White Island eruption: Bay of Plenty warned of ashfall
A massive rescue operation is underway following an eruption on White Island in the Bay of Plenty at 2:11pm on Wednesday.
Initially it was believed 100 people were on or around the island at the time, but police now say it was around 50.
At least 20 have been injured, seven of them are believed to be critical. Police are due to hold a press conference.
St John's Director of Operations Norma Lane has confirmed to Checkpoint that some patients are critical and have burns.
Carmen Tressider is the president of the Whakatāne sportsfishing club - which is just down the road from where those injured have been brought ashore.
She told Checkpoint reporter Nita Blake-Persen they're being told of lots of serious injuries.
NZ Civil Defence is warning that people living in or near the area have been warned to beware of ashfall, close all windows and doors and wear a dust mask or handkerchief.
GNS says it appears ash fall is confined to the island at the moment, but there may be a small amount reaching East Cape in the coming hours.

Fly Into an Active Volcano - White Island - New Zealand
Flying into New Zealand’s most active Volcano with Volcanic Air is an awesome adventure that starts from a jetty on the edge of Lake Rotorua. My sister and I started the day with a visit to the Volcanic Air sales office located near Rotarua’s attractive water front to inquire about the tours available. They offer a range of options, some flight only, others a combination of flight, landings and guided walking tours, using their own fleet of helicopters and float planes. We opted for a helicopter tour that included two advertised landings, the first on Mount Tarawera to see the massive tear in the earth’s crust caused by the 1886 eruption, the second on White Island, an active volcano in the Bay of Plenty. The Island looks like the result of an atomic explosion that has created the kind of eerie landscape one might expect to see on some far distant planet.
I could describe the journey in more detail, but choosing the words to do justice to this amazing flight to witness at first-hand nature creating New Zealand’s breath taking landscape is beyond me, so please sit back and join me for a once in a lifetime trip to see natures awesome power at work.

New Zealand volcano erupts on White Island causing fears for missing people | ABC News
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed people are unaccounted for after a volcanic eruption on White Island.
The Whakaari volcano on the island, which is in the Bay of Plenty, erupted mid-afternoon on Monday and the local mayor said several people were injured.
Ms Ardern then confirmed the reports that people were unaccounted for and labelled the incident to be very significant.

White Island Volcano - New Zealand - Bay Of Plenty
8th September 2013 I visited White Island volcano in New Zealand. This is an active explosive volcano, which mainly erupts with lumps of rock rather than lava, due to the presence of water.
The lake in the video is boiling Sulphuric Acid and sulphur gas is in the air making it hard to breathe hence the masks we were issued for protection.
A brilliant place to visit if you are in the area. White Island Tours took me.

New Zealand volcano: Tourists capture moment of eruption on White Island
A huge volcano eruption on White Island in New Zealand sent plumes of ashes and steam into the air. One person has been killed and police say more fatalities are likely.
About 50 tourists were believed to be in the immediate ares of the volcano when it exploded, sending massive plumes of steam and debris into the air. Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, said that some people are unaccounted for, among them foreign tourists.

New Zealand volcano: 24 Australians were on White Island at the time of eruption | 7NEWS
A volcano has erupted on Whakaari, or White Island, in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty. Scott Morrison's office has confirmed there were 24 Australians from the cruise ship Ovation of the Seas on the island at the time of the eruption. It is not known how many of them were rescued, but they believe a number of Australians are unaccounted for.

A massive rescue operation is underway following an eruption on White Island at around 2.11pm Monday, that sent a plume of ash and steam 12,000 feet into the air.
Around 50 are understood to be on or around the island at the time of the explosion.
At least 20 have been injured, seven of them are believed to be critical. As of 5pm, some people also remain unaccounted for.
A mobile triage unit is on its way to the island. It will bring the injured back to shore where they will be transported to Whakatāne Hospital.
Geonet's web cam on the island shows a number of people standing inside the crater just before the eruption.
Commercial fisherman Dan Harvey was out at sea near Pukehina beach and he described to me what he saw.

New Zealand volcano – Tourists dead after huge White Island eruption
At least five tourists have died and more are still missing after a massive volcano eruption on a remote island off New Zealand on Monday.
A 12,000ft plume of smoke and rock blasted from the White Island volcano at around 2:10pm local time - just minutes after visitors were apparently spotted trekking through its crater in a chilling last photo.
