Edmonton Oilers Whyte Ave Riot May.12th 2006
EDMONTON - Two men went to hospital with stab wounds late Friday night as revelry following an Edmonton Oilers playoff victory turned violent.
The men, one of whom was in his 20s, were stabbed around 11:30 p.m. at a bar near 105th Street and 82nd Avenue.
The victims were taken to University of Alberta Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The size of the crowd prevented ambulances from getting to the bar.
We just had a double-stabbing at one of the lounges down there and couldn't get ambulances in, said Edmonton Police Service Insp. Dan Jones.
Jones said police officers had to transport the stabbing victims in police cars to the nearby Old Strathcona police station where ambulances were waiting.
Jones said bottles were thrown and firecrackers were going off. Police suited up in riot gear as officers attempted to herd partiers into the intersection of 105th Street and 82nd Avenue.
The festivities started more peacefully earlier in the evening.
A woman on Whyte Avenue stood on top of a telephone booth and hoisted an inflatable Stanley Cup -- to a thunderous roar.
Thousands of festive fans clogged the south-side strip, taking over the intersection of 105th Street and 82nd Avenue just after 11 p.m. The noise from raucous fans and honking horns reached nearly 100 decibels.
There were no official estimates available, but the size of the crowd appeared three times as big as the one drawn to Whyte Avenue after the Oilers ousted Detroit from the playoffs almost two weeks ago.
Bars quickly filled, but growing lines didn't move. Fans were left to celebrate on the streets, drinking and dancing. The smell of alcohol wafted through the air along with jeers aimed at San Jose Sharks' forward Jonathan Cheechoo.
Everybody's been happy and really good, said Edmonton police spokesman Jeff Wuite at 9:30 p.m., shortly after Edmonton beat San Jose 6-3. Our primary concern is that people protect themselves and businesses.
He was unavailable for further comment at press time.
A larger crowd drew a greater police presence than previous games. Dozens of officers lined Whyte Avenue, about five metres apart, at the heart of the strip.
But officers took part in the controlled chaos, hugging and posing for photos.
It's awesome. I thought it would be negative, like rioting, but everyone's happy, a smile on their face, and high-fiving, said Nicole Krawec, 29.
Earlier in the night, one fan climbed the Maj.-General William Griesbach statue near the Coliseum LRT station outside Rexall Place to put a jersey on the statue. A second fan climbed up to help him, but he fell down the approximately three metres. He was attended to by paramedics, but appeared to be fine.
It's madness, it's just madness, said Steve Parent, 19, on Whyte Avenue. This is how real Edmontonians party.
