Immature White-crowned Sparrow Stops At Cornell Feeders – Dec. 11, 2018
An immature White-crowned Sparrow decked out in its first winter plumage made a pit stop in front of the Cornell Lab FeederWatch cam. In eastern North America, these large sparrows typically have orange to pinkish bills. Look for rusty brown stripes on gray heads of immature birds.
Watch LIVE at for news, updates, and more information about the pond and its surroundings.
This FeederWatch cam is located in the Treman Bird Feeding Garden at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Perched on the edge of both Sapsucker Woods and its 10-acre pond, these feeders attract both forest species like chickadees and woodpeckers as well as some species that prefer open environments near water like Red-winged Blackbirds.
The Wild Birds Unlimited store at Sapsucker Woods has been a part of the visitor experience in the Cornell Lab’s Visitor Center ever since the new building opened in 2003. They are the preferred vendor of official Cornell Lab merchandise and offer a dizzying number of feeders, binoculars, and birdwatching-related gear and gifts to make any bird enthusiast happy. WBU has also pledged support for many of the Cornell Lab’s local efforts, including providing the bird feeders and food for this FeederWatch Cam.

Birdwatching in Southern Interior British of Columbia, Canada April 11, 2018 YouTu
A beautiful, peaceful few hours birdwatching in the Southern Interior of British Columbia on April 11, 2018.
SOLD! Retreat Island, British Columbia
Welcome to Retreat Island where nature is at its finest. Located just off the West side of Galiano Island is where you will find this 7 acre paradise. Arrive at the private dock on the Retreat Cove side of the island. The float can accommodate year round sheltered moorage of a boat of up to 50 ft on one side and additional moorage on the other side.
Explore to discover whales, eagles, an Arbutus meadow, spring wild flowers and a small white shell beach. The Island was subdivided into two lots. A conservation covenant was placed on one half of the island and that parcel was donated to the Galiano Conservancy Association. Other than invited guests, there are no other visitors to the island as there is no public access.
The island is serviced by a submarine cable providing a reliable 200 amp connection to the grid. Power lines on the island connect to the cable and feed into the buildings. There is a high-speed internet connection.
There is a rainwater collection system that services three storage tanks with a total capacity or about 6000 gallons.
The home was built around the existing old growth fir trees and was architecturally designed to take advantage of the islands distinctive features with a minimum of disturbance. Post and beam internal framing and extensive decks create a feeling of living within the landscape, rather than imposing on it.
The layout and the abundance of windows maximize the gorgeous ocean view. Vaulted ceilings and skylights make the home beautifully bright. The kitchen and living room look out over Trincomali Channel south toward Saltspring Island. Enjoy meals on the covered deck off the kitchen. The family room, which could also be a bedroom, has a cozy window seat and access to a large deck.
The master bedroom with 2 piece ensuite is upstairs surrounded by many windows.
In behind the main house sit a 2 bedroom fully self-contained guesthouse and a studio, which continue with the same architect’s theme of post and beam construction and living amongst nature. Both buildings have amazing views and a deck connects the two.
A lower deck has a recessed 6 person Softub that heats water using heat from the pump motor, so no additional heater is necessary.
What a way fabulous way to enjoy a pleasant RETREAT.

Song Sparrow Singing - Olentangy River Trail, Columbus, Ohio, USA
The Song Sparrow ( Melospiza melodia ) is a medium sized American Sparrow. Among the native Sparrows in North America, it is easily one of the most abundant and adaptable species. Adult Song Sparrows has brown under-parts with dark streaks on the back and are white underneath with dark streaking and dark brown spot s in middle of breast. They have a brown cap and a long brown tail. Although they are habitat generalist; their habitat is brushy areas and marshes. They also thrive in human areas, agricultural areas and along the roadsides. Northern birds migrate to Southern United states or Mexico during winter. The lone bird calling along the Olentangy River trail , Columbus was spotted in one of my walks.
