The Wignacourt Museum is housed in a baroque palace just outside the old Roman city of Melite incorporating Mdina and parts of Rabat, where St.Paul's Grotto is located, together with the crypt and the Parish church both dedicated to St.Paul. This site presents a wealth of historical material and as the curator of this museum , Mgr. John Azzopardi says, in the front cover of his booklet on the museum, one finds a Picture Gallery, Archaeology, Sculpture, Coins, Furniture, Embroided Vestments, Old Maps, Rare Books, Drawings and Prints, Baroque Chapel, Underground War Shelter with Catacombs all under one roof.
The Wigancourt Museum
The Wignacourt Museum is a historical gem situated adjacent to Rabat's Parish Church of St Paul. The original building was commissioned as a baroque residence of the Chaplains of the Knights of Malta by Grand Master Aloph de Wignacourt in the early 17th century, completed on three levels in 1749, opened as a museum in 1981 and extensively refurbished and reopened bringing it back to its former glory in 2012.
The site on which the Wignacourt Museum is situated has a very special religious connotation as the underlying St Paul's Grotto is said to be the spot where St Paul the Apostle founded the first Christian Community on the island in A.D. 60. Apart from this holy grotto, there is an underground maze of Roman-era catacombs and hypogea and, further below, a vast and fascinating complex of World War II shelters consisting of two main corridors and fifty rooms that were excavated and used by Maltese families throughout the ordeal.

The Wignacourt Museum 2018 - Quality Assured Malta
The Wignacourt Museum is once again open after an extensive restoration project. The complex includes St Paul’s Grotto – considered to be the cradle of Christianity in Malta. On site one can admire rooms hewn from rock which provided shelter to a number of families during the Second World War. These lead to the intricate labyrinth of catacombs which date back to Roman times.
Upstairs is the Church of St Publius and the beautiful Baroque building inaugurated by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt for the chaplains of the Knights of St John who were entrusted with looking after the Grotto. It now houses a magnificent collection of paintings, silver, vestments and other unique artefacts.

The grotto is the place where according to tradition St Paul lived and preached during his three months stay in Malta in 60 A.D.
The fascinating St. Paul's Grotto is set beneath the beautiful St. Paul's Church in Rabat. According to the Book of Acts it was here that St. Paul and his missionary party took refugee after their ship wrecked on the island of Malta on their way from Crete to Rome. It was also after their arrival to St. Paul's Grotto in Malta that they began preaching about Christianity to the Maltese people.
St. Paul spent 3 months in the grotto in Rabat that is now so famous that Pope Benedict visited St. Paul's Grotto to pray during his visit to Malta in 2010 and so did Pope John Paul II in 1990.
During his stay, The Act of Aposteles tells us how St. Paul healed several people during his stay among whom was St. Publius who was the father of the governor at that time. St. Paul's Grotto in Rabat became one of the earliest places of Christian worship on the island and St. Paul's gift of healing and him remaining unharmed after a snakebite made the locals regard him as a God.
The Church of St. Paul was built on top of the grotto in the 17th century and holds a statue of St. Paul. From the Grotto you can also take a set of stairs leading under the road to the Second World War air raid shelters and Wignacourt Museum.

Wignacourt sığınakları insanların 2. dünya savaşı sırasında bmbalamalardan kurtulmak için yapmış oldukları birçok sığınaktan ve mezarlardan oluşmaktadır. Bu yer Malta adasının Rabat şehrinde bulunmaktadır. Giriş ücreti sanırım 2 euro idi görmenizi tavsiye ederim.

Everything is very impressing. Malta is very rich in attractions.
