Places to see in ( Capri - Italy ) White Grotta
The Grotta Bianca is located on the island of Capri, Italy. It derives its name from white incrustations of calcareous matter upon its sides, and from clusters of white stalactites which hang from the roof and fringe the entrance. The cave faces east, and is situated near the Punta della Chiavioa. The entry, about 70–80 feet (21–24 m) high, leads into upper and lower caves, of which the former is not easily accessible.
The lower cave can be entered by boat for a short distance. Unlike most other caves at the water-level, it is much broader at approximately 6 feet (1.8 m) above the water than actually at the surface. The total height is no more than 24 feet (7.3 m). The upper erosion line is clearly marked near the cave and within it. The upper cave seems to belong to an earlier period.
According to the book 'The Sicilian' by Mario Puzo, the Grotta Bianca is where Salvatore Giuliano, the famous Sicilian bandit, stayed during his first nights as an outlaw after shooting dead an armed national policeman. Although the book is dramatized, many believe some information with in it is true, with regards to Giuliano.

Capri Boat Tour around whole Capri Island, Italy
If you're wondering what a private boat tour around Capri island is like, here's a video showing just that!
In May 2019, we got a 2 hour Capri boat tour on a gozzo boat with a company called Gianni's Boat tours which we found highly recommended on Tripadvisor & on Google reviews. (Not gifted, Not sponsored). Our tour guide was Juan Paolo (if I remember his name correctly), and you can hear some highlights of his commentary and explanations about the island included in this video.
Sights you will see on this Capri Boat Tour:
- View of whole of Capri island, as seen from Monte San Costanzo, on mainland Italy (in Massa Lubrense on the Sorrentine peninsula). You can see our beautiful hike / walk on Monte San Costanzo on my video here:
- Marina Grande, Capri (on the central North of the island)
- Sailing across from the Capri side to the Anacapri side of the island
- Our tour inside the famous Blue Grotto / Grotta Azzurra, Italia, found on the North West of the island, and which we entered by switching to a small rowboat: You can see a more focused video of our tour in the Blue Grotto here:
- Punta Carena Lighthouse on the South West tip of the island
- The Green Grotto / Grotta Verde / The Green Cave, on the south side of the island
- Punta di Mulo on the south side of the island, with a little religious saint marking there.
- Marina Piccola on the South side of the island, where Juan Paolo pointed out where Fiona Swarovski's holiday / vacation beach house is.
- Fishermen's cover / Fisherman's cove
- i Faraglioni - the famous coastal geological structure - the natural arch on the East side of the island.
- We skipped the White Grotto / Grotta Bianca because the water was getting a little choppy and I was getting a little seasick! so we cut the tour a little bit short.
- Views of Massa Lubrense & the Amalfi Coast as seen from Capri.

Grotta Azzurra, Capri, Italy
The Grotta Azzurra or Blue Grotto, is located in the north west of the Isle of Capri in Italy. The iridescent blue light is caused by the reflection of the sandy white bottom and refraction of light within the grotto. We travelled by motor boat from the harbour, then transferred to a row boat to enter the cave. The boat captains sing to you in the grotto. If the seas are choppy the grotto is closed. Background music is Satin Sugar by Huma Huma.

THE BLUE GROTTO (GROTTA AZZURRA) IN CAPRI, ITALY-Stunning!
The stunning Blue Grotto is perhaps the highlight of a trip to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy. It can only be reached in a rowboat and the opening to the cave is so small, you have to lie flat or risk hitting your head. Once inside, you can see the luminescent blue color that is created when sunlight passes through an underwater cavity that is positioned under the cave's mouth. BEAUTIFUL!

The Blue Grotto is a sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri, southern Italy. Sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern. The cave extends some 50 metres into the cliff at the surface, and is about 150 metres (490 ft) deep, with a sandy bottom.
The cave is 60 metres long and 25 metres wide. The cave mouth is two metres wide and roughly one metre high. For this reason, entrance into the grotto can only be achieved when tides are low and the sea is calm. Without calm seas and low tides, the grotto becomes inaccessible, as the 1-metre entrance is impossible to pass. To enter the grotto, visitors must lie flat on the bottom of a small four-person rowboat. The oarsman then uses a metal chain attached to the cave walls to guide the boat inside the grotto. Swimming in the grotto is forbidden, both for safety reasons and to preserve water clarity.
The Blue Grotto is one of several sea caves, worldwide, that is flooded with a brilliant blue or emerald light. The quality and nature of the colour in each cave is determined by the particular lighting conditions in that particular cave. In the case of the Blue Grotto, the light comes from two sources. One is a small hole in the cave wall, precisely at the waterline, that is a meter and half in diameter. This hole is barely large enough to admit a tiny rowboat, and is used as the entranceway. In photographs taken from within the cave, the above-water half of this hole appears as a spot of brilliant white light. The second source of light is a second hole, with a surface area about ten times as large as the first, which lies directly below the entranceway, separated from it by a bar of rock between one and two meters thick. Much less light, per square meter, is able to enter through the lower opening, but its large size ensures that it is, in practice, the primary source of light.
As light passes through the water into the cave, red reflections are filtered out and only blue light enters the cave. Objects placed in the water of the grotto famously appear silver. This is caused by tiny bubbles, which cover the outside of the object when they are placed underwater. The bubbles cause the light to refract differently than it does from the surrounding water and gives off the silver effect. In part because of the dazzling effect of the light from the above-water opening, it is impossible for a visitor who is in one of the rowboats to identify the shape of the larger hole, the outline of the bar that separates the two holes, or the nature of the light-source, other than a general awareness that the light is coming up from underneath, and that the water in the cave is more light-filled than the air. A visitor who places a hand in the water can see it glow eerily in this light.
During Roman times, the grotto was used as the personal swimming hole of Emperor Tiberius as well as a marine temple. Tiberius moved from the Roman capitol to the island of Capri in 27 AD. During Tiberius' reign, the grotto was decorated with several statues as well as resting areas around the edge of the cave. Three statues of the Roman sea gods Neptune and Triton were recovered from the floor of the grotto in 1964 and are now on display at a museum in Anacapri.
