This guide covers the section from Barnard Castle to Whorlton. We've only focused on the main rapids, if you can cope with these then you'll manage the sections in between.
Each section has been shot at low and high waters to give you an idea of the rapids. The video in annotated with the rapid name, grade and river level of the current video you are watching. We have also noted any other hazards to be aware of.

This video is from a recent Club Trip from Barnard Castle to Winston on the River Tees. We missed the high water of the weekend unfortunately, but at 0.66m on the Barnard Castle gauge it was still a fun level.
This was John’s first time back on whitewater after a number of years and his first time on a Northern River.

Dufton to Langdon Beck Walk
Each year there is a week of walks to raise money for seafarers on the River Tees. The first walk in 2010 was from Dufton to Langdale Beck on May 16th with 17 participants and £150 raised. The countryside was very picturesque all along the 12.5 miles of the walk.
Egglestone Abbey Walk
A Tiffin Trotter, 12 mile circular walk, starting at Barnard Castle and ending back in Barnard Castle for tea, Tiffin and cider! Walking along the River Tees and passing Egglestone Abbey, before walking up to Whorlton and crossing the bridge on the way back. My wife and I stopped to place flowers at the final resting place of my father in law, opposite the Abbey. This video is dedicated to the memory of John Bird, who organised our walks for many years, until his sad passing. A keen walker, good friend and sadly missed, good fellow - this was one of the last walks John did with us.

Final Whitewater Trip of 2018 - River Tees
This is our final trip of 2018, would have been great to have some more water but the weather was nice if a little windy. It is always good to get out on the water with your mates.
A group of us paddles from The Sills in Barnard Castle down through Abbey Rapids to Whorlton Lido. Bumping into East Yorkshire Canoe Club along the way.
Had a swim from one of our younger paddlers, but smiles all round.

Egglestone Abbey & River Tees, North Pennines - 30 January 2017
A 9 mile walk along the banks of the River Tees. Starting at Egglestone Abbey, the route initially heads east towards The Meeting of the Waters where the River Greta joins the Tees. Continuing east the route crosses the River Tees over Whorlton Suspension Bridge. From here the route then heads west along the north bank of the Tees back to Barnard Castle. Crossing the Tees again at Barnard Castle the route then returns to Egglestone Abbey.
