Baboon Wars: Cape Town's raiding baboons face new obstacle
In South Africa, residents in the Cape are at war with the local baboon population. For years they've been raiding homes and destroying property. This has led to the animals being killed in large numbers. The situation has left local conservationists worried. Wildlife officials have come up with a new plan, which they hope will lead to a peaceful solution. Philip Owira reports.

Urban Critters- Baboons
The ‘problem’ baboons of Cape Town have made quite a name for themselves over the past few years, due to their hostile take overs of back-packs, cooler bags, and indeed motor cars in order to relieve hikers and sight-seers of their chocolate bars and trail snacks. But is seems that the town of Knysna is now experiencing similar issues, as gangs of these large primates have begun to wreak havoc on the restful settlement. As with their Capetonian cousins, these baboons are reacting to a man-made change in their environment, and 50/50 heads off to the oyster capitol of South Africa to find out why these usually human fearing animals are ‘coming out their shells’ and enthusiastically ransacking the houses of Knysna’s townsfolk.
Baboons Near Cape Point in Cape Town
As we were leaving Cape Point in our tour bus, we noticed a whole troop of baboons just off the side of the road!
Baboons - 5 min
The residents of the Cape Peninsula are continually plagued by the craftiest of thieves and vandals: baboons. They can be aggressive, raid rubbish, break windows and climb into cars... all for a quick snack. Cape Town's response to the problem varies depending on who you ask. Cape Nature has had death warrants issued for two of the dominant males that are biggest troublemakers; while another company takes a slightly less aggressive stance using baboon monitors that shoot at the baboons with paint balls to keep them out of residential areas and out of trouble. Residents appreciate the wildlife surrounding them, but the damage a baboon can wreak upon an unattended kitchen can be devastating. These highly flexible and intelligent creatures learn quickly and when they know they can steal a quick chocolate bar, why should they have to search for leaves and berries? What measures are being taken to protect both human and baboon? How can both co-exist? This is not a new topic to the 50|50 screens but is one that still requires answers.
