TOP 3 TEMPLES IN CHIANG RAI - Thailand White Temple & More!
Here are the Top 3 Temples in Chiang Rai you must see while visiting! Seeing the famous Thailand White Temple was a bucket list item as it’s regarded as one of the best temples in Thailand. But, there is more to Chiang Rai than just the White Temple. Find out which temples you need to visit by watching our Top 3 picks!
After visiting dozens of traditional Thai temples throughout our travels, we decided to visit the unique and unconventional temples during our trip to Chiang Rai. Our first stop, bright and early, was to the famous Thailand White Temple, also known as Wat Rong Khun. It is an absolute necessity to arrive at the Chiang Rai White Temple early, 8am to be exact, to avoid the massive amounts of crowds that surround the temple around early afternoon. The White Temple is owned by a popular artist from Chiang Rai Thailand who has grown to be one of the most influential artists in the country. Although the Wat Rong Khun is not traditional, it is one of the most unique Thailand temples in existence. The Chiang Rai White Temple is open from 8am-6pm and costs 50 Baht to enter.
Our second stop of the day was the Chiang Rai Blue Temple, also known as Wat Rong Seur Ten. We put this on our list of top 3 temples in Chiang Rai because of the sheer artistry that went into creating this temple. In fact, the Blue Temple in Chiang Rai was created by an artist who was a student of the creator of the White Temple. For that reason, you will see similar styles of art between the two temples. The most impressive aspect of the Blue Temple was easily the inside. Unlike the White Temple, you can film and take pictures inside of the Blue Temple. Wow, were we happy about that! The inside of Wat Rong Seur Ten is something out of a Michelangelo painting, it’s that amazing. The entire inside, along with every inch of wall and ceiling is completely covered in amazing mural art and religious design. It’s a sight to behold. The Chiang Rai Blue Temple is open from 8am-8pm and has a free admission.
Lastly, we visited the Chiang Rai Black House, which isn’t a temple per say but rather a museum. Many people also call this the “Black Temple” because most of it’s buildings are designed in a Thai temple style. The Black House is the lifetime collection of yet another famous Thai artist which he leaves on display for tourists traveling through Chiang Rai. The Black House grounds actually consist of 40 buildings on a vast landscape, so crowds aren’t really an issue unlike the other two temples. The Black House has the most expensive admission at 80 Baht per person, and is open from 9am-5pm.
If you have any questions about the top 3 temples in Chiang Rai please leave a comment down below and we will respond as soon as possible. We highly recommend seeing all three locations including the Thailand White Temple, Blue Temple, Black House and it’s grounds. We hope you enjoyed our latest Chiang Rai Thailand travel vlog. BEAUTIFUL AND WEIRD WHITE TEMPLE - Chiang Rai, Thailand
BEAUTIFUL AND WEIRD WHITE TEMPLE - Chiang Rai, Thailand
OUR LAST DAY IN THAILAND! We woke up in Chiang Rai with one goal in mind... visit the beautiful White Temple, Wat Rong Khun. Unfortunately, we got a bit of a late start to the day and arrived around 11 AM... the same time as every tour bus and we were swamped with people. Regardless, this temple was still breathtaking with it's unique architecture and art... but the inside paintings were probably some of the weirdest art and last things we would expect to see inside a Buddhist temple.

The Architectural Wonders of Thailand’s White Temple
There are 33,000 traditional temples in Thailand. But with its majestic, otherworldly exterior, Wat Rong Khun is unlike any other site of worship. From the ghoulish heads that hang from surrounding trees, to the hands that reach for you as you cross the bridge to the main temple, every part of this site is unique. While Wat Rong Khun attracts thousands of tourists from around the world, it received negative attention when it first opened because critics said it wasn’t traditional Thai art. Yet the temple continues to stand defiantly as a symbol of Thai art for a modern world.

WHITE TEMPLE AKA Wat Rong Khun // Chiang Rai, Thailand // Travel Vlog
Chiang Rai, Thailand is a quieter city, but it's home to one of the most eccentric Buddhist temples in I've ever been to: Wat Rong Khun. Known by farang tourists as the White Temple, this complex was designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, a former billboard painter who is interested intertwining Buddhist iconography with pop culture. He also designed Chiang Rai's Golden Clock Tour.

Wat Rong Khun Thailand - amazing 4k video uhd DJI Osmo+ FZ2000

Transcript (of the tour):
Hi guys and welcome to Native Explorer, the YouTube channel that will show how to travel global but local. Today we are in Chaingrai, Thailand. We are visiting Wat Rong Khun, also known by foreigners as the White Temple.
I am going to take you on a tour in the temple, and then we're going to conduct an interview with the artist who built. Let's start!
This temple is artistically different than other temples in Thailand. It was built by a local famous artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat, who wanted to show the glory of modern Thai Buddahist Art. Together with 60 of his disciples, it took him 18 years to build this edifice.
Why is the Tempe white and not gold like the rest of the temples in Thailand? According to the artist gold represents lust and greediness, as opposed to white, which represents utter purity.
In accordance with Buddhist tradition, the temple was built as if you are going on a spiritual journey. At the entrance of the temple you will encounter scary demons drowning in a pool. As you walk over the side, one is supposed to rid and leave behind his inner demons, evil deeds, and bad Karma.
This is the entrance to the Temple. As you walk into the Temple, you have this bell. You're supposed to ring it, and the sound should help you exorcise the inner demons inside you.
Behind me is the pool of the evil demons. You can see them drowning in Agony.
Over there is the bridge that lets you cross over to the other side. As you walk over the bridge you are supposed to rid yourself of all of your bad Karma, your evil deeds, your inner demons. When you reach the other side, you're supposed to be pure, and ready to meet Buddha.
That's it! We have reached the other side! Do you feel pure?
Behind me is the actual Temple. Inside there is a big status of Buddha, where people go, pray, ask for whatever they want to ask for.
We are not going to take pictures because no photos allowed. So I am just going to leave it up to you when you come and visit to go inside and admire the inner parts of the Temple.
So we finished the trip. We feel enlightened! we feel pure!
We feel cleansed!
But there is one question remanning, that is hovering above us.
The name of the temple in Thai is WAT -- RONG -- KHUN.
Wat means temple. Rong Means Waterway. and Khun means Opaque. So wait!
Why would they call it the White Temple if in Thai the name is the Temple of Opaque Waterway?
Weird, no?
In the 18th century there used to be an agricultural village. In order to irrigate all of fields around the village, there used to be waterway, or a canal, and apparently the water there used to be very opaque, very unclear.
Next to this waterway there used to be a temple, just around here, where this temple is, which was used to call Wat Rong Khun - The Temple of the Opaque Waterway.
And this is how it got the name. However, the temple was destroyed, and it was only rebuilt about 20 years ago, when the artist decided to rebuilt it. And this is the result.
So that's it! Mystery solved!

5 Things to Do in Chiang Rai, Thailand
TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ►
MY FILM MAKING KIT ►
In this episode we take you to northern Thailand to the city of Chiang Rai. We start off by visiting one of the most famous temples in all of Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew also known at the Bamboo Forest Temple. The emerald Buddha was housed here in the 12th century before moving around South East Asia and finally making its way home to the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
Next up we visit Wat Rong Khun aka the White Temple! It is located 13 km’s south of Chiang Rai and it's a must visit. It is owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed, constructed, and opened it to visitors in 1997. It is open all year round and admission is free.
At night you must visit Chiang Rai's night bazaar. Here you can buy dvd's, clothing and goods from the local hill tribes. It's the perfect place to have dinner, and we recommend skipping the restaurant and eating at the food court. If you’re the adventurous type, try some crickets and worms like we did!
The next location we visit is the hill tribe villages about 25 minutes drive north of Chiang Rai. Here you will visit five different hill tribes, the most famous tribe is the Karen long-neck hill tribe. You will hear music, dance and interact with the tribes. You can also buy souvenirs for friends and family back home.
And lastly we visit the Saturday Night Walking Street. It's a night bazaar that is way bigger then the night bazaar and has over a hundred different foods stalls. I recommend coming early and seeing all the food before making a final decision on what to eat. The food was out of this world and I recommend you try northern Thailand's most popular dish Khao Soi. It's a mild coconut based curry served over soft egg noodles and topped and topped with crisp egg noodles. Its delicious!
So that was David's list of 5 things to do in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand.
Thank you for watching! Please subscribe and leave us a comment below on other things to do in Chiang Rai.

Wat Rong Khun (the 'White Temple,') Chiang Rai, Thailand
Wat Rong Khun is a modern and very unusual Buddhist temple in the northern Thai town of Chiang Rai. The temple was designed by artist and architect Chalermchai Kositpipat in the 1990s. Four days before my visit, the temple was damaged by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. Repairs were underway, but visitors were not allowed inside the building.
CHIANG RAI IN 1 DAY
We did everything in Chiang Rai in one day! If you're planning on doing a Chiang Rai day trip, this is the video you need to watch! We went to the white temple, blue temple, and black house! This has to have been the most BEAUTIFUL set of temples we have ever laid eyes on! We did a Chiang Rai Temple Tour and visited the white temple, blue temple, and the black house and could not have had a better day. The white temple was something out of a storybook! When we pulled up to it and the blue temple (later in the day), they almost looked fake from how detailed and grandiose they were. My mind is still blown!
As always thank you so much for watching!

About Us!
If you had told me a year ago that we were going to sell all of our stuff to start backpacking the world, I would have called you a liar. Decisions like the one we made start with an inflection point. A point where you realize that life can never be the same anymore. After a challenging, and painful year in 2017, we decided we needed to go out and live the life we wanted to live, instead of watching it on someone else’s YouTube Channel. We had given everything we had, physically and emotionally, for other’s dreams and were ready to work that hard for ourselves. From rock bottom, Chase for Adventure was born.
The Chase Begins
We moved in with our parents, sold everything we own including our cars, and paid off $70,000 worth of debt. We worked 70hrs/week over the last year trying to save up $15,000 to make our dreams come true. Now, we are travel journalists who showcase the beauty in different cultures and inspire others to chase their dreams through our YouTube Channel and website Chase for Adventure. We want to show others that if they want something bad enough, they’ll figure out how to get it; show people who are struggling that they can make the light at the end of their tunnel. Chase for Adventure is more than just a travel vlog and blog; it’s the chronicles of what it’s like to have a dream and do whatever it takes to attain it.
