend Guardian; GQ and STERN.
Since 2012 I’ve, been documenting the British party phenomenon across some of Europe's best beach destinations: Ibiza, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Majorca and Croatia. My pictures reveal a colourful, wild and uniquely British world, and I’m now looking for funding to turn them into a hardback photo book. This will be a follow up to my book A&E: Alcohol & England, published last year by Bluecoat Press.
THE BRITISH ABROAD: The world of the clubbing holiday is a place of extremes, and one of the greatest is alcohol. Britons regularly top the league of drunken holiday hooligans. And no wonder.
On arrival holidaymakers are met by party promoters selling tickets for everything the Brit abroad has come to expect; foam parties, boat parties, water parties, luminous paint parties and the holiday staple, the organised party bar crawl. Party Hard in Ayia Napa, offer a bar crawl every Tuesday that includes five bars, drinking games, free shots and free club entry. The Party Crew’s, Let’s Go F**king Mental bar crawl in Sunny Beach, is three times a week. Tourists can expect a welcome cocktail, five free shots, a visit to four popular party bars and two free entrances to clubs. The average age of the 110,000 Club 18-30 customers who go abroad every year is 19. Partygoers must be ready to embrace the lows along with the highs.
On the main strip in Ayia Napa, I met 19 year-old Calum, a plumber from Scotland, being jovially pushed along by friends in a wheelchair. Calum slipped on the floor where he was staying and fell through a patio door and off a first floor balcony, severing the tendons in both of his legs.
Not everyone I’ve been photographing is on holiday. In Magaluf, I accompanied 32 year-old Security Officer, George, on the stretch of beach he patrols alone for nine hours, seven days a week, five months a year. During the night, armed with only a baton and five years experience, he had to disperse a rowdy crowd of around 20 youths trying to launch pedalos into the sea. A previous night, a tourist he interrupted being intimate with a young woman, stabbed him in his stab vest.
With the reportage I now have, I’m ready to publish a book that will allow others to step inside this world and see what goes on when the British land on foreign soil.
Bio: Achievements include a World Press Photo Award in the People in the News Stories Category for the reportage, Drinking of England and participation in the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass.
Football’s Hidden Story, a FIFA sponsored project comprising 26 stories across 20 different countries documenting the positive impact that football has had at grass root level on individuals and communities across the planet, received six global accolades.
Exhibitions include: LoveUK, Cardiff, Wales; The British Abroad, Photoreporter festival, France; England Uncensored, Visa pour l’Image festival of photojournalism, France and the Periscopio festival, Spain.
In 2012 I joined the core group of fully represented photographers at Getty Images Reportage.
I've made written contributions to The New Yorker and Telegraph magazine: Hungry Eye, the world’s first photography and film making journal publishes the often laugh-out-loud Dench Diary in each issue.
Solo books published include, A&E: Alcohol & England and England Uncensored, which was a Pictures of the Year International photography book award finalist. In 2013, the United Nations of Photography published the collected Dench Diaries as a limited edition pulp-paperback.
In 2012 I cofounded White Cloth Gallery UK, a photography + film, studio & events space in the heart of Leeds city centre and operated as Co Creative Director until October 2014, sourcing, curating and promoting exhibitions.

The awareness campaign for LNADJ's 'HOUSE the HOUSE' city of Leeds heat kicks off with support from local AND national DJs & artists featuring DANNY RAMPLING, JOEY NEGRO, PLAN B, MC RAGE of CHASE & STATUS, RIZZLE KICKS, SHOVELL THE DRUM WARRIOR (M-PEOPLE) and CREAM residents JOSH DEMELLO & ADAM SHERIDAN.
'HOUSE the HOUSE' is a nationwide DJ competition open to 16 - 25 year olds and all genres of dance music. As well as getting the chance to win some amazing prizes such as a slot at the worlds number one nightclub SPACE IBIZA, a music production scholarship at the world renowned SAE Institute, the heat final winner will get to make HISTORY as the first DJ to ever play a set at the HOUSE OF COMMONS TERRACE BAR alongside an A - list superstar DJ in March 2013.
This is a DJ competition with a difference. House the House encourages positive change within todays youth and their communities by stipulating that all entrants commit to completing 4 hours voluntary work in a local music based community project. Thereby instilling themselves and their communities with a sense of positive change through the power of music.

Bandoliers at the Royal Armouries Tower of London Collection
The best way for me to understand history is to recreate it. Faithfully reproducing these items has revealed how and why such military equipment was turned.
Lupton family
The Lupton family are of Yorkshire origin and first achieved prominence in ecclesiastical and academic circles in England in the 16th century through the fame of Dr Roger Lupton, provost of Eton College and chaplain to Henry VIII. By the Georgian era, the family's fame was cemented in the Northern English city of Leeds. Described in the City of Leeds archives as landed gentry, a political and business dynasty, they had become successful woollen cloth merchants and manufacturers who flourished during the Industrial Revolution and traded throughout northern Europe, the Americas and Australia.
As Members of Parliament – Arnold Lupton – and local politicians, the Lupton family contributed to the political life of both the UK and to the civic life of Leeds well into the 20th century. Several members were close to the British Royal Family and particularly philanthropic. Many were Mayor and later Lord Mayor of Leeds and were progressive in their views. They were associated with both the Church of England and the Unitarian church in England. The Lupton Residences of the University of Leeds are named after members of the family and the world's largest law firm, DLA Piper, was established by solicitor Sir Charles Lupton as Dibb-Lupton.

Our Collection: The Stechzeug
A German/Austrian Stechzeug, an armour created specifically for the Joust of Peace. By the late 15th century jousting had become a highly dangerous and specialised sport. Special armours were created in order to keep the jouster safe. This armour is usually on display in the Tournament Gallery at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. This video was created by History™ for the exhibition Dressed to Kill, which was a joint exhibition between Historic Royal Palaces and the Royal Armouries, in the year of the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's ascension to the English throne.

Behind the Scenes: Henry VIII's Tonlet Armour
A short film that takes a peek behind the scenes of the Royal Armouries museum's curatorial department. This features Henry VIII's tonlet armour, which was rapidly created for the Field of Cloth of Gold tournament with Francis I of France in 1520.
Behind the Scenes: Photography of the Horned Helmet
This video shows the iconic Horned Helmet - known as 'Max' by the museum - being photographed in Leeds. This is the first time it has been taken out of its case for many years. 'Max' was a gift to Henry VIII from the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I.
Object photography is a great opportunity for curators and image librarians to document important details for museum records and public access.
These photographs will be used in several ways, including publicity, record improvements, documentation for research, and to enable the public to see interesting new views that they may not be able to see when it is on display.
Object photography can take days, and a curator - in this case Senior Curator of European Armour Karen Watts - must be present at all times to highlight all the important features and angles, as well as to ensure that the object is treated carefully. It is slow but important work!
Once photography was complete, Max was returned to his usual home in the Tournament Gallery at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, UK.
Royal Armouries @ Tower of London
Bandoliers at the Royal Armouries Tower of London Collection
In this series of videos I examine the bandoliers (aka bandoleers or a collar of charges) in the Tower of London Collection which is now held at Leeds Armories in West Yorkshire in the UK. Since making these videos some years ago, I have been able to examine many other collections. All boxes I have examined have been hollowed and wherever they are in the world they seem remarkably similar in both style and dimensions. A replica I made from the collection you see in these videos was sent to an early settler site in the USA where a well preserved original lid fitted it perfectly.
Requisition sheets show large orders of bandoliers from Europe so it should come as no surprise they are so similar throughout Christendom in the English Civil War and Thirty Years War period.
Examining the boxes closely, I was able to detect the speed of turning and the tools used. So I went about creating a Joseph Moxon seventeenth century lathe and recreated the boxes with period tools and techniques. I now offer them at my shop on so please do come along and have at look at these and other items I love to recreate from originals.
Our Collection: Henry VIII's Armour - Field of Cloth of Gold
This video shows two of Henry VIII's two foot combat armours made for him while he was a young athletic man, for the Field of Cloth of Gold tournament in 1520. They are usually on display in the Royal Armouries in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. This video was created by History™ for the exhibition Dressed to Kill, which was a joint exhibition between Historic Royal Palaces and the Royal Armouries, in the year of the 500th anniversary of his accension to the English throne. It examined the arms and armour of Henry VIII. The exhibition was open at the Tower of London 3 April 2009 - 17 January 2010.

Exhibition: The Chronicles of Froissart
A walk through of the recent exhibition at the Royal Armouries in Leeds about the life and times of French Chronicler John Froissart, who lived at the time of the 100 Years Wars. The exhibition featured one of the few surviving 15th century manuscripts.
