Hiking Wildcat Canyon
Wildcat Canyon is in the East Bay Hills just east of Richmond, San Pablo, Albany, El Cerrito and Berkeley, California. It is a part of the East Bay Regional Park district and is inundated with many trails running throughout the park. Wildcat Canyon is one of the hidden jewels in the East San Francisco Bay Area.

Wildcat Canyon - Havey Canyon and Conlon Trail

If you ride at Wildcat Canyon in Richmond you know its definitely a beginner mountain biker area. Since it is local to me I ride it a couple times a week and found that Havey Canyon and Conlon trail are probably the funnest down hill sections. You do have to climb to get to them and depending on which way you go some of the climbs can get ridiculous.

Alvarado Park an outdoor oasis with a unique history
By Zach Chouteau
Everyone has their own favorite alfresco escape in Richmond, and for this ‘Rich Life’ reporter it’s definitely Alvarado Park.
With the main entrance on McBryde Avenue near the Richmond-El Sobrante border, this subsection of Wildcat Canyon is an unbeatable blend of outdoor beauty and gorgeous stone masonry that includes an ancient bridge and picturesque lamp towers.
Cut in half by the Wildcat Creek, now flowing robustly again after our lengthy drought, Alvarado is home to several rentable picnic areas as well as a spacious playground right in the middle of things. Some large lawn areas are ideal for fun and games, but miles of hiking trails make the setting a cool place to explore as well.
Another bonus when things heat up is the wealth of shady areas along the creek. The picturesque park even has a fascinating history and was one time served by its own streetcar line decades ago.
Alvarado is also the previous site of a popular open-air pavilion and roller skating rink, and was also home for decades to Grande Vista Sanitarium—aka Belgum Sanitarium—a retreat for patients seeking mental health services and help for drug addiction.
And today it remains a remarkable retreat for any Richmonder seeking scenery, serenity or just an invigorating hike amid pristine nature. (Photos, video and story by Zach Chouteau)
