The Swan Hotel was never an ordinary alehouse. Kimpton’s Guide to Arundel of 1903 referred to The Swan as ‘Providing good accommodation for travellers and cyclists’. The guide also praised its ‘Wines and spirits of superior quality’ and its catering for ‘Beanfeasts and other parties’. Along with serving Fuller’s award-winning cask ales, these are traditions that The Swan Hotel is proud to continue to this day.

A brief history of the hotel…
For your amusement and appreciation, we have included a little about the history of the hotel and the beautiful, enchanting town of Arundel.
The Swan dates back to 1759, when it was built facing the bustling Arundel Town Quay. Originally there was a courtyard at the rear with stabling for horses and coaches, otherwise this fine Georgian building looks much the same as it did at the end of the 18th century. The old inn sign from that time is displayed in the hotel’s restaurant.
Before 1900 Arundel was a thriving seaport. It was originally registered as a port in 1071.By the mid-19th century the river Arun was linked by canals to London and Portsmouth.
Wharves along the Arun once bristled with the masts of ships and barges carrying coal, timber, chalk and salt. However, trade declined with the growth of Littlehampton harbour. Eventually, when a railway bridge was built across the river at Ford in 1938, tall ships could no longer reach the port.
Nevertheless, fresh local fish remains popular and is always to be found on the menu of The Swan Hotel. The Arun itself is famous for its mullet. Curiously, babies born in Arundel qualify to be called ‘Mullets’. The name is carried with pride – a register of ‘Mullets’ is kept in the town library.
At one time, to satisfy its thirsty seafarers, shipwrights and stevedores, the small town of Arundel boasted two breweries and no less than 30 public houses. In those days beer was safer to drink than the so-called drinking water. Rural Sussex did not receive piped water until the late 19th century, and some parts of Arundel not until the mid-20th century.

The RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line – known as Cunard-White Star Line when the vessel entered service. She was the flagship of the Cunard and White Star Lines, built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland, Queen Mary, along with RMS Queen Elizabeth, were built as part of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. The two ships were a British response to the express superliners built by German, Italian and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Queen Mary was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth.
Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and won the Blue Riband that August;[4] she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States. With the outbreak of the Second World War, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Allied soldiers during the war.
Following the war, Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and, though still among the most popular transatlantic liners, was operating at a loss.
After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. Much of the machinery, including one of the two engine rooms, three of the four propellers, and all of the boilers, were removed. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum and a hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted the Queen Mary as part of the Historic Hotels of America
MS Saga Ruby was a cruise ship that was last operated by Saga Cruises. She was built as the combined ocean liner/cruise ship Vistafjord in 1973 by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders in the United Kingdom[5] for the Norwegian America Line. In 1983 she was sold to Cunard Line, retaining her original name until 1999 when she was renamed Caronia. In 2004 she was sold to Saga and sailed as Saga Ruby until sold in 2014 for use as a floating hotel and renamed Oasia. This never came to fruition. Her owners went bankrupt, and in April 2017 she arrived at Alang for scrapping

As close to being there, without being there.
Join us for this virtual walk from Hampton Court Village to Hampton Court Palace - a royal palace in the borough of Richmond Upon Thames, and former home to King Henry VIII
It is currently owned by Queen Elizabeth II and the Crown and is one of the best known Royal Palaces and houses.
We start our slow tv 4K walk through Hampton Court Village at the corner of Bridge Road and Creek Road. We pass a collection of independent shops, boutiques, cafes and coffee shops before arriving at the River Thames.
Hampton Court Bridge stands just a few yards away (as does Hampton Court Railway Station.) We cross over the bridge, with a great view to the left of the North East bank of the Thames, with Hampton Court Green in the distance, and moored boats and the inviting conservatory of the Riverside Restaurant perched on the waterfront.
On the other side of the bridge, we pass The Mitre Hotel and The Mute Swan pub before crossing the road and entering the gates to the Hampton Court Palace grounds.
We walk up to take a view of the impressive entrance to the Palace building itself. The Palace underwent two distinct periods of building, and so is a mixture of Tudor and Baroque. The grounds of the Palace are free to enter, but if you want to visit the Palace itself, it costs £21.30 for adults, £10.70 for children.
We continue and explore the Rose Garden and Kitchen Garden, before wandering into the less formal area called The Wilderness (which also houses the famous Hampton Court Palace Maze.)
It's here amongst the meadow flowers, blossoming trees and birdsong, that we finish our walk.
