Exploring White Sands, New Mexico
White Sands, New Mexico - Home to seemingly endless giant sand dunes out in the middle of nowhere. This place is worth a short stop or even full a weekend stay. Don't forget the bring your plastic saucer sleds for some dune sledding fun. Also, it's impossible to take a bad picture here as every angle has something beautiful to see. My next stop here, I want to watch the sunset! I'm sure the colors reflecting off the white sand would be incredible.

WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT - New Mexico USA
White Sands National Monument is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles (710 km²) of desert, the monument is situated at an elevation of 4,235 feet (1,291 m) in the mountain-ringed Tularosa Basin, creating the world's largest gypsum dunefield.
White Sands National Monument is a United States national monument located in the state of New Mexico on Route 70 approximately 54 miles (87 km) northeast of Las Cruces and 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Alamogordo in western Otero County.
It’s a great place to explore and for pictures, but it is a desert so bring water. And BRING SUNGLASSES! The sand is essentially as white as snow, and so the sun reflects off of everything and makes it almost unbearably bright. A good pair of sunglasses is crucial to enjoying your time and not getting a headache from squinting and light exposure.
The visitor center and a nearby comfort station, three ranger residences, as well as three maintenance buildings were constructed of adobe bricks as a Works Progress Administration project starting in 1936 and completed in 1938. The original eight adobe buildings and other nearby structures were designated the White Sands National Monument Historic District when they were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
Driving from White Sands National Monument to Alamogordo, New Mexico
Driving from White Sands National Monument which has to Alamogordo New Mexico with an Ion Action Camera mounted on nose cone of my Toyota Prius with a suction cup mount :) It was a very clear and bright day. I am glad the camera remained attached during the video capture process. The gift store has the slides to play on the gypsum dunes. Because of the really white and bright sands, it is strongly suggested to use sunglasses to avoid major disturbance from sunlight.

Driving White Sands National Monument, Alamogordo, NM
Driving through White Sands National Monument to the Alkali Flat trailhead. White Sands National Monument is on the White Sands Missile Range, just south of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Driving on the hard pack gypsum sand was like driving on salt. Driving between the dunes was like driving through a deep snow drift in Lake Tahoe. The next day, we drove through Carizozo to the Trinity Site.

Alamogordo, New Mexico
Alamogordo is the county seat and economic center of Otero County in south-central New Mexico, United States. A city in the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan desert, it is bordered on the east by the Sacramento Mountains and to the west by White Sands National Monument. It is the city nearest to Holloman Air Force Base. The population was 30,403 as of the 2010 census. Alamogordo is known for its connection with the Trinity test, the first explosion of an atomic bomb, and also for the Atari video game burial of 1983.
Humans have lived in the Alamogordo area for at least 11,000 years. The present settlement, established in 1898 to support the construction of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, is an early example of a planned community. The city was incorporated in 1912. Tourism became an important economic factor with the creation of White Sands National Monument in 1934. During the 1950-60s, Alamogordo was an unofficial center for research on pilot safety and the developing United States' space program.

White Sands National Monument - Leasburg Dam State Park - New Mexico State Park
White Sands National Monument - Leasburg Dam State Park - New Mexico State Park
In the summer, the Two Tired Teachers visited White Sands National Monument while they stayed at Leasburg Dam State Park.
White Sands National Monument is about an hour away from Las Cruces, New Mexico and Leasburg Dam State Park. Alamogordo is the closest city to White Sands.
As its name says, White Sands National Monument is made up of 275 miles white sand. The sand is actually gypsum crystals. It is the world's largest gypsum dunefield.
At White Sands, you can slide down the dunes. If you don't have a disc or something on which to slide, they are sold at the park store.
Hiking, biking, and even horseback riding are other things to do. You will need a special permit to horseback ride. You will need to bring your own horses as none are rented in the park. The riding is limited to certain places in the park.
One of the coolest things the Two Tired Teachers did during their visit to White Sands National Monument was take the Dunes Drive. It's an 8 mile scenic drive that goes through the dunes. It's a 16 mile round trip drive.
What makes it so cool is after the first five miles, the last three are driven on a hard packed gypsum. Yes! You are driving on the sand! Two Tired Teachers recommends driving very slowly as the road is really rough.
Be aware: From time to time, missile testing is done. This will close the freeways in the area and may close parts of the White Sands National Monument.
Since White Sands is in an active missile range, the National Park Service offers the following warning. From time to time, debris from missile tests falls into the monument and is buried by sand. If you see any strange objects, do not touch them as they may still be able to detonate. Make a note of their location and tell a ranger so that appropriate personnel may remove the object in question.
As shown in the video, Leasburg Dam State Park is a beautiful park that we had no chance to truly explore. While the Two Tired Teachers were there, the park was having problems with the electricity. The one night we stayed, we were okay with open windows and fans, but we could see that the following day promised to be really hot and we would need AC.
Despite problems with electricity, we loved our visit to Leasburg Dam State Park and White Sands National Monument.
