Loaf Mountain - Castle Wildland Provincial Park (Alberta, Canada)
2017-08-05 - Loaf Mt. is in the East Castle area of Castle Wildland Provincial Park just north of Waterton Lakes National Park. There is an ATV trail that goes for some distance and then a good foot trail that then leads to Bovin Lake (aka Blue Lake). Another trail near the lake goes up to a big saddle that connects Drywood and Loaf Mt. (and to Spionkip Ridge to the north and Pincher Ridge and Victoria Ridge to the south).

Drop Camp in the Wilmore Wilderness, Alberta, Canada
Harvey and Glen are doing a Drop Camp for a guest and this is where they set up camp along the trail while Greg (the guest) is out at his own camp looking for mountain sheep. They had great weather for camping, too warm to see any sheep though, they were taking refuge from the sun in the shade of the trees still.

A drive to the majestic Kakwa Falls.
A fantastic off-roading trip to the Kakwa Falls, 168 kms SW of Grande Prairie, AB. It takes about 3 hrs to drive the last 30 odd kms. You have to cross numerous streams, climb banks, extremely uneven surface and drive on streams itself. Make sure you have strong legs and a very sturdy 4x4 off-road vehicle.

Day 2 was another crazy day. I started by day hiking as far as I could up the main Whitehorse Wildlands Provincial Park trail to Whitehorse falls. I encountered an unexpected crossing and I hadn't brought my crocs so I had to straddle a tree to keep my shoes dry. After that I reached the lower falls but only saw a party area. Not sure if that was Whitehorse Falls Campground or not since there was no green throne or bear hang. Pushing further on I had another difficult rock hop only to find the trail was flooded so I never reached the upper falls. At least on the way up there I found Harlequin patrol cabin.
Upon my return I set out up the pass. Nasty ripped up muddy trail and I got hit with 2 thunderstorms at the pass that threw out a lot of sleet. Also had to negotiate some snow on the Jasper National Park side. Made it through though.
I also tried in vain, twice, to find a cabin that was up there with minimal knowledge. Turns out it was like 2.5 kms off the trail. I had no idea. I found a waterfall though that few people ever see so that was cool. Overall a fun entertaining day.
This trail on the Whitehorse Wilderness side is basically only described online. It's also in Don Beers book Jasper-Robson: a taste of heaven. But that could be a difficult book to get your hands on since he self publishes. On the Jasper National Park side it is described in the Canadian Rockies Trail Guide as Fiddle River. Trail 126 page 250 in the 9th edition. One campground in the guide is incorrectly labelled Fiddle Campground at kms 20.7. That's actually Whitehorse Campground. The real Fiddle Campground is on the Whitehorse Wildlands side of the pass.

WildHorse Campground2 (Alberta, Canada)
Video of WildHorse campground on Monday August 5, 2013. Nice little remote group site in western Alberta, Canada. This is part 2 of 2. The only area missing off these videos is the site at the far back of the campground which can hold another group of tents.
GPS coordinates to plug into Google maps: 51.656954,-115.352598
Wood was provided at the site, but that's about it. The outhouse was a little run down and the camp kitchen was in okay shape. Coin showers were about a 5 minute drive down the road at another place.
This upload was originally intended to be used a proof of the great condition we left the campground in after the Furthest North 2013 convention ( But I thought for people possibly wanting to see this site - I might as well open it to public viewing.
Part 1 is located here:
