About White Pass & Yukon Route:
The first train to operate in Alaska revenue service ran over WP&YR
rails on July 21,1898, at the height of the Klondike gold rush that prompted the
narrow gauge road's construction. At the time, the railway's three foot gauge tracks
extended inland only a few miles from Skagway, Alaska.
Upon completiom in July 1900, with gold fever on the wane, the international route
connected Skagway with Whitehorse in Canada's Yukon Territory via 110 miles of ruggedly
scenic main line along the Coastal mountain range.
For more than 80 years the railway hauled freight and passenger business between
Skagway and Whitehorse and interchanged traffic with a fleet of sternwheeler steamboats
plying the Yukon River and its tributaries.
In World War II, under control of the US Army, it was a vital supply link for construction
of the Alaskan Highway and other strategic infastructure.
In 1955, it became a pioneer in the development of intermodal containerization.
In 1982, the railway was shutdown because of a catastrophic loss of minerals traffic.
In 1988, triggered by the booming Alaskan cruise industry, it reopened as a scenic passenger railway.
It carries more passengers than any other scenic railway in North America.
Today it runs as far north as Carcross (Caribou Crpssing) in the Yukon Territory,
which is located at the north end of Lake Bennett.
The routes era is 1950-1988, covering the full 110 miles from Skagway to Whitehorse.

Skagway, Alaska Cruise Port Guide: White Pass & Yukon Route Railway
The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is a popular attraction for cruise guests visiting Skagway, Alaska. Completed in 1900, the railroad was the primary means of transportation for prospectors travelling over the White Pass to the goldfields in the Yukon.
The “White Pass Summit Excursion” allows guests to ride in vintage-style passenger cars along the same route as gold prospectors of the past while seeing spectacular views, gold rush points of interest, and more. The narrated tour takes about two-and-a-half hours as the train travels forty miles round-trip to the White Pass summit at 2,888 feet in elevation.

White Pass & Yukon Railway-Skagway, Alaska
All aboard!!! Take the train and see the spectacular scenery of Alaska as we ride the White Pass & Yukon Railway in Skagway, Alaska.
Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, a designation shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.
The $10 million project was the product of British financing, American engineering and Canadian contracting. Tens of thousands of men and 450 tons of explosives overcame harsh and challenging climate and geography to create the railway built of gold.
The WP&YR climbs almost 3000 feet in just 20 miles and features steep grades of up to 3.9%, cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, two tunnels and numerous bridges and trestles. The steel cantilever bridge was the tallest of its kind in the world when it was constructed in 1901.
The 110 mile WP&YR Railroad was completed with the driving of the golden spike on July 29, 1900 in Carcross Yukon connecting the deep water port of Skagway Alaska to Whitehorse Yukon and beyond to northwest Canada and interior Alaska.
Today, the WP&YR is Alaska's most popular shore excursion carrying over 390,000 passengers during the 2012 May to September tourism season operating on the first 67.5 miles (Skagway, Alaska to Carcross, Yukon) of the original 110 mile line. (Source: wpyr.com)

White Pass & Yukon Route - Boerries Burkhardt - Steam 73 in Sept. 2014
Running down from White Pass summit to Skagway with steam engine Baldwin 73 of the White Pass & Yukon Route with my two White Pass friends Jim Hamilton and Matt Taylor. Matt became a steam engineer this year. Only a few are qualified by White Pass to run the steam engines. This was also the last steam train of the 2014 season. Lucky that I was there, and thanks to ride in the cab. For me it was the first time ever been on a steam engine inside the cab. Enjoy the scenery and the wonderful Scenic Railroad of the World.
