My Walk along Te-lah-nay's Wall
The Indian Removal Act was signed into law in 1830 by President Andrew Jackson, and thus began the forced migration of most Native Americans from the southeastern United States to Oklahoma. Among the thousands who were made to leave their land and homes was a teen-aged girl named…Te-lah-nay.
She went, but after only one winter in Oklahoma, Te-lah-nay slipped away and began the long walk back to the Tennessee River Valley that she loved. It took her five years to complete the journey, and it drained the life out of her; she died while still a young woman.
About a century and a half later, Te-lah-nay’s great, great, grandson started building a memorial to her, and to the thousands of other Native Americans who were forced to walk what the Cherokees call “The Trail of Tears.” Over the next 30 plus years, Tom Hendrix moved eight and a half million pounds of stones and built the largest dry-stacked wall in North America. It is over a mile long, varies from about four feet to six feet high, and in some places is more than 10 feet thick. Hendrix hauled every stone in one of the three pick-up trucks he wore out during the process, and he lovingly placed every stone in the wall by hand.
Tom Hendrix died in 2017, but he left behind a legacy that few will match: Te-lah-nay’s wall. It’s in north Alabama near Florence, and of course the best way to experience it is in person. But for those of you who haven’t yet been there, or perhaps have been there, and would like to be reminded of what a special place it is, I have put together the following video. It’s a poor representation of the real thing, but I hope you enjoy my walk along Te-lah-nay’s wall.

River That Sings - A Tribute to Te-La-Nay by Bryan Cumming
The documentary Muscle Shoals contains a brief segment featuring a stone wall built by Tom Hendrix, honoring his great-great-grandmother, a Yuchi Indian woman named Te-la-nay.
In her native Alabama, she could hear the river sing. Along with her tribe, she was forced to move to Oklahoma, but there she heard no water that sang, so she returned home, which made her the only documented case of a Native American who came back from the Trail of Tears.
Her story inspired this song.
My wife, Holly, and I visited Tom Hendrix at the wall on our 20th anniversary, October 23, 2013.
The Muscle Shoals Sound, the Singing River, and the Natchez Trace Parkway
Enticed by the Muscle Shoals documentary, I visit the town even before watching the movie. Being a vintage recording gear junkie, visiting one of the recording studios was a must for me. I also explored this unlikely corner of Alabama, and took a ride on the Natchez Trace Parkway.
