Wildlife & Wilderness Conservation - The most important purpose in the world - Why Care
Why should we care? Why does conservation matter to me? The answer is simple, it is everyone's world, everyone's home. If we don't want to lose it, then we must engage and fight for it.
Shane Mahoney is a renowned conservationist, scientist and wildlife biologist and has made it his goal to build relationships which will promote conservation and stewardship ideas in our modern world. The message is clear, it is not too late yet, to save what we have, but we must act now, so please share the word!

Rights and Resources: Indigenous Communities and Environmental Conservation #SkollWF 2017
Indigenous people are often considered the world’s best stewards of land. But lack of clear legal rights to property and land use has led to environmental exploitation including deforestation, extractive industrial waste, and pollution. This session will explore tensions between indigenous peoples’ land rights and development–or protection–of the land by government, corporations, and conservation organizations. It will also highlight successful collaborations between these actors and indigenous people.

Choke Points: Global Water, Food and Energy Crises
GRCC, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan, presents Keith Schneider, Circle of Blue and Liz Kirkwood, FLOW (For Love of Water)
Water outlines Michigan’s geography and culture. And, with climate change and national water scarcity, it could define a much greater share of our economy. Mr. Schneider reports on the mega trends influencing global water supply and use. Demand for energy and food in an era of diminishing fresh water reserves has weakened national economies, destabilized governments, touched off civic rebellions, and put pressure on the world’s biggest financial institutions.
Executive Director of FLOW (a water law and policy center), and an environmental lawyer, Ms. Kirkwood highlights water, energy, and environmental governance issues. She was the leading force in shaping the “Oil & Water Don’t Mix” campaign to address the Line 5 pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.
Both hailing from Traverse City, our panelists illustrate the challenges posed by significant water risks here in Michigan and beyond.

The River War: An Account of the Reconquest of the Sudan by Winston S. Churchill
When the self-proclaimed Mahdi (“Guided One”) gathered Islamic forces and kicked the Anglo-Egyptians out of the Sudan, he unleashed a backlash. With the image of the heroic General Charles Gordon dying at Khartoum, the British public was ready to support a war to reclaim the lost territories. And when the political time was right, a British-Egyptian-Sudanese expedition led by the redoubtable Herbert Kitchener set out to do just that.
The river involved was the Nile. For millennia, its annual flood has made habitable a slender strip, though hundreds of miles of deserts, between its tributaries and its delta. Through this desolate region, man and beast struggled to supply the bare essentials of life. Though this same region, the expedition had to find and defeat an enemy several times larger than itself.
The young Churchill was hot to gain war experience to aid his career, and so he wangled a transfer to the 21st Lancers and participated in the last successful cavalry charge the world ever saw, in the climactic battle of Omdurman. He also had a position as war correspondent for the Morning Post, and on his return to England he used his notes to compose this book.
