(Wieskirche) Pilgrimage Church of Wies - Bavaria (Germany)
An absolutely breathtaking church we visited while in Bavaria. Called The Pilgrimage Church of Wies, also Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour (German: Wieskirche) it is an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s by Dominikus Zimmermann, who for the last eleven years of his life lived nearby.

Located in the foothills of the Alps, in the municipality of Steingaden in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany.
It is said that, in 1738, tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour. This supposed miracle resulted in a pilgrimage rush to see the sculpture. In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue but it was soon realized that the building would be too small for the number of pilgrims it attracted, and so Steingaden Abbey decided to commission a separate shrine. Many who have prayed in front of the statue of Jesus on the altar have claimed that people have been miraculously cured of their diseases, which has made this church even more of a pilgrimage site.
Construction took place between 1745 and 1754, and the interior was decorated with frescoes and with stuccowork in the tradition of the Wessobrunner School. Everything was done throughout the church to make the supernatural visible. Sculpture and murals combined to unleash the divine in visible form.
There is a popular belief that the Bavarian government planned to sell or demolish the rococo masterpiece during the secularization of Bavaria at the beginning of the 19th century, and that only protests from the local farmers saved it from destruction. Available sources, however, document that the responsible state commission clearly advocated the continuation of Wies as a pilgrimage site, even in spite of economic objections from the abbot of Steingaden
The Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and underwent extensive restoration between 1985 and 1991.

Pilgrimage Church of Wies - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Pilgrimage Church of Wies is a UNESCO World Heritage site unlike any other. It was built in the early 18th century to house a miraculous wooden statue of Jesus that appeared to be weeping, and has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. Even today, in this remote and quiet corner of Bavaria, over a million people each year make the pilgrimage. The interior of the church is absolutely incredible, fantastically-detailed Baroque stylings covering almost every inch of the walls and ceiling. Fascinating!

Die Wieskirche ist eine bemerkenswert prächtig ausgestattete Wallfahrtskirche in Wies (Gemeinde Steingaden) im sogenannten Pfaffenwinkel (Bayern). Der vollständige Name der Wieskirche lautet Wallfahrtskirche zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies. Die Kirche ist im Bistum Augsburg gelegen. Patron der Kirche ist der hl. Josef.
Wegen Hochzeit und Kindstaufe hatte ich leider nur sehr kurz Zeit zum Filmen.

Steingaden Wieskirche Plenum
Im Turm der zwischen 1745 und 1754 von Dominikus Zimmermann erbauten Wallfahrtskirche zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies bei Steingaden hängen sieben Glocken.
Die vier größeren Glocken sind in einem gemeinsamen Glockenstuhl paarweise übereinander angeordnet.Der Glockenstuhl besteht aus starken Eichenholzbalken und ist in der Glockenstube freistehend aufgestellt.Gemäß der eingeschnitzten Jahreszahl stammt der Glockenstuhl aus dem Jahr 1752.Die drei kleineren Glocken sind auf der Ostseite des Glockenstuhls angebaut.
Während der Bauzeit der Wieskirche wurden vier Glocken gegossen und in den Turm eingebaut: S. Anna – Gegeißelter Heiland – Jesus Christus – Schmerzhafte Mutter Gottes. Sie wurden von Abraham Brandtmair und Franziskus Kern aus Augsburg in den Jahren 1750/51/53 gegossen.
1964/65 ergänzte die Glockengießerei Hofweber aus Regensburg den Bestand um drei Glocken.
Im Jahre 1805 musste die große Glocke abgegeben werden, aber der damalige Mesner Anton Straubinger hat mit Unterstützung der Bauern diese Glocke vom Glockengießer Nikolaus Regnault für 595hl zurückgekauft. Im Jahre 1918 musste die kleinste Glocke abgeliefert werden, kam aber unversehrt nach dem Krieg zurück. Im Jahre 1942 wurden alle Glocken Bayerns erfasst und nach Alter und ihrem künstlerischen Wert beurteilt. Dabei wurden die Glocken der Wies in die Gruppe der historisch höchstwertigen Glocken eingestuft und mussten nicht abgeliefert werden.
