Men’s Golf Closes Out Their Regular Season at Jim West Intercollegiate Monday
BASTROP – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men’s golf team is set to close out its regular season when they tee it up a the Jim West Intercollegiate at Wolfdancer Golf Club.
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes being played on Tuesday. Both days will get started with an 8:30 shotgun start.
The Wolfdancer Golf Club plays 7,205 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
Along with UTRGV, other schools competing at the Jim West Intercollegiate include: Incarnate Word, Louisiana, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, St. Edward’s, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State (Host) and UT Arlington.
Last Time Out
UTRGV finished tied for sixth at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate after posting a three-round score of 888 with rounds of 294, 293 and 301.
Pedro Lamadrid finished tied for seventh with a three-round score of 217 while Casto Gomez-Ruiz finished tied for 21st with a three-round score of 222.
Ali Khazanbeik finished in 30th with a three-round score of 224 while Luca Portelli and Michael Rizzo finished tied for 45th with three-round scores of 229.
Last Year at the Jim West Intercollegiate
UTRGV finished in 13th place in last year’s event with a three-round score of 914.
Peter Fox led the way last year with a three-round score of 226 to finish tied for 45th. Pedro Lamadrid finished tied for 50th with a three-round score of 227. Ramon Ventura-Camp finished in 56th with a three-round score of 230 while Ali Khazanbeik and Casto Gomez-Ruiz finished tied for 69th with a three-round score of 237.
St. Mary’s won last year’s event with a three-round score of 848 while Mitchell Meissner won the individual championship with a three-round score of 207.
International Flavor
The Vaqueros have nine student-athletes representing six different countries including the Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and the United State.

It was the attack of a bobcat! Steve Verschoor says he was on his way to buy a newspaper when he saw a bobcat attacking a man's German shepherd so ran over to help. Shocking video shows Verschoor frantically trying to fling off the wild animal, which clamped down on his hand. Verschoor suffered a fractured thumb, deep cuts on one hand and scratches on the other arm. It turned out the bobcat had rabies.

The University of Arizona (also referred to as Arizona, U of A, or UA) is a public research university in Tucson, Arizona. Founded in 1885, the UA was the first university in the Arizona Territory. UTPA Women's Tennis Concludes Fall Season at SHSU Bearkat Invitational
November 2, 2012 -- HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team finishes up the fall season on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at the SHSU Bearkat Invitational at McAdams Tennis Center.
Action will consist of four singles flights and two doubles flights. Each flight contains a main draw and a back draw.
Saturday's action will start with singles, move to doubles, and then, after a lunch break, return to singles.
On Sunday the competitors will conclude singles and then finish up doubles.
In all singles rounds except the finals, they will play two sets. If necessary, a 10-point super tiebreaker will be played. The finals will be best of three sets.
The Field
This year's field includes the Broncs, host Sam Houston State, Oral Roberts, North Central Texas College and Seminole College.

Last Time Out
Freshmen Reegan Greenwood, Anastasia Burobina and Lucie Chrastecka all picked up singles wins to lead the Broncs at Texas State Play Day last Saturday.
Making her Broncs debut, Greenwood played two strong matches. In her first match, Greenwood defeated Samantha Siegel of St. Edward's 6-3, 7-6. In her second match, Greenwood dropped the first set to UTSA's Irene Gandara 0-6, but bounced back to take the second set 7-6. Gandara took the super tiebreaker 10-7.
After dropping her first match to Alexandra Khadhzyan of St. Edward's 3-6, 0-6, Burobina had a strong second round, defeating Prairie View A&M's Lerato Ndlovu 6-3, 7-5.
Chrastecka played a paid of tight matches. In the first round, she forced an extra game in the first set and a tiebreaker in the second set before falling to Prairie View A&M's Brittany Harrell 5-7, 6-7. In the second round, Chrastecka dropped the first set to Prairie View A&M's Christine Gwodog 3-6, but came back to win the second set 6-4 and the super tiebreaker 10-3.
When in Roma...
The Broncs have one local student-athlete in Roma-native and freshman Julia Perez. During her four years at Roma High School, Perez went 72-0 and never lost a district match. She was District 32-4A MVP, First Team All-Valley and First Team All-District in Doubles all four years. She was also the 2009 and 2011 singles district champion, as well as the 2012 doubles district champion. The Gladiators won the district title every year she was there and were ranked No. 12 in the state in 2011. Perez also led the Gladiators on a 52-match winning streak in district play.
In addition to her stellar tennis play, Perez was a regional qualifier in swimming all four years, led the golf team to their first ever regional tournament, led the basketball team to the 2012 playoffs, and earned honorable mention in golf in 2011 and 2012 in basketball in 2011.

The Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries, including Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, The Netherlands, Russia and the United States.
