Ruff Cut Namibia Part 3 Video Details
This adventure takes place in Northwest Namibia and starts out from the old German town of Swakopmund.
In this episode Ben and I are going to continue to show you how to explore Namibia independently.
On day 5, Ben & I head north along the Skeleton Coast. It's called the Skeleton Coast for a reason. Not particularly because of people skeletons. It's because the coast was historically treacherous to ships and any stranded crew.
After checking out the wreck we turned inland towards the Brandberge Range. There are no roads out here technically, but there are well-defined 4WD tracks.
Late in the day we found a sheltered spot to setup camp for the night.
The morning of day 6 found me comfortably grooming in front of my luxurious tent. We were camped in the middle of nowhere. But that didn't stop Ben from making a wholesome breakfast.
Time to break camp. Ouch. Did I mention break my video camera?
Today's objective is to go to the Ugab River and try to find a way through the riverbed, but then cutting short to north if there is any track, without going back on the main road.
Once back on the flat main track, Ben lowers the tire pressure for off-road. This is a regular ritual as we change surfaces many times each day.
Ben can't resist stopping to check out the first Welwitschia plant we cross. Welwitschia only found here and nowhere else in the rest of the world. Very, very unusual. Took hundreds of years to grow this size.
There's the creator. And here are the signposts explaining the rules. Oh wait. I guess there are no rules. This is Namibia.
The Messum Crater was formed by the collapse of a volcano, around 135 million years ago and has a diameter of 18km and is comprised of two concentric circles of hills.
Trying to figure out that dam software again. Tracks for Africa!
A few hours later we reached a wet river. Well it looks like we've reached an impasse. We can't go any further. We will need to head the other way. We soon find the riverbed dry and drivable again. I guess we're going to Brandberg Mine? The riverbed is the actual marked road here.
In a desert environment the tire tracks of previous drivers remain visible until the next rain season that floods the river. About one or two years on average.
The Rhino Camp is a ranger station. One of its primary concerns is the diminishing population of desert rhinos here.
Back in 2013 Ben & I came across a wildlife-viewing hide in the desert. Inside we found a logbook. “Last person was here February 20 and saw a rhino. Sighted north of Springbok River.”
A rhino footprint. See the toes? 1, 2, 3, 4.
Two unlucky rhinos. All the wildlife that will remain in the future perhaps?
The Goantagab River. Find a camp there.”
From the Messum Crater this morning we did a lot of dusty and remote driving to reach this even more remote camp on the Goantagab.
We start the day from a free camp off the Ugab River, on the Goantagab tributary.
Ben's building a road again. The last time we visited this area we managed to travel up the Goantagab River. But this year we couldn't find a way. So Ben doubled back to the Ugab River and will use a ridge trail that parallels the Goantagab. Or at least that is the plan per the Maps for Africa software. But first we need to make it up to the ridge line.
Once up on the ridge the track looks pretty good. These tracks are used by wildlife rangers and poachers, so are in pretty good shape. Breaking down out here is not an option.
We've dropped down from the ridge and re-joined the Goantagab.
Around 12:30. Lunchtime. In the riverbed again.
Out of the river and taking a shortcut towards the Huab River. But first Ben wants to practice lawn bowling.
A 230 km desert marathon. Crazy people.
We've made it to the Huab River. But rivers with water in them are difficult. But not just because trails become lost. More importantly, wet rivers have large grass eating barriers. We need to get to the other side.
We give up on that crossing and move downstream following old tracks. The track leads to a deep muddy waterhole. The last ones to cross this, did so during a dry spell I think. But Ben is determined to build a route across.
Looking good. Just one dent. One river crossing accomplished. Time to setup camp.

4X4 Skeleton Coast, Namibia Episode 176
On our last days in the bush we exit the Goantagab River and follow two elephants down the Ugab and then make our way to the Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross to see the shark bait. Then we relax as Ben flies a kite while I wonder what the locals see in fog (or beach) fishing. The remaining days are spent being tourists in Swakopmund and Windhoek. Bye bye Namibia.

This adventure continues our 4 Wheel drive in northwest Namibia.
We made it from the Spitzkoppe beautiful camp between the high mountain. Off road into the Omaruru river there out of the Omaruru river which proved to be quite a drive and it was wet as well. And then into Uis, a beautiful little dusty town
towards the Brandberge down into the Ugab river all the way through the Ugab river on a little detour (a little swampy) and and out to our camp.
Now we have the choice either going down to the coast, going to Swakomp, going to Messum Crator or even making it back to Windhoek, but that would be quite a rush.
We opted for Swakop because it gave us another day of off-road or beach driving.
Two of our friends from yesterday evening perhaps. We paced these guys for a while since we knew that they would probably be the last elephants we would cross
on this Namibia off road adventure. They didn't seem to mind our presence as long as we kept our distance.
And naturally we had to stop at the main attraction along this baron stretch of coast. Cape Cross.
Beach fishing, a hobby I don't understand.
We spent that night and the next day relaxing in Swakopmund and then on our 24th day returned to Windhoek by boring highway.
Ben then left Namibia and I hung around for another week to catch up on the local sights and history.
This was a 23 days of off-road 4WD adventure in remote places with wildlife in the harshest of environments, surreal landscapes and the most memorable people.
It was a real world adventure indeed.
Bye bye Namibia.

Inhabitants of the Namib. The Oldest Desert in the World - Full Documentary
▶FULL DOCUMENTARIES |
▶ Spanish video:
The Namib is located in the western region of Namibia and is the oldest desert in the world, a dry region where fourteen years may go by without a single drop of rain falling. An unforgiving landscape, where nature demonstrate the extent to which animals and plants are able to adapt, and conquer one of the most extreme ecosystems on the planet, .
The dunes represent the greatest challenge to life in the desert. The sands don’t retain water, and there is only a bare minimum of nutrients available for plant life. Moreover, the winds constantly blow, moving the dunes in a ceaseless migration across the lonely desert.
Life would seem to be impossible here. The constant movement of the dunes prevents vegetation from taking hold along the unstable slopes. But, even here, plants have found a place in which they can gain a foothold.
The sparse vegetation, and the lack of water, mean that this region is totally inaccessible for most animals, and any that do stray too far into the desert are almost certain to die.
Despite appearances, death is not the only visitor to this area of the Namib. These bodies are evidence that this is one of the many beaches along the coast of West Africa to which the fur seals come every year to give birth.
Seven days after giving birth, the females are again ready to mate. Once they have copulated, they swim into the deep waters, where they remain for several days, feeding. During this time, the pups are left alone in the seal colony.
Approximately 40,000 years ago, a new species appeared in the Namib: man.
The herbivores of the savannah had conquered the desert, and so the first humans in the area were able to live from hunting. Today, the descendents of those tribes, the bushmen, remain loyal to the same lifestyle which enabled their forefathers to colonise these lands.
The diet of the bushmen includes 55 species of animals and 100 different plants. Hunting is the men’s job, and gathering is for the women.
In the north region of the desert live the Himba. This tribe likes to take care of their appearance. They women wear a great deal of jewellery, and paint their skin with fat, mixed with reddish dust.
Their culture, like that of the bushmen, is changing under outside influence. The new generations will have to make a choice – follow the new trends, or maintain their traditional way of life, the same way of life which made it possible for them to conquer the inhospitable lands of the Namib.
The Himba are the last link in the chain of conquest of these lands. An epic story which began millions of years ago, and which has brought life to the very heart of the Namib desert.

Hobatere leeuwen 03 november 2019
