We had almost concluded our first canter safari since we arrived at Ranthambore. Our canter was cruising along the tar road in the buffer zone of Ranthambore National Park as we were now headed back to our hotel. This tar road runs throughout the buffer zone of Ranthambore National Park, from the park entrance to all the way up to the Ranthambore fort.
This is the approach road for Zones 1 to 5 of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR), the Ranthambore fort and the Ganesh Mandir atop the fort. There are several small water bodies and streams that appear on either sides of this tar road, along the edges of the forest.
On one such dry stream bed we caught a glimpse of a Bengal Monitor Lizard also called the Common Indian Monitor Lizard. It was most likely searching for food. Their diet consists of insects, lizards, fish, smaller mammals and rodents. Indian Monitor lizards can grow to more than 5 feet in length. They are found across India, Sri Lanka and various parts of Southeast Asia. They can be found more often on land and are mostly solitary.
Indian Monitor Lizards are good climbers. In Rajasthan they are called Goyra. They are called Ghorpad in Marathi and it is said that monitor lizards were used to scale the walls of forts.
Although they look menacing, Indian Monitor Lizards are harmless animals and shy of humans.
The Bengal Monitor Lizard is a threatened species. They are hunted especially for their meat and skin (which is used to produce leather).

Tigers can see perfectly in the dark, and according to scientists, they can distinguish colors. Bengal and Amur tigers are the largest in their kind. The sizes of these tigers can reach 2,5-2,9 meters in length (without the tail), and the weight of tigers of this species reaches 275-320 kg. The height of the tiger at the withers is 1.15 m. The average weight of the adult tiger is 180-250 kg.

One woman was killed and another injured after a pair of tigers pounced on them at Beijing's Badaling Wildlife Park on Saturday afternoon.
The tigers attacked one of the women when she left her vehicle and walked a few meters away from the car. The surveillance video footage shows the woman being dragged by the tiger, which prompted the second woman, who later turned out to be her mother, to rush for help.However, she didn't survive the attack.
While the park allows visitors to drive their own cars in a safari-style tour, they are prohibited to get out as the animals roam freely through the park. But the first woman got out of the car after an alleged argument, putting her life at risk, according to several media reports.
The park has been closed for the time being. But the weekend attack wasn’t the first. In August 2014, a security guard was killed in a tiger attack at the same park.
