Incredible footage shows calm before fatal blast on Whakaari White Island
Meanwhile incredible new footage has emerged showing seemingly idyllic conditions as sightseers wandered around the White Island volcano before Monday's fatal eruption.
The video taken buy one of the tourists - Allessandro Kauffman - tracks the first tour group happily hiking to the crater and back, taking in the sights and snapping photos oblivious to the imminent danger.
They were only just back on their White Island tour boat in the bay when Whakaari unleashed.

White Island, New Zealand Volcano Eruption
Various clips of the December 9, 2019 volcano eruption on Whakaari/White Island in New Zealand.
Some of the clips in the beginning of the video are from prior trips to the island before the disastrous day but I felt like it was worth showing for viewers to get an idea of what the island was like for tourists and guides. Included in these clips is a July 2018 clip of the 1st victim that was killed and that New Zealand authorities named.... Hayden Marshall-Inman. In the clip Mr. Marshall-Inman spoke about a time he visited the island in September 2017 where the volcano gave him quite a good scare. Mr. Marshall-Inman was a tour guide for White Island Tours.
Total number of deceased and missing persons is unknown at the time of this upload as there have been differing numbers given by media sources. But there are sure to be more victims made public as the days go on. New Zealand Police have stated that there were No survivors.
White Island - Bay of Plenty, Whakatane, New Zealand
My day trip to a volcanic island off the coast of New Zealand in 2015.
Fly Into an Active Volcano - White Island - New Zealand
Flying into New Zealand’s most active Volcano with Volcanic Air is an awesome adventure that starts from a jetty on the edge of Lake Rotorua. My sister and I started the day with a visit to the Volcanic Air sales office located near Rotarua’s attractive water front to inquire about the tours available. They offer a range of options, some flight only, others a combination of flight, landings and guided walking tours, using their own fleet of helicopters and float planes. We opted for a helicopter tour that included two advertised landings, the first on Mount Tarawera to see the massive tear in the earth’s crust caused by the 1886 eruption, the second on White Island, an active volcano in the Bay of Plenty. The Island looks like the result of an atomic explosion that has created the kind of eerie landscape one might expect to see on some far distant planet.
I could describe the journey in more detail, but choosing the words to do justice to this amazing flight to witness at first-hand nature creating New Zealand’s breath taking landscape is beyond me, so please sit back and join me for a once in a lifetime trip to see natures awesome power at work.
Thank you to the team at Volcanic Air for making this a truly memorable experience.

A huge volcano eruption on White Island in New Zealand sent plumes of ashes and steam into the air. One person has been killed and police say more fatalities are likely.
About 50 tourists were believed to be in the immediate ares of the volcano when it exploded, sending massive plumes of steam and debris into the air. Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, said that some people are unaccounted for, among them foreign tourists.

White Island, New Zealand
50km off the coast of Whakatane, is the volcanic island of Whakaari, or 'White Island'. It's a circular island which climbs a thousand feet into the sky and is 2km across. It's Maori name means 'dramatic volcano', and the island certainly lived up to the moniker during its days as a site for sulphur mining.

At least five tourists have died and more are still missing after a massive volcano eruption on a remote island off New Zealand on Monday.

Fantastic way to see an active volcano. White Island is a 20 min flight across the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The trip there and back is definitely part of the adventure. Thanks to the very professional crew at Frontier Helicopters, Whakatane.
