Sky walk around White Nancy Bollington
Videod 17th May 2018.
White Nancy is a structure at the top of the northern extremity of Kerridge Hill, predominantly in the Parish of Rainow, overlooking the village of Kerridge and the town of Bollington, Cheshire, England. Since 1966 it has been recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Its profile forms the logo for the town of Bollington. As to the origin of the name White Nancy, there are several theories: it may have been named after one of the Gaskell daughters, Nancy, or maybe after the horse that is said to have hauled the table-top up the hill. However, much the most likely origin is that the hill once had upon it an Ordnance marker, as installed by mapping surveyors. Early maps noted the location as Northern Nancy.

Bollington is a small town and civil parish in Cheshire, England, to the east of Prestbury. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Earl of Chester's manor of Macclesfield, and the ancient parish of Prestbury.
Bollington, locally nicknamed Happy Valley, is on the River Dean and the Macclesfield Canal, on the south-western edge of the Peak District. Rising above the town is Kerridge Hill that is surmounted by White Nancy, a monument built to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo in the Napoleonic Wars.
Lyme Park is a large estate located south of Disley, Cheshire. The estate is managed by the National Trust and consists of a mansion house surrounded by formal gardens, in a deer park in the Peak District National Park. The house is the largest in Cheshire, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

The Kerridge and White Nancy: Out and About
Separating the hills of the Peak District and the Cheshire Plain is a sandstone ridge called the Kerridge. The ridge runs north-south from Rainow to Bollington, just to the east of Macclesfield. It has been extensively quarried for its Kerridge Stone, which has formed the basis for most of the buildings in Bollington, and many churches in Cheshire.
At its northern end lies the folly of White Nancy, which is nearly 200 years old. It is a famous local landmark, and the symbol of the town of Bollington. It can be seen for miles around.
So come with me on a short walk around and then up to the top of the Kerridge, and find out all about the area.

A tune I wrote to describe a local landmark and folly called 'White Nancy'. If the tempo was upped slightly, it might be suitable for a New England style contra dance.
