Whorlton Castle near Swainby
This is actually only the castle gatehouse - which survived being ransacked for stone to build houses in nearby Swainby because it was used as a 'Henhouse' by an adjoining farm!
A few years ago it was put on the buildings at risk register and the owner suggested sympathetically including it in a 'Grand Designs' style house.
Nothing seems to have happened, it was suggested the cost would be near £2m.
The main claim to fame of Whorlton is that when William the Conqueror 'Harried the North' between 1068 and 1070, this is where he stayed.
Not in the gatehouse presumably, in fact this structure was probably built about 300 years later but the cellars below are older and probably formed part of the original castle.
It is remarkable that there is no security, you can just go in and look around.
DJI Phantom Vision Plus
Whorlton Castle and Swainby from the air. Aug 07 2009.
Comparative shots using a better camera and more powerful motor. Same plane - seems OK with the heavier camera. Very light wind made it easier to film from all angles. Swainby village a bit distant but all covered. (I noticed a football field (?Playground?) near the road junction to Whorlton. A flight from there would give a really good coverage of the village from the air. The village setting deserves a good quality video to let others appreciate its charm. An aerial shot would do the caravan site's publicity no harm as well!)

Whorlton Castle
Many groups have been to Whorlton castle with a mixed bag of techniques and results, usually depending upon how serious they were in their investigation. One of the main sightings at the Castle is said to be a lady in grey or white
This visit was by both Chris & Mark and took place on 21st May 2013. This is the SB-7 Sessions with possible audio captures.

Whorlton Castle 2017 - Mavic Pro
The principal remains are a gatehouse, which was rebuilt in the 1500s. It only survived stone robbing as it was used as an (awkward!) farm barn.
To the rear a substantial arched structure fascinates ghosthunters who think it was a dungeon, but is probably the undercroft storage area of a considerably older keep.
The castle was used as a base in Norman Times for the 'Harrying of the North' when almost everything was killed, burned and laid waste. If that weren't enough sad history, the village of Whorlton was later decimated by the Black Death and subsequently abandoned.
The nearby village of Swainby gradually took over.
I've flown over this before with the Vision Plus - this is better all round but rather poor flat light as a big storm was approaching rapidly.
It's a perfect place to fly provided you don't go at a busy time.
The site is somewhat elevated and no houses close by.
However it can be unexpectedly windy, as it was here intermittently.

Ravensworth Castle October 2005
Ravensworth Castle in Gateshead was home to a girls' boarding school in the 1920s. My aunt Margaret was a day pupil there and in October 2005, at the age of 92, we took here back there to see what memories it brought back.
