Whitewater Wilderness Preserve. Half way between Palm Springs and Cabazon California. 10 freeway.
Hi Everybody, As part of our 4 day Thanksgiving weekend we went to the Whitewater Wilderness Preserve. It is half way between Palm Springs and Cabazon California just off the 10 freeway. Very interesting place with year round water coming down from the San Gorgonio Mountains and the California aqueduct from the Colorado River. Nature is awesome in it's wonder, Billisa

Whitewater Preserve is 2,851 acres surrounded by the Bureau of Land Management San Gorgonio Wilderness and is part of the Conservancy’s 33,000-acre Sand to Snow Preserve System. It includes 1,280 acres subdivided into 40-acre parcels that were being aggressively marketed at the time of the Conservancy’s purchase. The subdivision’s road system has been removed and restored to preserve the integrity of the wilderness. The Preserve also includes the 291-acre former Whitewater Trout Farm that was purchased at a substantial discount through a partnership with Friends of the Desert Mountains and the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy. These scenic 291 acres lie at the end of Whitewater Canyon Road, north of Palm Springs off Interstate 10, and are an important portal into the San Gorgonio Wilderness and preserve lands.

American River Whitewater River Hike
My wife and I taking a trip along The American River. watch the whole thing we go some amazing footage. American River (North Fork)
The North Fork of the American River is noted for its outstanding scenery, remote recreation, outstanding water quality and historic gold mining values. Gorge scrambling is the most popular activity, followed by hiking, fishing and boating. The upper 26 miles of this 38-mile wild reach are managed by the Tahoe National Forest, while the Bureau of Land Management manages the lower third.
Hikers and fishing enthusiasts can choose from a number of trails to access the river canyon, most of them dropping steeply from the canyon rim down to the water. While visitation peaks in the summer, primarily driven by hikers/swimmers, late spring into mid-summer is typically the height of the boating season. The highest boatable reach is known as Generation Gap (12 miles), run by only the most experienced Class V boaters, which can only be accessed by a three-mile long walk. The next lower reach, known as Giant Gap (14 miles), is also Class V and is accessed by a two-mile hike down the Euchre Bar Trail. Although overnight camping permits are not required, if visitors want a campfire, they will need to obtain a fire permit.
Whitewater, CA--Sept 14, 2016
Whitewater Preserve, California (near Banning) has a lot of nostalgic old memories for thousands of families with kids now grown. Choice memories of trout fishing when their kids were small and thought they were champion fishermen. Years later they learned about trout farms and dad paying by the pound for their fabulous trophy fish! Wonderful memories.
This video shows what the old trout farm looks like now after beautiful renovations of what's now called Whitewater Preserve. I was impressed! Please enjoy a little nostalgia, and maybe take your grand kids there sometime, even though the fishing is not allowed at present.

PCT TRAINING HIKE 1-13-19 WHITEWATER PRESERVE 10 miles
In this video, Robotinthewild and I drove out from San Diego to the Whitewater Preserve to do a training day hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. We did the 1/2 mile trail from the preserve to mile marker 218 of the PCT an headed north. We decide to hike to mile marker 222.8 so just under 5 miles then hiked back.
It was a beautiful day in between to good size storms we had roll in SoCal. The weather and clouds rolled in towards the end of our hike, but it made the skies that much more beautiful.
I hope you enjoy!

Sand to Snow National Monument
The Sand to Snow National Monument encompasses 154,000 acres, including more than 100,000 acres of already congressionally-designated Wilderness. The protected area preserves a tract of land between Joshua Tree National Park and the San Bernardino National Forest. The preserve extends from the Sonoran Desert floor to the summit of Mount San Gorgonio, Southern California's tallest alpine peak. “Sand to Snow National Monument is an ecological and cultural treasure and one of the most biodiverse areas in southern California, supporting more than 240 species of birds and twelve threatened and endangered wildlife species.” (White House Press Release)
Mule deer, mountain lions and black bears are among the larger mammals that roam this region. The headwaters of the Santa Ana and Whitewater Rivers and 30 miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail are also located within the monument. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant, including more than 100 miles of hiking trails, hunting opportunities, camping, horseback riding, photography, skiing and wildlife viewing. Some highlights include the beautiful Whitewater Canyon which is an important wildlife corridor connecting the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains. Big Morongo Canyon is also included and has been designated a Preserve and Area of Critical Environmental Concern by the Bureau of Land Management. The rugged area of untamed terrain features incredible biodiversity and is one of the places where the Mojave Desert and Colorado Desert meet. More information at:
