LITC- Crowders Mountain State Park- Back Stage Pass to the Great Outdoors
In this Backstage Pass to the Great Outdoors segment, we travel with Carl to Crowders Mountain State Park in Gaston County NC, the perfect destination for nature lovers who enjoy hiking, canoeing, camping, expansive vistas of natural wonder, and rock climbing.
The park's visitors center features a wonderful spread of animal exhibits that are both entertaining as well as educational. Maps and other information are also available at the center.
Carl interviews Ranger Kelly Cooke, who is a powerhouse of information about how to best prepare for a rich, safe trip to the park. Among his many tips are these:
• Take lots of water: 16 ounces per hour per person, including pets.
• Keep small children close to you.
• Do not get too near the edge of the cliffs.
• Wear closed-toed shoes.
Dogs and many other pets are welcome, provided they are restrained on leash of six feet or shorter. Pack animals are not permitted.
Experienced rock climbers will enjoy climbing at the Main Wall and the Hidden Wall. There is no fee, but permits are required.
There are over twenty miles of hiking trails at the park, ranging from easy to strenuous. The panoramic views from the top are stunning, and well worth the hike. Camping and canoeing is also available for minimal fees.
Crowders Mountain State Park is a fun destination for all members of the family.
